Proposed Law Would Make Amish Clean Up Horse Poop

Horse diapers ? Didn't know there was such a thing, but that may be one solution sought in Gouverneur as village officials ponder fining the Amish for equine droppings on village streets.
Local Amish bring their buggies into the village and into many communities including Watertown. While nettlesome, some feel going after the Amish is not worth the hassle. Under the proposal, the village with a giant LifeSavers replica in its downtown would charge up to $250 per offense.

Its a wonder a slip n fall lawyer hasn't seen the light on this. If you were to fall in a pile of..well, you know, and it was worth $100,000 or more, why that's real money. Joe should have known.

What to do. Dog owners have to "pick up" after their pooches, don't they? More importantly is the lack of reflective signage or lights on the black buggies. I do not believe the Amish religion forbids it. I do not want to crash into a black buggy on a rainy night because they are stubborn! They are a vehicle on (and their) roads and must be safe!

Have the people of Governuer gone completely bonkers?

...not wanting to be judgemental, but the Life Saver village seems to have bigger problems to solve than a few "road apples". Sit down and list your priorities and see what comes out on top.

That new mayor is rolling up his sleeves and solving Govt-manure's problems in spite of his felonious past.

Maybe that is why they need more po-po? To keep the Amish in line and curb the drive-by Amish shootings?

There are bags that can be put on horses to catch the crap. Hey localities have pooper scooper laws for dogs, those horses leave a lot bigger mess.

Perhaps we ought to put horse diapers on our local elected officials here in Ogdensburg to clean up their continual messes :>))

In a way there is a horse poop diaper. It is a small poop catcher behind the horse, like the horse cabs use in NYC. In New-Orleans they drop a flag and a clean up crew comes by to pick it up. I think it's okay to have them have the catch cloths behind the horse.

only if the horse poop fines can be offset by the carbon credits the amish are amassing by not using any utilities like electric

It seems like in the old West days (I believe) that horses were just like the cars of today, they were parked in lots on the outskirts of town. You watch any of the old West movies, Cowboys hated that. I am sure that's what they had to do when towns started to have streets and churchs. Make the filty stay out on the outskirts.

From Wikipedia; Swartzentruber Amish use reflective tape on the back of their buggies, in place of bright triangular slow moving signs for road travel, which they regard as too worldly. These buggies will also sport lanterns, rather than battery-operated lights, or reflectors. The lanterns are also often staggered, one side slightly higher than the other, so as not to appear like the tail lights of a vehicle.
Wake up Amish, it's what you are supposed to do! We are out there too and it is just fair to let us see you at night!

Hypocritical auto owners clean up their exhaust pollution (impossible) and the carriage drivers clean up the sh!t.

Goose and gander... we (auto owners) are the REAL criminals.

I'm all for the Amish to be fined,I dont give a bloody care about their relgion, tis not about their faith but about safety,as far as the sign on the back of their buggies that too should be enforced, last yr on Arsenal I had the displeasure of being behind a buggy, the horse defecated whilst at the red light and my thought at the time was (Really, now I get to drive through it)and they have of late taken it upon themselves to park their horse and buggy in Handicap Zones especially @ Lowes, there is no difference between picking up after ye dog whlist on a walk and the horses, fine them I say!
