Today media was calling Council members wanting to know if Councilwoman Burns will be attending the meeting tonight as the topic is a discussion of alcohol policies on city property. First, I certainly expect all hands on deck for the discussion and all of us are adult enough to suffer irony when it happens...
If anything, I would say when the media wags and the nattering nabobs of the community are looking for you to fail...looking for you to hang your head...that's the time to hold your head up and carry on with duties as assigned. I know incoming invective was a great motivator for me this past year.
The overly unctuous are the most intolerant and mean spirited. Roxy, don't give in to them.

Hopefully she will show up to work and we can all get moving on "matters" that actually matter.
+ 1 Mayor!
The best thing she can do is show up and get it over with like she did at work. She can certainly offer valuable and unique perspective for the city.
She made a mistake.
No one was hurt.
She has an obligation to fulfill, I suspect she will.
let us make room for some dissent, shall we? I feel there is too much pandering going on here. While everyone is entitled to make mistakes,as councilwoman Burns has, there needs to be some accountability involved. It is imperative that we as a constituency, hold our elected representatives to a higher standard.unfortunately we do not here in Watertown (which has worked well to the mayor's advantage). I think if Councilwoman Burns acknowledges this issue and shines a light on it, all may be forgiven. If she only keeps her head up high and says nothing, it only validates a sense of arrogance and being above those who she represents. She has a real opportunity here to turn this issue into a bitter sweet moment.
If a person (including media) can stand up and say they've never made a mistake, they are liars. Everyone makes mistakes from time to time (whether they like to admit it or not) learn from them and move on.
Making a mistake is an awfully vague term.
What she did was broke a law and put herself and god knows who else in grave danger. She likely did it on purpose, with the idea she had a "get out of jail free card" because of who her ex husband is.
But as dangerous as her actions were, too many people can relate to what she did and so they forgive. It is noteworthy that most people relate to her actions from a different era and a younger time.
Be that as it may, she is not going to be forced to wear a scarlet AAA because most of us think the legal system should dole out the punishment instead of the snotty sanctimonious anonymous commenters.
I see it in one way. Iv'e never seen anyone get fired from their job for DWI. God knows there are plenty of exsamples every week in this area. So why (and I mean why) is she going to be held to anything? No one else ever was, and no one else ever will be. Yes I am sure there are exceptions. Like Police, School Bus Drivers, and some of the other people who drive for a living. Her not be able to drive effects the job in no way. Time to move on. It's silly at this point... By the way. The election is over.
Most of these posts represent the governed's feeling for those who govern. Ms. Burns is just an example of peoples resentment at being ruled.
Regardless of anyone’s personal feelings -- as a high profile individual and elected public official within the community, no one understands better than Ms. Burns that appalling behavior invariably leads to dire consequences -- least of which is the rude awakening of the predictable and proverbial media treatment. If there is a “public crucifixion” taking place, it’s self inflicted -- as disillusion is no ‘respecter of persons.’
Incidentally, the folks over at WATN last week didn’t have a problem discussing the issue while serving up their own special blend of ‘poor Roxie’ elixir for the usual lemmings to lap up -- so it cuts both ways.
Diversions, distractions and “mistakes” aside -- members of the city council, elected officials and government appointments are entrusted by the public to hold themselves to the highest ethical standards and to be conscientious stewards of taxpayer dollars.
Less than two weeks ago, FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt was arrested in Fairfax, Virginia for DWI. He was initially placed on administrative leave. He later resigned stating, […] “I am unwilling to let anything cast a shadow on the outstanding work done. . . by my colleagues.”
Public office should only be handed to people who understand that leadership is demonstrated by example.
Ms. Burns… Is that too much to ask?
Because if it is... It may be time to move on.
