Deer of the Day Comes to Your Neighbors Front Yard

Here's a first for a constituent complaint. A very nice northside woman called and ask if there is a city ordinance against hanging a dead deer in a front yard. Apparently the dressed out animal has been hanging there since yesterday and this neighbor thinks its in poor taste as well as an attraction for dogs and neighborhood kids.
I know the arguments, so you all can go at it in the comment section. Is it a ritual of sportmanship and the nation's frontier past....or is it 'dead animal show and tell" ?

It is both.
But if the lawmakers (not you) feel the need to flex their muscles over signs and where you park your car in front of your house on your own property then you would think they would have something to say about this.

You have to hang them if you can just for few days to clean the blood out and get rid of some of the wild taste. But I guess I can see not putting them into others faces. Still most people are proud of their kills. It's a thing that's hard wired into most us in the North-Country. Which doctor's wife called?

Might be OK to hang it while up at camp but here in town? and as warm as it is? I wouldn't but if there isn't an ordinance on the books...

With the election behind us, how do you feel about hunters and hunting?

While it might not be in "Good Taste" to hang it, In this day of high 50's for a temp, It will not Taste Good.

Look a dead body hung up in your yard(whether it be a deer, turkey or a dancing with the stars alum)is no one's business but the hanger!Lop off an appendage for the pot if you are that jealous, most hunters are quite generous and would't begrudge you...

9:55 Why do we need an ordinance to practice good sense? I hunt, but I recognize this isn't for everyone. Why be rude? This is the same problem we have with dogs at the Farmer's Market. There hasn't been and there isn't a law against it, so far. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't have sense enough to keep your dog away from all those crowds. Why do we need laws to tell us to be reasonable?

Look....In all truth....How hard would it have been for the lady in question to first try reason with the person next door? That's the problem with the world anymore. Call the police first? Go over and have a cup of coffee and talk it out first. People need to start learning how to get along with each other. Instead of worrying about the law Mayor....Call her back and suggest she try talking first. Ask if the dead animal can be moved into the back yard...Try making friends. Everyone needs more friends over an enemy.....

That question is easy Ray. Anyone inconsiderate enough to hang the thing out front in the first place would be hard to reason with. that's how hard it would be to reason with them

Ray, you've been losin' it lately. If a dude is likely to hang a dead deer in his front yard, how likely is he to listen to some lady suggesting it isn't a good idea? And she didn't call the police, she called the city about an ordinance, or maybe I got it wrong.

9:55 in answer to your question...there needs to be laws to tell people to be reasonable because what may be acceptable to one may not be to another. The "do unto others" credo seems to escape so many. As long as there are those pushing the limits there will be others trying to define just what the limits are.

I'm as much for personal freedom as the next person but my freedoms shouldn't be at the expense of someone elses.

Well I think you are wrong in the fact that she should have tryed first to get along with the dude. Yes i know she just asked the Mayor if the dude could hang his deer in the city. She didn't call the police. I used that one as an exsample. People are so quick to call the police. When they could just walk over and say....Hello....I'm the lady next door...and....

Then when the dude isn't nice...Okay call the City. Call the police if needed.

I had a few problems with new people in the hood over the years. Well a few talks back and forth solved it. I believe in being a man. Going over and saying hey I don't like you throwing that there. Iv'e had the same happen to me over the years. We never went to fighting or taking on. We talked and were done.... Went easy.

What makes you so certain that avenue wasn't already explored?

Sometimes people, even well educated, intelligent people are just not receptive to criticism no matter how offensive their actions are or how constructive or well intended the critique is.

That's probably why the neighbor put the ball in the mayor's court. If there is an ordinance it's the citys responsibility to enforce it and they avoid a potentially ugly confrontation. If there is no ordinance then it gets a pass and the neighbor grits their teeth and lives with it.

I really don't have the time or inclination to negotiate with rude jerks on my own. That is why we have zoning laws and disturbing the peace laws along with officials and cops to enforce them.

Personally I am just as offended walking though the meat section at price chopper as I am from a hanging deer. But since I am not an inconsiderate slack jawed hunter, I do understand that many people don't want to see my venison hanging in my front yard. So I don't do it.

Well maybe so.... But I would almost bet she never thought about it being their problem and not the rest of the city's. For I could car less that she has a deer hanging in a tree next to her house. Nor should you. It is between them. Grow some and take care of it is my advice to her.

If there is an ordinance it is the city's problem!

Whether or not you are offended is not even remotely relevant, and it is not "between them", it is between the offender and the city.

If the city is going to pass regulations then they need to be the ones to enforce them. It is not up to the neighbor to grow anything or negotiate compliance with the law.

Do you think it would be better for an official to correct a violation or to investigate a harrassment complaint or an assault?

"inconsiderate slack jawed hunter" that was a nice slur..for your info Theodore Roosevelt was an avid hunter and sportsman..perhaps you are a brainwashed vegetarian, refusing to consider other people's choices, but the fact is people require protein, and venison is an excellent choice, and obtained more humanely than the chicken and beef industries..hunters also cull herds of deer which otherwise would die of starvation or roadkill..must be nice to consider yourself a saint..
