Why are students from St. Lawrence County going to the State Fair to harrangue the SUNY Chancellor over her plans to consolidate administrators at SUNY Potsdam and SUNY Canton. ?
It's not going to affect their lives and one of lifes lessons they need to learn is that there are no free lunches...or at least there will be fewer of them in the years to come.
I don't lose sleep at night over whether the Canton president has or doesn't have his $180 K job.....I do worry the cost of college will price those who need the education out of the market and that means efforts at economies are to be lauded.

College kids aren't as smart as they used to be. Simple as that. Take a look at the photos of them. Most have been raised on twinkies and Ipods. When the college, or HS for that matter faculty, tells them to get excited, they gush all over the place. No independent thought process.
Obviously those students are smarter than you 4:17PM. The Chancellor should be ashamed of herself for talking down to them. But then she makes $490K per year so would have very little in common with mere students. She is giving them the same load of BS about how everyone is doing it - sharing presidents. Just read the WDT article from last week that shows the state systems in North Dakota and New Hampshire tried the same thing and discovered it didn't work!
These students simply aren't too bright and are being manipulated by SUNY Canton "fatcats ", These insolent brats are probably all on the government grant programs like EOP or HEOP or some other gravy train .
Its never about improving things or cutting redundant overhead . Its about keep those on the gravy train riding it at OUR expense.
Moreover it is PATENTLY ridiculous to say two college can't be consolidated . My God SUNY Buffal has 2 separate campus with degrees ranging across a broad programmtic array from Engineering, Medicine , pharmacy < Liberal Arts < Business etc and there are 35,000 students .
Many public universities have multiple campus single presidencies .It is NOT a new idea at all .
Get on with it !
The taxpaying public has been saddled with excessive costs for operating these VERY small schools and duplication of administrative and support service for too long.
Thinking people can see right thru the specious selfish self interest of SUNY CANTON FATCATS who refuse to face reality.
The recent behavior is yet another example of why too many under-qualified kids are getting into colleges and sucking up scarce public resources
The state and SUNY MUST change the way it operates . Multiple billion dollar deficits loom on the immediate horizon .
I find it quite refreshing that these young people have enough gumption to stand up for what they believe is right.
The state systems in the story last week are POOR examples .
They too were marginal , very small fiefdoms fiercely defending the status quo so they could hold onto their Fatcat status.
Expecting any small relatively undistinguished organization to seek alignment with another similar organization can never happen from within - they are simply unable to deal with it unemotionally, so it has to be done at the system level .
I agree with the Editorial in the GLENS FALLS POST STAR which supports this effort and realizes that it has to be done at the system level.
Look at Universities ( real ones, high quality institutions) In the land grant category that not only have huge enrollment but multiple campuses ),
Save the taxpayers this burden of supporting small duplicative , redundant fiefdoms.
I'm weary of listening to the WHINERS -- DO it and MOVE on . The system, atudents and taxpayers will ultimately reap the benefit.
Don't listen anymore to the fatcat whiners who only care about their largesse
We should bump the voting age back up to the drinking age to make sure these naive children cannot sway an election.
If they don't like the way SUNY canton is run they can always go somewhere else...maybe they could get into the University of Phoenix if they retook their SAT's and prepped with some classes first.
So proud to live in an area where bigotry is alive, well and on full display for all to see.
OK, fine. Keep all the Presidents of all the little schools everywhere. Divide their salaries up by the number of "students" living off Daddy's money and grant money, and simply add it to their tuition. Extra twinkies for all. So refreshing.
9:47, reference to those students actions as bigotry is a little over the top.
Good to see the RINO county RINO reps are proposing a new law to require a SUNY president at each campus.
8:53 AM obviously you need some coffee before blogging. It's the commentators not the students who are showing their bigotry!
In regard to 6:34's comments. If "The state systems in the story last week are POOR examples .
They too were marginal , very small fiefdoms fiercely defending the status quo so they could hold onto their Fatcat status." was true, then why did one of the people interviewed say that she was contacted by SUNY central to get her input on their harebrained plan? Just wondering.
8:53 AM obviously you need some coffee before blogging. It's the commentators not the students who are showing their bigotry!
It is obvious what you meant to imply and obviously you have no sense of humor. Obviously the word bigot never is used to describe someone on the left...AKA the ones that want to spend more tax money on SUNY presidents.
But since many a truth is told in jest, we might as well point out that your race baiting is a form of bigotry. And the like minded tax and spend/spend other peoples money mentality, embraced by the vast majority of people of color in this country, is also a form of bigotry. And the intolerance the left has for the Tea Party's fiscal conservation is also a form of bigotry.
But since I am not a race baiter I will not call you a bigot, with intolerance for other peoples opinions, at least not in seriousness, even if the definition fits...I think it is more harmless than that...that you are just stupid.
The "story of NH and ND" is both trivial and irrelevant to the real issue at hand . The story is strictly nonsense and designed to deflect attention from the serious problem of addressing multi year deficits.
The real story is NYS is going under , People are leaving in droves because of tax burdens,
And SUNY to its credit is trying to face and manage its future responsibly by cutting waste , duplication and redundant overhead .
I understand your emotional argument, i really do, but with multi billion dollar deficits looming and gloomy national economic predictions for the foreseeable future CHANGE in the form of Systemic consolidation and mergers will be an answer to providing more diversified academic programming in NNY and less redundant overhead. One can be offset by the other .
There is TOO MUCH redundant overhead and no justification for TWO SUNY schools 10 miles apart each with separate bureaucracies and duplicative services and staff to continue that way ,
UB in the SUNY system has been operating a much larger enrollment with a much more diversified array of academic programs on multiple campuses WITH ONE PRESIDENT,
So large multi campus operations under a single presidency is BEING done BOTH here AND at many Land Grant institutions across the USA.
Don't be talkin' sense here, 3:32. Not when a bunch of students, insulated from reality and cheered on by idiots can advocate otherwise. Hell, we got the money. Spend it. Just add it to their tuition and keep others from being able to attend college in the first place. Dumb sh#ts. Why try to convince fools to think. They're using their emotions, not their brains. They really seem to care.
Looks like 3:32 and others work for SUNY Central.
I beg your pardon 3:32 does NOT work for ANY govt agency or quasi government agency. For years i had my own business thank you and paid inordinate taxes .
But i do understand your reluctance to face reality.
I don't care whether you did or didn't, 7:04. A fool is a fool. I have no concern. Just keep all the administrators and raise the cost of going to college for the idiot kids. Problem solved. We have all the money we need. Spend it and enjoy. Why should any effort be made to save money? We certainly need a SUNY prezidint every eight miles.
2:22 I get your sarcasm BUT the ONLY problem with is SOMEof those "IDIOT kids" will be on the Government Grant programs with Zero payback ( EOP , HEOP ) and WE are paying for that ,any many OTHERS will fail to payback any government LOANS .
This Student loan default issue BTW will be the "bubble to break"
It would be like putting your $$$ on some nag at Saratoga that has never won a race and is lame to boot
