So the anecdotal evidence is true....There is an out-migration of people from NNY. That's no surprise and should be on the minds of attendees at today's Regional Economic Development Council meeting in Potsdam.
Out-migration is not unique to NNY but it is still a concern, which in Jefferson County has been masked by the economic engine called Fort Drum.......
In this story it is noted there recently was one Adirondack school district with only one member of its graduating class. That kinda tells it all.
Watertown Daily Times Over the decade, Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence county residents have fled by the thousands

So mayor,-- I'm curious,-- is there any manufacturing left at all in Watertown these days? What's there to keep people? Is it just a service based economy now,- period?
There are manufacturing jobs in plants like NY Air Brake and Knowlton Specialty Papers, both of which are doing well. However, as with much of the Nation's old industrial belt, the trend is towards service jobs. There are some newer, small industrial plants like Roth Industries that have cropped up. There are also the old stalwarts of the local economy, agriculture and tourism.
However, these service jobs in medicine, teaching, government, information management and in some cases retail are well paying.
There is no doubt, the presence of Fort Drum has created an anomaly in that the local economy does well despite the systemic woes that old industrial towns in the Northeast face.
According to MD23inPongoland, the migration of people from NY is "largely a myth".
The bigger share of our economy is the government. prisons healthcare teachers colleges.
I keep seeing new faces walking on the streets of Watertown but they don[t look like most of the people around here. that is because they sent here to get our free stuff by other places in the state that are running out of free stuff.
There have always been schools with one or 6 kids in them. Lets not make a big deal out of one in the Adirondacks...look at any of the old local history book pictures.
It may not be a fact yet....But if the economy in the nation doesn't take an uplift...Well my kids will have to leave here...Or work at Wally-World...Just a sad fact.
this is simple...take away there rights to listen to music, take away there music concerts, take away there beer, and do not give anything back to the tween generation and guess what they will leave, and so will there money, and ideas...a new leadership is needed in this city and it does not start with the mayor but rather city council and the managers office.

You ain't kiddin'! My wife just got her first raise in two years!! 19 cents more an hour!!!
Livin' the high life now.
Yeah, a school with one kid in it is no big deal.
Huh?
I don't remember seeing any graduation class photos consisting of one kid. Did they include the Superintendent, the Principal, the Assistant Principal, the Guidance Counselor, the Self-Esteem Coordinator, the Athletic Director, the Transportation Superintendent, the School Cop, the Department Heads, the Music Coordinator, the head of the Glee Club, the School Psychologist, the Teeth Checker, the Sex Ed Teacher, the School Social Worker who Finds out Stuff at Home Didler, etc?
Hey 343 you forgot the "Gay Club" coordinator.
This has been the goal of the Adirondack Park Agency from day one. To drive everyone possible out of the Adirondacks by making it impossible for any business to operate anywhere north of Albany. They have done a danged fine job of it, too!
