Some municipal clerks ( only a couple actually) continue to protest same sex marriage by resigning their post...Meanwhile here in Watertown, City Clerk Donna Dutton informed Council tonight her office will be open on Sunday July 24 to accommodate the first day SSM marriage licenses are legal to issue.
Ms. Dutton is handling the submissions on an appointment only basis, but says she wants to respect her new patrons by not making their special day a media event.
Ms. Dutton sets a high standard for tolerance and adherence to the law.
Her designated successor Ann Saunders was in attendance at the Council meeting tonight...The two rode downstairs in the elevator together after the meeting.

11:48, Apparently, the old standard was nominal...
Those clerks who were "forced" to resign ( No reasonable accommodation made for them, as has often been made for OTHERS ) have more courage and values than the legislators who voted for this less than satisfactory approach .
No one has difficulty with the extension of FULL civil rights to ALL. It is the vehicle that is offensive to many.
Instead of a reasonable compromise that could have met everyone's needs Legislators and the GOV weakly and like lemmings jumped off the cliff and PANDERED to a vocal minority.
They lacked the courage to put the question to the people or do the hard work ensuring the completeness and thoroughly nuanced civil union approach that would stand the TEST of meeting all civil rights needs while also respecting others .
BUT no our "reps" ??? chose the easy way out as they are Oft Wont to do.
. Put this to referendum and i'd wager a much different outcome.
I wonder IF there are any "rights" being violated on the reverse side of these clerk resignations . It would seem that perhaps a test case is in order to see how things sugar off on that issue , H'mmmm
Hey, except for her support for NancyCare, most all of us like and respect Donna Dutton. But let's not go all stupid about it, Jeff.
Why would you open on a Sunday to issue papers that are still no good the next day anyway? There is a one day wait. Makes not a drop of oil if she wasn't open. Sounds like pan-handling.
