With Andy's Agenda On the Line, Our Senator Will Be Popular

Had a well placed gadfly call today and we were chatting about various things including the pressures that will be brought to bear on Senator Ritchie as a couple of key issues float through Albany this spring.
Governor Cuomo wants a tax cap, gay marriage and ethics reform...The Governor doesn't enjoy losing, especially after his much heralded budget performance...Marriage equality is the tough issue as the Governor needs three or four GOP votes to make it happen and he has assured the LGBT coalition he will do so.
Senator Ritchie needs to keep five prisons open in her district.
Is that the beginning of  a beautiful relationship ?
Linkages are what lawmaking is all about...Always been that way..
The tax cap is being linked to NYC rent control...Upstaters want the cap...a limited but influential downstate crowd wants rent control.
Who knows what will happen, but I can foresee the freshman Senator being summoned to the Second Floor for some "frank" discussions about those five prisons.
That would be a little more stressful than her meeting with County Legislators, but then again its nice to be in a position where people need you.

Out of the numerous issues to vote on, why is it only those few that are on the table? Pattie voted for Andy's stupid budget so she better had gotten something promised as far as prisons go already. What else would she vote for the budget for? Tug hill?

So if she votes for gay marriage she should be getting something new and awesome not just keeping what she already has. You know...like she did with the county tax extortion.

Not for nothing, but your statement " Linkages are what lawmaking is all about...Always been that way.." is exactly the problem with government.

It's never about doing the right thing, it's always about selling your sole. Should the prisons we have stay in business. Yes or No. Should NY allow gay marriage. Yes or No.

Instead of I pat your back you pat mine, how about is this the best idea for the State or not.

After all, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results. For the past numerous years the results....Not so good.

Senators or anyone else in office SHOULD NOT/and indeed MUST not vote their personal views on any issues at any time ...

Otherwise, we have a dictator in office; and not a Representative.

I disagree Dan. If they tell the voters how they would vote before we put them in office, then they can vote that way. Plus in the case of gay marriage, half the voters are in favor of it. But the majority of the half of the voters that voted for her are against it. She should dance with the one that brought her to the dance.
