I am not a big fan of gimmick tax exemptions, even though I have supported them in the past...I was wrong...The better policy is to seek property or income tax relief or lower the the overall sales tax rate. These gasoline or clothing exemptions are pure politics.....
Anyway, the 7.75% sales tax rate is being preserved and that ironically will mean more revenue for local government as these gas prices rise and people visit our area this summer....The clarion call is for property tax relief...I know what the "play it safe" crowd says, but I can add....The gas run up allows local government to profiteer (yes, their price for gas is higher too). Skip the exemptions and go right to property tax relief.

Absolutely go for 'Property Tax Relief' and .75% sales tax drop would have helped cut costs in households around here.
Middle-Class Mike
How about instead of lowering property taxes, Watertown eliminate them altogether and rely solely on sales as some localities have done?
A "sales tax" only would kill and/or dry up communities where unemployment is high and w/o income, people don't have money to shop and spend, ergo: no taxes from sales.
Reasonable tax balance is the name of the game: that is fair, equal and is monitored closely to lower them when a certain level is reached - then give it back to the property holders.
Plus reduce tax-exempt organizations -- they share in tax-payer-provided services -- they should pitch in some, too.
A few years ago the Council exempted the first 40K off the assessments for combat vets, This coupled with the amount of property owned by NOT-FOR-PROFITS has effected the rest of the folks.
The .75% sales tax may drop cost of somethings but it will raise your property tax Mike. Would you rather pay .75% on goods or more rent/property tax??
8:06 you present Mikey with a false dichotomy. He would rather just tax the millionaires and not pay any tax himself.
Exactly 6:46, there's a handout for everybody. Dannie was all for that exemption for vets. But we have no profits, churchs, all kinds of propert paying no tax at all. And all of them deserve their little sweetheart deal. Just ask Dannie if he deserves his. They all believe the should get FreeStuff. Then they bellyache about subsidies complanies get. Its all about me.
