For All The Punditry and Analysis, Could It Be Hochul Won Because People Liked Her ?

Since everybody who fancies him or her self a talking head or a pundit is weighing in on NY26, a few observations of my own.
Rep-elect Kathy Hochul in large part did well because she was a hard working, good candidate who came across well to voters compared to her self financed and mistake prone opponents.
The craven exploitation of the Medicare issue helped, as so did the juvenile attempt at an ambush of the elderly third party candidate by a staffer for GOP candidate Jane Corwin, who reacted pitfully to the incident.
A variety of factors enter a race like this, but as many times as the favorite may err, it still requires a solid campaign effort by someone to take advantage of it. Ms. Hochul, regardless of issues, did a good job and was able to take advantage of her opponents weaknesses. A lot of people liked her. That is often why people vote for someone.

I heard you say that on the hotline yesterday and have thought the same thing before. Someone could probably prove or disprove your point using statistics.

But the more I think about it, the negative campaigns are the biggest factors. It comes down to how effective are you at making the swing voters hate your opponent. The problem is that some reasons are valid, such as Dede being a cardcheck gay marriage spear-header. Others are not, such as a BWI or making money on Wall street or Dede supporting home rule sales tax rates.

It comes down to marketing.

The craven exploitation of the Medicare issue helped

funny, but as part of the affordable care act the democrats cut $500 billion of genuinely wasteful medicare spending. and then in the elections last year the republicans hammered them for it. and i sure don't remember the mayor calling the republicans out for any "craven exploitation" of the issue. and now the republcan house has voted to do away with medicare as we know it -- that's not hyperbole, it's exactly what they voted to do -- and somehow the democrats are craven and exploitative when they point out that this is not a good idea, and speaks to a real difference between the parties.

mr. mayor, you need to pay better attention!

Rep. Elect Kathy Hochul was a good candidate, but it would be fuzzy thinking to feel that Paul Ryan’s Medicare Plan didn't leave Republican Jane Corwin in the cold politically speaking. She couldn't win proposing Paul Ryan's 'Medicare Voucher System' to the voters of NY 126.

"Craven exploitation"? Of the truth?
As opposed to the "noble exploitation" of the "death panel" lie.
Stellar republican hypocrisy and denial.

I'm with Mikey. The Elephants were stupid to tell people there will have to be changes in FreeStuff policy. They should do what the Donkeys do. Tell the sheeple that all is well. Remain calm. Money will show up from somewhere. Do not concern yourselves. Everything is beautiful. Don't address anything. Borrow and print money. Ask yourself. What have you gotten for free lately?

Dear Mayor Graham: Paragraphs like this reveal one thing, and one thing only: your excellence as an experienced and highly skilled politician. Cheers! Clink...Sip...Smile...

And Klevwit has a point too. The Donkeys cut $500billion from Medicare and called it a a cut of waste. When Elephants proposed a restructuring, it was called killing grandma. MSM complied and pushed the appropriate labels and the voters were stupid. I still say, don't propose a thing. All is well. I don't have any kids. I have no problem screwing yours.

Today's Greata. That winning Hochul in the 26th got 1% more than Obama did in that district when he LOST it in '08. Why did she win this time? Because a third party took from the Republicans. If Dems think that's a great indicator of trend, so be it. Then again Greta has been known to be one of those "conservative sluts" we've been hearing about lately. Imagine if that had been said by a conservative. Luckily, it was a Dannie type.

No, just tell seniors in the near future, here's your vouchers; now go fend for yourself even if you are eighty years of age.

As usual, Mikey isn't telling the entire story. He keeps things simple, like his degree plan was.

Did anyone compare the turnout for this special election compared to the other ones in 20, 23, and 29 the past two years?

Approximately 160,000 people voted in NY-20 in May 2009.

Approximately 150,000 people voted in NY-23 in November 2009.

Approximately 170,000 people voted in NY-29 in November 2010.

Approximately 110,000 people voted in NY-26 in May 2011.

That's a huge drop. It seems more like the people who would have voted for Corwin just decided to stay home instead. Consider the fact that Corwin won every county except Erie and Niagara-- but by much narrower margins than usual. There was no groundswell of support for Hochul-- just extreme dislike of Corwin.

That's a good point, 2:06. The people who are motivated to vote are interested in keeping FreeStuff. The rest are resigned to paying for it. Here in NY that pretty much is the way things work out. Even with this tax cap thing, there will be enough loopholes for the spenders to keep on going with the looting. Does anybody expect NY to give up its top rating in taxation and spending? Andy has been good in some ways, but this is still the Empire State. The Empire of the teacher union and other special interests.

You're just propagandizing and it’s so obvious you hate Unions and teachers. The mystery about the 'Tax Cap' is that it got passed at all: if you're thinking is right, teachers voted against their interest, because on average they'd have increased the Property/School Tax by 4% or more in NYS without passing the 2% TAX CAP.

Rachel Maddow wins the best line of the election in NY 26 "All politics is Hochul!"
Read it and weep GOP.

It is not the GOP that should weep
it is our children

Does anybody have any idea what Mikey's point is this time?
