With the budget decided and issues like the official state vegetable unlikely to see legislative action, the attention of official Albany will turn this spring to same sex marriage....aka 'marriage equality.'
Its not something that's a big issue in upstate districts, but polling data shows increasing acceptance of the change. Two years ago the matter failed in the Senate by a 38-24 vote with a handful of Democrats joining all the Republicans in opposing it.
This year Governor Cuomo is fully behind the change and the LGBT, or whatever the acronym is, is a big deal in NYC politics. Its sort of like the NRA in rural districts as lawmakers seek the endorsement.
Of course I am in no way equating guns and gays. Its just that certain interest groups are important in certain areas......
The composition of the Senate is similar to two years ago, and to pass this will take a couple GOP votes.
I suspect our Senator will not be as quick to post on Facebook about this issue as she was chili or kickball. A lot of people surely favor the change up here too or at least are ambivalent.....A lot are against too.
Where as polling showed support for kickball was north of 90%.

It would be passed already if it were not for Democrat senators voting against it too...so you could just as easily say the pro-gray-marriage-side has not much say in the democrat party either.
More accurate to say they do not have carte blanche when it comes to this single special interest issue that the public is divided right down the middle on yet is referred to as extreme if you are on the wrong side...even if you are in favor of civil unions you are still extreme if you don't cave completely. And if you are a republican and you come on the correct side then you are a "moderate."
A good republican would say that her views on this issue are not the deciding factor and she is obligated to vote the will of the people that elected her, but she could support civil unions as a compromise. Which is the true definition of a moderate, rather than the MSM definition, in which someone supports an extreme viewpoint from both major parties depending on the issue.
I think zeppelin should be the State dog and Aubertine should be the State vegetable. Or, maybe the turnip.
anons 11:07 and 11:15,
who is saying that it's an "extreme" position to oppose same sex marriage? where are you getting this idea from?
i happen to think it's really wrong to oppose same sex marriage, but there's nothing extreme about it. lots of people oppose it, after all. and i think that's how basically all proponents of equality feel about it.
Will Dede deliver her pal Patty for Gay Marriage? That should be the question of questions...anyone actually seen her take a stand on the issue? Not me.
This summer when we are paying $6 a gallon on fuel who will care if men marry men? I sure won't.
Time for Patty to start looking into pulling some of tax off gas.
Any Republican simply votes 'no' on all gay "rights," otherwise they might as well be a Democrat. That is one of the reasons we sent them there, they said they would vote for leadership that would not bring it up for a vote. I didn't volunteer on Patty's campaign for her to be more extreme then the guy we got rid of
A good issue to dominate the news and whip everyone up into a silly frenzy and get the public to take our eye off the real problems we face - good for them. Nice touch.
So, what's next? Determing the color of beach sand, or adopting a state cat to go along with the state dog? When does this silliness end?
Probably never. We are used to it.
