While NNY lawmakers can't get enough prisons, one long time prison community increasingly wants its prison closed....The phrase "up the river" was coined for Ossining where the Sing Sing prison occupies a large portion of the scenic Hudson River village....They want the prison closed so the scenery can be enjoyed and they don't seem to care about the 800+ jobs....
Ossining is increasingly a place where the NYC crowd wants to take the short commute up the river for a more bucolic lifestyle...
Closing the historic prison would end a chapter in NYS history as so many famous and infamous have lived and died there. Funny how the gentrified people of Ossining want the prison gone but another community starting with the same letter seems to desparately be begging for the the same industry.

There is nothing strange about it. Just as a Nike sweat shop is a boon for a third world nation but not wanted in our country, these crap prison jobs are a boon for the north country but not wanted in communities so close they can leach of the financial capital for the world
...and you could bet your last dollar our north country prisons are staffed with higher caliber employees too.
Bringing Sing SInG to the BURG would seal the doom of the Burg . It will be the penal colony of nys and will drive out all but those who have no other options.
Ogdensburg is terrible now, adding sing sing would be the final straw .
Would they tear it down? I would think it would become a toured sight or something else.
No one wants another prison up here except union goof- offs who have nothing else to offer in terms of skills but guarding creeps or pervs or prisnahs .
We need private sector employers not another damn prison
No way anyone wants thesee prisons up here except jerkoffs like Bill Nelson and Mike Powers. Theere is a lot more people in Ogdensburg that wants the prisons gone than would like them to stay. I point out that includes Riverview..
This community is so far behind the times they just found out their Bridge and Port Authority has been negotiating with a turbine manufacturer.. As usuall the city council is on page three of a four page book.
Really. "No way anyone wants these prisons up here except jerkoffs.." Wow, that's some real thoughtful stuff. I'm not sure we want unlimited state prison expansion, but do we really want to chase away these kinds of jobs? How many millions of dollars go into The Burg because of those two prisons? I realize we're behind the times but don't we want to go easy on being stupid?
No More Prisons Period !! Get something here that enhances the Quality of Life-------- NOT Prisons Pervert Palaces or drug dealers.
There is an OVER- dependence on State govt spending here , we need PRIVATE sector organization . This prison culture here is what is driving decline .
I'm with Ossining 's voters Get these prisons out of our town . We have a beautiful River too and could be attracting re- gentrification $$ and provide attractive sites for retirees with $$ -----------IF we can get rid of the damn prisons and Pervert Palace and druggies first. We need to upscale the Burg NOT continue to make the SAME mistakes that attract the dregs
You make it sound like they built the prisons and arrested people to fill them. The truth is that they arrest people everyday here and all over the country for crimes. They just need a place to put them. Yes I would love to see a art center go up instead. The demand in our system right now is for more prisons. People are not so much into art as they are drugs and whores.
So build them downstate NOT here we have an OVER concentration here that is an overwhelming disadvantage.
NNY has become a penal colony and a magnet for all the social detritus that comes from this highly inefficient/ineffective system (NYS has a very high cost and very high rate of recidivism when compared to nationally normed data on corrections).
Not only should the system be Privatized but the facilities should be located elsewhere allowing the BEST use of our River / Lake front potential as an economic magnet for regentrification and relocation for retirees with $$
This approach increases BOTH the tax base and enhances the Quality of Life . Something prisons FAIL to due
