WDT: Watertown to Chicago Coming Soon
The federal government will spend $6.1 million over the next two years so Watertown International Airport will have a carrier. American Eagle will fly twelve flights a week to Chicago's O'Hare Airport....A string of subsided carriers have come through the local airport in recent years as the bulk of consumers continue to take the quick drive to Syracuse for most of their air service needs. The airport located in Dexter is a nicer facility since Jefferson County took over its operations. The federal money is part of a program purporting to provide "essential air service" to rural and isolated communities where having a carrier is not economically feasible. Let's see how this works out. Watertown Daily Times Feds pick Chicago flights for Watertown

Dammit Jeff, now I'm pissed.
Why wouldn't they bring in a air service that goes to NYC? Hell I would fly every weekend just to go and see the shows. Or at least near NYC.
It doesn't matter where the flights go. It won't work. Millions will be wasted. There isn't demand enough to fly out of Watertown. Never has been. That's why politicians throw money at it and buy some votes from dumbasses.
Is the Hastings Airport yet??
I, for one, am glad to see flights finally headed to a Westernly destination connecting flights will be more directly accessible.
I never flew out of Watertown because of that reason ... I didn't want to go to Boston, Albany or NYC first. I always drove to Syracuse and flew to Charlotte or Detroit to connect to my final destination.
I look forward to this new service.
Make sure they plow the runway?
Lets quit wasting money on this airport, and take the fifty five minute drive to Syracuse to board a flight.the only ones benefiting from this airport is Mr. Brouty, and the hand full or private plane owners.
Why wouldn't they bring in a air service that goes to NYC?
Because if they departed and landed in NY they would have to pay outlandish NY taxes.
The federal money is corporate welfare.
Welfare is when you pay someone to not work, stay home, do drugs, make ugly dumb babies, or raise misbehaving children.
This money is paying a company to do something productive.
Lets call it a corporate scholarship.
There isn't demand enough to fly out of Watertown.
The demand is there just not everyday and not for business.
You could fill a jet going to spring break on a lot of weekends.
I'm talking taking a fun trip on the weekend...Not business. Still I get you all the way.
12 flights a week.
That's 624 flights a year, right?
At $6,100,000, that's $9,775 per flight.
Hell. For a lot less than $6,100,000 a year, I'll buy a bus or a van and make 12 shuttle runs a week to the Syracuse airport. Makes a Hell of a lot more sense.
Yeah but were talking the Feds right? On another note I watched the Bus from St. Lawrence Co. come down Rt. 11 with NO PASSENGERS, and then Drive back with the same number, talk about a waste.
For $10k in government subsidies per flight, they could provide a little companionship for the flight. That would employ half the babymommas on in East Side. Then again we'd have to pay for the result.
8:33 There will be nothing "productive" that comes of this. Just like the last corporate provider, when the company finds out how much they are losing on these flights, they will break off service and be out of business. We will end up paying for nothing. Again. Wise up. But count on Schmuck Schumer coming up here next time with a new subsidy to get yet another airline to do the same thing in a couple years...with our money.
