WDT: Bullying Grants Ladled on NNY Schools...How About a Grant to Teach Manners ?

What is this all about ? Millions for bullying prevention in three local school districts.
How about teaching math, English, history ? Concentrate on basics and cut the feel good trendy stuff. Bullying is something principals and teachers should discourage for sure, but we need to spend money on core services.
The other day there was a White House conference on bullying and the President told us all people made fun of his ears when in school....Well, he went on to the Presidency, so it must not have been too traumatic...
I get it, the Internet provides the venue for some incredible cruelty and technology can amplify nastiness, but I just find all the talk of cutting to the bone a little hollow when there are grants for bullying.
Watertown Daily Times North school districts receive grants for bullying prevention

Violent urges are manageable. Students can be taught to handle their emotions in rational non-violent ways that make school safe for everyone in the building to Teach and learn there can be pleasant instead of gut wrenching on a daily basis. Have we forgotten how students can walk into a school and start shooting people already? Once a week it seems there's a story showing some parent going onto a School bus confronting a student, in some case six years of age, for supposedly bullying their child. This is a good program Mayor Graham and I support it. I also feel English, Social Studies, Teachers deserve decent pay.

This is total nonsense and shows just how compromised we are as a society.

Where's MY grant ?? I want mine . I was bullied as a kid too , got called names , slurs etc but WE HANDLED OUR OWN PROBLEMS when i was a child and often became friends with those with whom we had Issues .

This current problem is all part of growing up in the era of BUILDING SELF ESTEEM ( telling kids how GREAT they are for getting C's or going 1 for 30 at the plate or walking and chewing gum at the same time -- Great Job Buddy)and then Adults solving problems FOR them.

The worst case of bullying is when a group of people forms a government then taxes money from the producers and spends it on stupid stuff.

people who aren't parents oughta stay out of this one.......

You have to be a parent to understand bullying? That is a ridiculous statement.

People who do not run their own homes with fiscal pragmatism ought to stay out of this one...

Absolutely, any reason we can muster to shovel money into our government schools is reason enough for me. All yous need is a fashionable excuse, which this bullying thing serves to be. Tomorrow, who knows, it may be those who wear Michael Moore type hats and insist on getting their photo taken in condescending poses with the disadvantaged. They need help too. If you see a child developing along these lines, all the Assistant Superintendent for Quacky Self Image Adjustment Office, located at BOCES.

I'm a parent and THINK its way over the line.

What do you mean it is over the line?

The thing is, that even before they required those stupid useless BS masters degrees in education, every teacher that was worth her salt, knew about bullying and knew how to nip it in the bud. Pretty much like any parent already knows too.

So what were all those credit hours in education teaching our teachers? They never covered the topic of bullying?

You THINK its way over the line?Well then do your job as a parent and support your kid. Help your child grow to deal with the problems of life. Don't look for a grant from the rest of us to "fix" a problem that has been around for a thousand years. Puke.

We now have another pusher from the Johnson news family, Sarah Haase, congratulating Lyme Central School for $600k coming in for bullying money. I'm not sure who bullied who. Just hours ago Superintendent Donohue was telling us how terrible it is to be running a rural district in NYS, and POOF, we gotcher bully money. I'm usually at work and have no time to visit Lyme school at 2:00pm or whenever it is they call it a day, but I'll betcha there ain't no roving gangs of bullys down there threatening to throw skinny kids with outdated IPODs into the Chaumont River. But I do wish Mz Donohue the very best at attacking the problem. And thanks to the WDT for cheerleading yet another program that will help cure a problem that is terribly vexing.

so how should bullying in school be handled? with guns? You people never have a better idea, you only bitch and complain.

Anonymous said...

No 7:19 we handle it by parents being parents and educators doing the jobs they are already being paid for. Don't be stupid.

Actually, if you shot a bully or two you might be surprised how fast the others might shape up. Ahh, probably not a reasonable proposal. I jest.

It's amazing that children of earlier eras were able to grow up just fine without all the extra coddling, hand-holding and p.c. grant money programs.

Bottom line, any decent Parent is not going to allow their offspring to be a bully. That's the way we did things when I was a kid. No need for Big Government to stick their nose in.

What I'd like to see next is a program to address heavy books. Mikey and others will appreciate how heavy books are causing our little children to have bad bones and a limited future due to grunting and groaning. Like Mikey, they could grow up to have mis-shapen spines, not totally spineless, but a spine that doesn't really stand for anything. I say Mz Donohue down at Lyme should lead the way in securing government grants to either find out how to make books lighter or, possibly, a parallel bus delivery system that would deliver the books to the appropriate household so the child could do the homework assigned to him/her that particular evening. That could be the next arena of public school grants. And Lyme Central, after it cleans up its gang and bullying problem, could lead the way into the future. Mikey, Mz Donohue, have you considered this during your trips to the Tiki Bar?

Hey 10:07 is the shooting working with crows? I thought that's why we had COPS in schools? A lot of times in life we deal with a problem all wrong, take for instance banning Guns say at collages, we create a GUN-FREE zone, when we have created a FREE-FIRE-ZONE.

Well, in fairness 3:59, we never really tried shooting the crows. We have tried harrassing them with rap music but that has simply developed their dancing abilities. We were gonna oil their eggs like we did the cormorants. But the Feds wouldn't allow the oil to be drilled. Myself, I'd put all the bums to work. Dress 'em up like Tippi Hedron and have 'em walk around.

Wonder why the schools get the money for the Anti-Bullying program? How about a YMCA, or another organization, The story goes on to say we'll HIRE a cop for it, Seems odd, with the cost of pensions and health care. I mean the resource officer didn't work the first time around and bullying still exsists.

No no. The schools are the one's who cry the most and have the strongest lobbying team. And besides, the Y's have 'christian' in their name. Not a good thing. Can't have that. Anywhere. Bullying has existed forever. The only way to control it is for parents and teachers to stay involved. Giving the teachers money is about the only way to get their attention. That, and holding the hankie when they cry. There is a correlation between money given and tears shed. Give responsibly.
