A survey shows 85% of the state's 700 plus school superintendents intend to raise property taxes as part of their response to the Governor'sproposed budget. Larger class sizes and elimination of popular sports and extracurricular programs are also listed as actions to be taken.
The superintendents are not proposing structural changes in the manner education is delivered and this survey shows no interest in reducing the size or scope of administrative expenses.
Districts are also planning some layoffs.

Sen. R. stated on z93 this morn. she is not the schools systems whipping girl and she is doing her darn best to get the school more money without driving the rich out of NY. Makes a good story...I hope it's all true.
Too bad the governor doesn't propose using experts to do the "rightsizing"/"downsizing"/"value engineering" and is leaving it up to the local superintendents instead.
Of course, if he had any experience whatsoever in the real world, he would know that is how it is done in industry because it takes special skills and a second set of eyes to see what needs to be done. But like our empty suit president, our empty suit governor has no experience except for taking OPM and redistributing it.

Whether you like it or not, a majority of voters chose Cuomo. That's the way the system works. You ran a candidate who had less appeal. There will be another election in four years.
If the taxpayers rise up and protest at the school budget meetings in the same manner the bused in SEIU goons did last year in Albany perhaps some change will occur. If not taxes will rise, salaries will rise and of course taxes will rise...big time!
"Fifty-percent of the respondents said they would seek to freeze or cut spending, but 85 percent said they would have to seek a property-tax increase."
So only about 15% are willing to contain their excessive labor costs and operate within their (substantial) means...
“This may give fodder to those who are pushing for a property tax cap, but what the public needs to realize is that school districts are forced to bear ever-increasing costs over which they have little or no control,”
No, the public realizes that the reason for those "ever-increasing costs" is because they haven't scrutinized labor costs until now.
No if its left up to the local supers we'd be taxed to death, Thanks Warren Fargo, and Hank Zygadlo.
why is there no talk or mention of school districts having employees pay more then their 0-10 for health insurence, overall that should save enough money to keep some teachers? selfish?
The teachers will get their raises one way or the other. They could care if their fellow teachers are laid off. Hey, it is for the kids.

I hope none of it is true, CR. I hope she is ready to teach the teachers that the fat and happy days are over. I'm disappointed in you that you feel we should shovel more sh@t into their fire. Have you noticed Mr Johnson's daily puke job in support of the education sewer? There isn't a day now that we are not treated to multiple garbage stories of what will be lost, of how the continent will sink, how the clouds will gather, how a billion teachers will lose their babies. I can only wish Mr Johnson would spend the bribe money on following up on what actually happens this fall. Just like last year, it is all a hypothetical based on nothing but one sided lies. And our media has full time apologists who tow the line, gladly presenting as fact what the administrators hand them. This is a turning point for people. Not only do we have to cut school fat, we have to do so for a few years in a row. No matter what we hear from the compliant media.
So please help us fix the problems, first we need you to sighn in under your real name big shot....9:13Anoymous poster you have all the answers under some nobody tag, adleast jump in.you talk so nasty about the media yet you leave no name...coward
"Coward" and "big shot". Is that really the way you want to do business? Juston, you have every media outlet, every taxpayer funded mouthpiece, every do good child loving administrator on your side. Yet you feel the need to throw a temper tantrum when people resist further expenditures. Juston, we are the highest taxed state in the nation. We have lost more jobs than any other state. All these people who express love for children are being paid by the propaganda machine we finance. Don't you think its time to rethink the formula? This is not sustainable. People are trying to hang on. And most do not have the advantage of being on their local school district's payroll.
People WILL vote with their feet.
Summer-folk will suffer an increase in temperature to save 300% on a comparable home's property/school taxes south of here.
NY is known as having nearly the highest cost per student public schools without 50% higher student gpa's.
My CPA tells me that he's been notified of sweeping NY state income tax changes, where part time residents will pay NY state income tax based on the number of days they stay in NY even if they don't earn a living in NY and regardless whether they're here 2 weeks or 25 weeks in a year.
There once were mansions up and down the St.Lawrence that were abandoned and left to crumble with no interest by anyone for generations... History will repeat itself.
Hey 217 Boldt Castle didnt crumble taxpayers funneled 25 million into that. Now with the upcoming tax for Canuks coming into this country no one will go there.
