New York's New Steamroller Will Have a Tough Time With an Encore
Governor Cuomo is getting high marks for at least taking a first step at containing costs in a state where spending is so institutionalized in law that it will take many more battles to get things right. Trimming spending in actual dollars rather than phony cuts is a good start. The challenge in the future is to reform the structures of government and that has to come from Albany. You cannot fight every year the 700 plus superintendents and the maze of labor laws that ensure any move at economy is portrayed as punishment for children and sick people. In 2011 we learned that a cut is a reduction in actual dollars, not just a reduction in the rate of increase. Nothing was done in the area of mandate relief or restructuring of government. The SAGE Commission still has to meet. Lots still has to be done. Andrew Cuomo has proven he has the demeanor to push lawmakers......But as we saw with George Pataki, a year or two in office wears you down.... Can New York's new steamroller keep rolling ? Time will tell, but history suggests its a tough battle ahead for Andy. Forget Spitzer and Paterson: In Gov. Cuomo, New York has a 'steamroller' that works

The man deserves a lot of credit for facing down the army of special interests. I have more respect for Mr Cuomo than any state leader we've had in years. Imagine the tears and angst in the halls of spending institutions everywhere. And MSM has to be deeply concerned. All their sob stories went unheeded. `Locally, my condolences to Scotty Atkinson and Mr Johnson. For once, it didn't work.
But as we saw with George Pataki, a year or two in office wears you down
You cannot draw a conclusion based on the actions of one RINO
Nice that the MSM and Obama did not attack Cuomo like they did our to other blind governor when he tried to make cuts and pleaded with the legislator to make cuts.
Of course the real credit for all of this cutting belongs to the republican run senate.
As an encore, he could do what Ontatio Premier Mike Harris did in 1995 which was to force municipal mergers and consolidation.
That would truly be epic and historic.
If "we the people" continue to stand behind him and support his efforts he will succeed.
First off you have to thank his father for giving him the Gold Spoon, no it's not envy its just a fact.I am glad to have him as our Governor.I think he realy does have adleast one caring bone, along with some comen sense bones to help him guide this state. The budget process is still very confusing to the normal Joe.If those three men in a room came out with bloody nose, hair standing up shirts ripped,it would make more sense. They told me they where going to fight for what was right! We have been told for months differnt things on several diffent issues its poluted with propaganda spin, we are going to have to weed threw the small talk the tough guy talk & the actual what took place talk we have no clue thanks to spin doctors I can't say I dont have a clue I do!!thats what makes it the budget process of the Great State Of New York drama, drama, drama.Should we be satisfied with 270 million being put back in for Education (or not) well if it's coming up North yes we should, although I would rather not see it cut at all, times are tough......
I wish he had failed.
This lightweight change will likely be just enough to allow us to continue the status quo instead of the drastic changes that are needed.
We need a Christie or a Walker but with this fake version of one, we are never going to see a real reformer because the issue will not be forced.
You notice he didnt have to go to the extremes such as in Wisconcin. Now perhaps he can get to his agenda and cut some of these phony commissions, authorities close the prisons and get the correctional division consolodated.
These predator units need some attention also.
On the local levels we as taxpayers need to get out and assure the superintendants dont get their tax raises. Start attending and see who on your school boards support raising taxes and vote them out. Its time for consolodation and for the administrators to feel the pain also.. If they dont its yyour own fault because we control the school boards...
The only reason he has been able to get as far as he has without the entire Democrat machine screaming "RAPE!" and "FOR THE CHILDREN!" is because he is a Democrat and didn't telegraph what he was up to.
Can't demagogue a Big 'D' democrat.
Anon 11:47 The aftermath of those forced mergers and consolidation is truly epic and historic, they are now in worse shape and paying more in property taxes. Truly epic.
7:56 How do you know that? Do you have a source for that info?
I am about the only one around with the insight to realize consolidation will end up costing more money except for in a handful of obvious cases.
It ended up being a cut of 2%.
2 lousy percent.
And the Mikey and Juston types think this is just disaster. As long as our state is populated by people who believe more and more is the answer we will never have opportunity for anyone. We will slowly decay, as we've been doing for two generations.
Congratulations to all for the difficult decisions you made. Puke.
9:22 I can't provide a link to source. My proof comes in the form of my yearly tax bill and the constituents of North Frontenac. The situation there is much like NY, the province loves to pass down unfunded mandates and regulation, while local government looks to do the best they can for the people.
Anon11:49p.m (Gun Nut) shut up & pay up bawahhhhhhhhhh...watch the news the New York capital is going to fill up with protest on Wed.People are bringing pillows...Its not the little guys fault so don't give me that shit we all have to pull our fair share.Greed filled guys like you are the problem keep crying foul though it makes you look so stupid when you do it,then five minutes later your going to a fund raiser for some rich guy who needs a new lexus.I don't wanna here that,no more class war fair bull. You are always talking about how much you already do for the poor. I will be the one to tell you not enough is done.
No Juston. Not the nut you're speaking to, but a nut nonetheless. I have no problem with the money being shoveled around. As a dedicated government employee I am fully receiving my share. You just keep fighting for what you think is right. I'll tell your kids where to send the money. And tell your wife where to bring the coffee.
