WDT: School Scores Not Fault of District Leaders

OK, the NYS Education Department sets the standards...NYS Ed is run by educators...And so when local districts fall short meeting criteria, can't someone just step up and say we owe it to the community...to the taxpayers and to the children to do better ?
Instead the quotes are all about excuses...all about how the state changed the standards...
Hey, we all play by the rules set and when I looked at the tables of results the other day, the substandard graduation rates in Watertown stood out. They weren't my numbers or my goals or conclusions...
I would be getting ahead of this curve...hold a press conference...go on a talk show...explain all this and what you are doing about it.
To all the superintendents...these are your numbers....your peers came up with the methodology. No excuses please.

I blame the board of education.
The school has been underperforming historically.
I bet if they recruited the GB superintendent he would turn things around.
If not…at least they tried. So far they have not tried.

At the same time, you cannot put a gallon water in a quart container.
I suspect that Watertown has a lot of quart-container-students.

Being in the bar business, you see what happens when they pass smoking ban laws or happy hour laws. You come up with a way to get around the law.
The schools are not so lucky. They passed a law that every student from valedictorian to window licker has to pass that regents and be in the same classroom sitting next to each other. It is no longer acceptable to divide student up into groups based on their ability or performance or behavior.

How do you fix that?
And when you try, who pays for the lawsuits?
Who pays for that lawsuit where the gay kid at IR is suing for title nine rights?
And Obama’s AG has signed on as a friend of the court?

If we just passed a law allowing teachers to use corporal punishment like they do at the catholic schools then maybe that would go a long way.

Mayor, President and Laura Bush and 'No Child Left Behind' which wasn't properly funded by the way is responsible for this. The idea that you can just teach to test is part of the Bush Mantra and Mayor Bloomberg's in NYC, with his proxy Joe Klein shilling for him for a decade. Stop blaming the wrong people for Children getting a poor education. For most Supt. in the State of New York, it was do it or else, so they went with the program.

Your side bar is interesting about sick time.. How do you veiw sick time paid sick time and how would you recommend curbing its abuse?

Yes Mikey. Its George Bush's fault. They didn't FUND it enough to suit your ilk. No surprise there. Its funny. When your schools were taking the money it was a fine progam. Then, when accountability got mixed in. It became a terrible thing. Stand back. We don't want your puke to hit your shoes.

When it comes to all the "problems" associated with education, we are all experts on fixes, aren't we?

The "No Child Left Behind" act IS the problem. When teachers have to put twenty or so other students "on hold" during their classes so that "slow" Johnny can catch-up, the pace of the whole class changes dramatically.

When I went to school, the special need students had their own school and/or classes so that the rest of the students weren't "dragged-down" to their level.

Just think of what the workforce would look like if there was a "No Employee left Behind" law.

It's high time that folks, especially Liberals, come to the realization that all people are NOT the same, and no matter how much you sugar-coat things, there's always going to be dumb kids. So quit blaming Teachers and/or Administators if little Johnny can't cut the mustard. In the wise words from Ron White..."You can't just fix stupid."

When it comes to all the "problems" associated with education, we are all experts on fixes, aren't we?

Since a lot of us spent 13 or more years going to school five days a week, and we all have experience teaching somebody...either our siblings or subordinates or our children, education is one place where we are all kind of experts in a way.

There is hardly a child that most of us could not teach better than the public system "experts" do. The proof is in the home schooling statistics!

You know something...I can understand why I hold my opinions in high regard...reflecting on a life of overachieving, success and accomplishments. But I don't understand why the rest of you feel that your opinions are worthwhile?

They should have spent some of that money on educating you.. thier

One thing is for sure, it never is the fault of any education professional when shovels full of money fails to produce results. There's only one answer to this. More money. Or is the the right kind of money. Or is it the money at the right people. Or maybe not enough shovels. At least we can all agree that it was Bush's fault, eh Mikey?

The key to changing education is reforming tenure. The existing system protects bad teachers and hurts kids.

Well I just knowed the Watertown Times and Jamie Munks would find the time to talk to Jackie Boak one more time before the weekend was out. This time, they had time to hook up a defense for why all the local schools failed to bring up test scores. The Jamie and Jackie show is almost a daily event now. If it isn't pain and suffering, its an excuse as to why all the zillions bought nothing at all. And why more money is in order. I say the WDT should have a competition for a jingle. You knows, a little music into to the Jamie and Jackie Show. Something upbeat and dancie. Get Jackie in there with a cane and a top hat with a dollar sign on it. Jamie can be dressed in an I Dream of Jamie outfit, lookin' good. Next Week, look out for the episode on BUS RIDES: CAN YOU LIVE WITH 8 ON A BUS!!! Next up on the Jamie and Jackie Show, dada da.

Tests scores will go up when you stop teaching to tests. That's the joke, decades of wasting the kids time and blaming teachers for it. Try going with the Teachers and what they tell you will work. That's what they never do, it's always the Feds or State telling you what to teach and they haven't a clue as we all know.
