The drumbeat has begun...Ritchie misses a legislative hearing on education to tour a prison possibly closing and she is excoriated....Ads have begun attacking Mayor Bloomberg for asking for an end to last in, first out hiring.
The superintendents are calling the reporters married to teachers to get their message out...
That message is simple...We will not tolerate austerity in our industry...Cut something else or raise taxes.
The children will be the human shield to protect a bloated and bureaucratic system...And since most people want whats best for their kids, the message will resonate.
The notion that some people want whats best for kids through reform and accountability is not something you will hear much of in the weeks ahead.

Isn't it interesting that the money war began the day AFTER taxes were due?
Nothing will be cut. Andy tried a moderate, reasonable approach to reigning in the teachers. Even that won't stand. Its not like you didn't know this was going to happen, Mr and Mrs Taxpayer. Sob story coming on Channel 7, nightly. Brought to you by a news director whose wife is also employed by system.

The word "reform" has not had any valid meaning for at least two years now.
No One has proposed anything smart yet. We have heard Cuomo light criticize superintendents pay. We have heard him mistakenly suggest that consolidation would save money. We have heard him propose emulating the stupid tool of the Obama administration for giving away education funds to the schools of his choice instead of by a strict formula.
As far as I am concerned, they hired the best teachers they could find during the interview process. Then they kept them on for 3 years before deciding to either get rid of them or give them tenure. Last in first out is every bit as reliable as the way Bloomberg is proposing. If you don't trust they made good decisions during the hiring and tenure process then why would you trust them to make layoff decisions now?
I am 100% in favor of redefining what "education rights" students have and cutting pay and benefits to teachers. Pay should peak out after five or seven years. But so far no one has proposed reform they have just proposed cutting.
Until we start dividing kids up into groups based on the child's performance and or potential, like we used to do when I was a kid, then our education system will continue to fail.
AJR stated the Cuts will be kept.
She is just talking. All the education "cuts" will be quietly restored. Every district will quietly rehire all connected people. Budgets will rise. Addie Jennie Whatever is fully owned by the teachers. Her claims that the modest "cuts" will stay is simply part of the hysteria.
Anon 12:57 You hit it. Except for the fact that administrators do whatever they can to keep their "slush funds" and "crony $$$" in place. I speak from experience.
So does this mean the Watertown District will go ahead and recieve the Army Reserve Bldg.?? B&C is already licking their chops on the project costs.
