It would be nice to wait before trying to exploit the horrible tragedy in Tucson, but while TV anchors were getting it wrong on who was dead and who wasn't, the Internet was abuzz over the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona.
Because she had a Tea Party opponent in a spirited race for reelection, the narrative is that virulent opposition to ObamaCare fueled the rage that led a man to shoot 19 people including Ms. Giffords.
I don't know what happened but to use this as a metaphor for the health care debate is wrong.
There are a lot of people dead and wounded. Let's worry about them....Although that's not what will happen. This crazy and evil rage will inflame the debate I fear.

This crazy evil rage will inflame the debate your so right. Please don't live in fear thats when the devil wins.Things are going to get hairy no doubt this women did not deserve this.Radicals are going to move.Times are realy tough thats what happens when they feal betrayed by government they go nutz. There crazy thoughts take over not good at all.Vengence is owned by God it's not for us to act on this kid may have just bought himself a one way ticket to hell.I will pray for all involved. This is terrible glad she will Live six others lost there lives for what some one having a bad exp. with life.
It's not ObamaCare. It's immigration.
She was a "centerist". Actually, her positions were right of center/pro-business.
If it is being spun to have been a Tea Party related shooting, then that is just plain false and evil.
It came from the left. Not the right.
Just wait and see. That is, if the MSM tells us the truth.
The hateful rhetoric that is the constant refrain for the Palin, Limbaugh, Beck crowd..including Palin's cute portrait of this Congresswoman in the crosshairs has to be considered as contributing to a mood that encourages this behavior.
I don't know what is more stupid, blaming the Tea Party or you, giving this story publicity a few hours after this crime. Jeff, don't you think you should ponder this a bit before you post this drival. We've got the rest of our lives to hear from the Left about how conservatives did this terrible thing. Me, I'm sure it was George Bush.
Mayor, don't even try to downplay that your queen Sarah Palin had circulated a fundraising letter with a gunsight target over THIS very Congresswoman.
We can not turn a blind eye to those who stoke the fires of hate and fear.
Let's just hope we learn from this tragedy.
It is time to pass, with no discussion or thought whatsoever, the Gabrielle Giffords Crazy Tea Bag Nervious Nilly Scapegoat For the Good of All Program. It would effect the entire union, and give authorities power to apprehend the very people who utter verbage that suggests they lack total confidence in our federal government. We good government lovers should not have to live in fear from these fools who do not fully understand our system is beyond questioning. And every one who poses questions is a potential threat to the system we love and trust, the Free Stuff system for people who don't work. These people are crazy, and must be stopped. Anyone who questions our system is a lock on trying to shoot somebody. It's time they were rounded up.
Words are words, and guns are guns. The idea that a campaign flier is a proximate cause to this tragedy is ridiculous.
Objectionable speech deserves more speech. We should not be afraid of words, we should use them. Because that is how it should be done. Our political weapons are words, and the final decider for each battle is the ballot box.
The perpetrator was not a politician, and this was not about a battle of ides. It was a crazy man with an imaginary agenda.
Sadly, it's that simple.
9:52. Blaming Palin for this is not smart. Please rethink whatever it is you are trying to put together in your head. In any society there are crazy people who can commit violence. Unless you want thought police, these things can happen.
Personally, I saw the photo of the alledged killer. He had long hair. Which means he was a pot smoker. Which means pot makes people shoot people. Which means we should upgrade marijuana possession to a 20 year prison sentence. Absurd? No more than blaming Sarah Palin.
It is tragic that anyone gets assassinated by a person with extreme ideas. He solved nothing. The most tragic is that a nine year old child who was interested in her's and our future. I grieve for her and how the horror of her death will impact all children. That is the story for the media.
It's nice to wait...
well why didnt you?
now you have people spouting off on something they have no direct knowledge of.
7:02 I guess you also condone the campaign event that the Congresswoman's tea party opponent held where they used assault weapons to shoot at a dummy target of the Congresswoman. You might think that is ok...I do not. Difference of opinion I guess.
Round people up, and call it Gabrielle's law. There can never be enough laws. For those who love laws. And feel comforted by them.
Too many angry , ignoramuses with bellies bigger than IQ's who want all complexities solved in realty show time limits and who are spurred on by hate mongers in the media.
What a Country !!!
Come on, Mr. Mayor! You state that "It would be nice to wait before trying to exploit this horrible tragedy..." and then you proceed to exploit, without support, that the left is blaming the tea party. The fact is that a congresswoman was targeted for assassination and that in itself makes the crime political. What remains to be determined is where did the shooter get his motivation. Did he decide to act all by himself, or were there others goading him to action? What role did political rhetoric play in the shooter's motivation and justification? We don't know yet. Your other blog on the event was responsible and welcomed. You should not have posted this one when political sensitivities are so high and facts are so scarce.
The Devil is in the details ... The Devil wins when men and woman of good character allow themselves to be silent in the face of injustice. We need to be able to say what's on our mind, without being insulted or made to feel less than by others whose only design is to gain advantage over us and to exploit any perceived weaknesses. We need to give each other reason to trust, in that respect and I think being honest is a good place to start; recognizing no one has a monopoly on truth and I need to have an open mind
MCM
I blame Jefferson:
"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants."
I blame anyone but the guy that pulled the trigger.
But not the liberal system treats the rights of mental illness patience as more important than the rights of the masses to be safe.
Too bad the gunman was not Muslim and then the left would go out of their way to point out this was a minority with extremist views and he does not represent the party he is a member of...not to say that he sounds like a right wing member or teaparty member.
I am tired of the sanctimonious crap from the "middle"(actually left). Some of the policies and ideas of the left are maddening and a serious attack on our country. Anyone that would favor stopping the rhetoric would trade freedom for security and end up with neither.
9:49 Document the case you claim took place. We will wait. What is your source? I'll bet it wasn't the opponent. And I'll be you're lying.
Mikey, you can't mention Christmas, or God, but now you are freely talking about the Devil. What am I to believe about you?
I thinks back in WWII you were a sub captain. You know, one of those guys who zigged and zagged so much they never could get a clean shot off at you.
The hate continues and even after this tragedy The wingnuts of the extremist radio and tv will continue to spew ignorance , intolerance and hatred in the name of freedom > We have really come far as a nation -NOT
Aw shucks, I wasn't spewin', I was just havin a lil fun>):
Not either the time for a little fun , have some respect for the dead and wounded . This insanity of turning political commentary into hatred, inflamatory rhetoric and divisiveness has to stop if the country is to survive .
Our acceptance of each other without rancor and hatred would be a hallmark for the return of sanity to the political spectrum .We need to listen to each other and if we cannot AGREE, AT LEAST BE AGREEABLE IN DEMEANOR AND RESPECTFUL TO EACH OTHER .
I am weary of the raucous disrespectful, downright uncivilized behavior that i see read and observe each day . WE ARE BETTER THAN THAT.
Civic debate, at all levels, has turned into skunk fighting. All of us, all citizens, are sorely in need of civics education. We need to learn and practice an effective way to make our views as citizens known without using inflammatory language and depending on knee jerk reactions.
Voting, and even voting intelligently, is no longer enough. We need to participate more vigorously in whatever rational way we kind find.
SO LET IT BEGIN HERE !!! let's all stop the internet tough guy stuff and stop making snide, mean-spirited nasty remarks about those we disagree with .
Lets see if we ALL have the STONES to do THAT for a change .
I'm betting this suggestion gets ridiculed in the next few hrs
I hate you, 3:23. You're stupid.)^
Just kidding. Actually, I understand what your post meant. Unusual.
This sanctimonious crap from the middle about civility is just plain flaming gay.
Basically preaching honor amongst thieves.
If we are talking about minor issues then fine let it be civil.
But when issues like sanctuary for illegal immigrants who go on to commit child rape are at stake then you are god damn right it is going to be vitriol.
Every day we hear about Wall Street verses Main Street. We hear about tax breaks for the wealthy when the tax rate is over 5o% counting state taxes and self employment taxes. We hear that the estate tax is a break when it is 36% instead of 55%. This is all basically preaching hate for the well-to-do.
If you liberals...er I mean centrists, don't have the stomach for it, then by all means don't object to our political ideas and things will be very peaceful indeed.
Ooooh. A guy with some principles. Please take a short break so I can get me some government popcorn. I don't want to miss any of this. Well done 6:15.
I win ! y Many here are simply NOT up to it . America is declining thanks to those attitudes and the inability to compromise and negotiate like rational beings . Your generation is doomed to 3rd world status SOON
Just as i predicted _ You are incapable of behaving like adults who may disagree without being disagreeable ,
As was predicted Some on this board went postal within a few hrs . Our country is at the mercy of these kinds of people and although my time has past and i have lived my life and made my mark on society and contributed to society i fear for the future and YOUR generation, especially my grandchildren .
This attitude displayed DAILY by some here and their total disregard/intolerance for others is a contributing factor to the disintegration of great nation which may well become a third World nation within a few generations unless we pull together soon.
You may well criticize me again for saying this : But the US is Better than that and needs to come together as a nation not remain a community of bigoted naysayers.
