Do you think he is just kidding ? Just saying we are in dire shape fiscally just to get our attention.....Governor Cuomo was in Poughkeepsie yesterday giving Mid-Hudson New Yorkers "The Speech".
The Governor also is not commenting on reports he plans to propose the laying off of up to 15,000 state workers.
While there is outrage in the MSM over layoffs, believe it or not there are many people who look at reports of these cuts and say "good."
These are the people who own or work in small business and whose outlook is not skewed by being married to a teacher. They probably voted for Crazy Carl and don't get quoted in the the news media.
These are people who have gotten used to dealing with the "pain" of doing business in the nation's Tax Mecca.
They are decent, compassionate people who certainly don't wish ill will on anyone, but they have seen their own ranks decimated and can't work up the requisite crocodile tears over an overhaul of state government.
New York's business owners have felt their ears perk up as Andrew Cuomo talks tough...But so far its talk and we will see what the real agenda is in a couple of weeks. Governor Cuomo has asked the state to reserve judgement on his plan until its released.
We should provide him that courtesy.
‘Short-Term Pain’ For ‘Long-Term Gain’

While I can see cutting the gravy away from the State....How can the State add to it's out of work workforce? It seems to defeat something. Not sure what.
Why would the MSM be outraged about cuts to the bloated state work force? Please call Scotty at Channel 7 to find out.
Mayor, we need to look closely at where to cut costs, as in everything is on the table. Start looking under the rug 'No more lies,' and maybe, just maybe you'll find other options to make NYS economically viable, now and in the future besides employing Union busting tactics against the Teachers Union. It a nice easy ploy to blame the Unions for the financial crisis brought on by the private sector.
The NYS Teacher's retirement system acknowledges that in recent years, as the stock market has tumbled that taxpayers-- through municipal contributions-- have had to kick in greater amounts to fund pensions. But they dispute, the Center's longer term predictions. Let’s take a look at competitive bidding processes and force private contractors to stop padding their bids with extended completion dates and bloated overtime fees. It needs to be a situation where no one gets a contract with NYS that can’t show how they can deliver on a contract with the minimum of cost over runs of any kind. The State needs to get out of the Real-Estate holding business. If NYS is holding Real-estate, as they are in NYC not being used, then it’s time to sell it. A few years ago in NYC there was a lot of classroom space not being used by Board of Education, and that was City Management problem, not a Union problem. Sell it to highest bidder, etc.

I don’t know what courtesy we owe Cuomo.
Like Nancy Pelosi…we have to pass it before we know what’s in it?
He is the one that owed you the courtesy of telling us what was in it before you voted for him.
So far he has been hinting and campaigning.
Like a salesman that will not reveal a price until he does his spiel.
At the same time he awards patronage jobs to Dede-n-Darrel he tells us prisons are not there as a jobs program.
I have no doubt we have plenty of criminals to fill our prisons.
Unless we start paroling the Willie Hortons and “non-violent drug offenders”.
Hey why don’t we parole Madoff…he’s not violent?
And where is the best place to have prisons? A place with high unemployment and a high percentage of honest hardworking people that can read and write….the north country!
I have no problem with cutting back prison personnel and cutting back on the higher ups especially. But I am skeptical of closing them without seeing the logic first. Just like there is no logic in dissolving municipalities. Show me the saving???
My wife is a teacher. We don’t need the money but she finds the job rewarding.
It keeps us from going to Florida for the winter and so it keeps me working and spending money here. I don’t think you have the least idea what an administrator does or what a typical day is for them. The teacher unions get blamed but I have yet to see them influence the giant bureaucracy and mandates that are passed.
Right on Jeff, I go to bed wondering how long I keep paying taxes and payroll. I can ever retire and if the risk reward is still worth it. I have seen nothing but higher taxes and fee's and less income. A teacher nevers see's this or a public worker. They only want to do as little for as much as they can get. Simple outlook maybe but that is how it feels from my end.
I see the offender unit in Ogdensburg closing and OCF downsized this year closing next. Governeur and Riverview will share in excess inmates and the hacks will be absorbed elsewhere in the State.
I don;t know that the MSM is "outraged" over the layoffs. Read newspaper editorials and you'll find that even the NYT, about the most liberal daily paper in the state, believes spending must be reduced and pensions reformed. That being said, most news reports don;t point out that much of the projected deficit is due to projected spending increases, though I think that failing is more a result of reporters being lazy and uninformed than it is evidence of bias.
Bring it Close OCF and the SVP in the Burg , eliminate redundant authorities and consolidate school with less than 1000 enrollment K-12.
Mikey, I have to give you credit. As a man who wants to get in on the education gravey train you are certainly saying all the right things. It can only help you during the interview process if you're singing the right song. Who in their right mind can look at this state, tops on lathering money on the education establishment with no accountability attached, then lament the possibility of "union busting tactics"? You should have gotten that new hat when you had the chance. These educators have bilked raises from taxpayers averaging two to three times inflation rates. Despite the bend over reporting of MSM, jobs are not lost. Every year they find a way to hire a few more and initiate yet another program. What is it you wish to teach, Group Think? I'm sure they already have a teacher, a teacher's aide, an administrator, an assistant adminstrator, and a special bus. I'm sure it is equipped with a special set of lights and camera to warn motorists of the investment involved. And if you get the job, don't worry about keeping up your posting schedule. Its not like its a full time job.
11:18 So "you don't see the teacher union influencing the bureaucracy" here in NYS? Hmmm. Do you notice the the influence cold weather has on water in the lake? The water gets where you can walk on it in winter months. As far as your wife teaching and you not needing the money, I can only assume you guys do it for the retirement and the free healthcare that will follow you for the rest of your lives. Or, maybe you just love children.
Well, CrazyRay, I hear you enough on the radio that I can understand you are "not sure what". So I'm gonna 'splain it to ya usin' one of America's Heroes: The Police Officer.
The sole justification for police is this: an extension of the natural right to self-defense.
The police officer exists because a group of people HIRE someone to protect their property & persons for whatever reason. The police officer produces nothing with his labor - wealth destruction. He lives off the wealth created by those who hired him. This is a voluntary arrangement between the parties.
Now, when The State gets involved, and collectivizes the police to meet its own demands (for example, 4 State Police cars w/ 8 Officers set up on the 81 off-ramp to check for "seatbelts") then these officers are excess baggage and need to be cashiered. They are not involved in "the natural right to self-defense" and are drawing salaries - wealth destruction - that can not be afforded. When the police officer becomes a tax collector it is time for the position to be eliminated because he is no longer performing the only legitimate reason for his existence.
The Holy Grail of a gov't job, not matter how useless, is no longer sustainable. Sorry 'bout that. I didn't do it. Uncle Sam did it.
To Anon 3:27 and others Thank You. I was beginning to think I was Crazy. I now know that others are sick of this spending on needless State personal. To Crazy Ray State Jobs hurt the economy They don't help it.
ANON: 6:09
Stop talking at me and say something about what your interested in promoting and what you do for a living. The latest report indicated that the average teacher salary was $47,602. The Federation indicated that unfortunately, teachers are struggling to find housing in their areas that they can afford on their salaries. As more teachers pursue additional education after receiving their bachelor’s degree, their student loan debt increases dramatically. New teachers may not start at an average teacher salary and could therefore struggle even more than veteran teachers, who may have higher salaries. The salary agreements for years were below the rate of inflation --look it up.

8:19 That was a funny joke about the ice.
Other than pay rates and benefits, out of the millions of stupid things going on in our education system, please name one that was pushed through by the teachers union?
We don’t need the money because I earn more in a month than she has earned in her ten year teaching career. I have my own health insurance too.
Yes we both enjoy helping children. We have helped many out and have even taken a few into our home over the years. I have a dog I took in too. It’s a real power trip, you ought'a try it sometime.
Every day I spent in a classroom I thought this is the most important thing I could do for the kids and country. The word is out pals, we can't cut it academically and the world smells blood, and they want to kick our butt. That's why Trump is talking tough about China too; they've got a sweetheart trade deal, highly educated workers and trade advantages with currency undervaluation against the dollar. What a butt kicking their giving us and here's one advantage I didn't even know about. The Chinese Gov. demands a 41-9 percent share of any business we start up there. It's infuriating to me. Why don't we take a percentage of their businesses here and get a percentage of ownership, and use the money for deficit pay downs.
MCM
Well, there be much to talk about. The problem is, I don't have any time tonight.
Glad you liked my ice joke. If you make more in a month than your teacher wife makes in ten years that means you're pulling down a half million dollars a month. That's a good thing. I congratulate you. I question you, but I congratulate you. Methinks you be carried away.
Mikey, before I call you a liar, let me ask you this. Please provide some source for this average salary of yours. As with my first responder who earns $500,000 a month, methinks you be carried away. It is Saturday night and all. And teacher salaries have increased at much higher rates than have the mere average citizen. Most still contribute next to nothing for their health insurance, and keep it forever. Use your head. And speak more of the truth.
And yes Mikey, China is bad. That is why we should do what your Prez takes for granted. We should continue to borrow from them like there is no tomorrow. Have you ever been to China? I have. My only surprise is it took them so long to own us. With vote buying politicians and folks like you who have so little appreciation of what debt is all about it shouldn't have taken this long.
Gotta go.
11:25 you sound stressed out and in a hurry. That cannot be good for your health. Try to slow down and not take things too seriously before you need heart surgery.
My wife started at 32k out of college seven years ago, so yeah there was a lot of rounding in my response. I felt compelled to speak matter of factually, but this is not about me. It doesn't matter if I earn 100k per month or 450k per month. Suffice it to say that her wages are not a significant part of our household income.
Now please answer my question and quit deflecting. Please name some of the stupid things going on in our education system that the teachers union pushed through besides generous wages and benefits.
No no Sir, you make "more in a month than my wife makes in ten years of teaching". We figure it comes to approximately $500,000 a month that you must be bringing down. I congratulate you. It is just this kind of talk that gets people like you in trouble. Live with your own words. And you talk of ME deflecting?
The teacher union is behind the very notion of reasonable contraints on increases in spending. But ok, you wish to hear another aspect. You have already conceded lying about your own family's wages. Now you have placed NYSUT's influence on benefits as undiscussable. On what you base that I have no idea. How about class sizes? Though there is scant evidence that class size has an influence on teacher effectiveness, your wife's union has continued to lobby that hollow issue. How bout standardized testing? You wife's union fights that day in day out. How bout charter school, again the Missus union hates choice. How bout being able to change schools. Your love's union hates that, except for the teachers themselves. Sir, you have proven yourself to be a liar. You attempt to limit discussion on issues you are uncoooomfortable with, and now you are acting stupid. Please tack a different way. While you doing so, enjoy the generous wages and benefits, but sorry, I don't agree to be hush hush about it. I can't even understand how you would either, making $6,000,000 a year as you claim.
It is funny…I mentioned some personal information in order to preempt ad hominem attacks such as yours.
I mentioned my wife is a teacher because it means that I get a lot of first hand information about all the stupid things that go on in school.
I mentioned that we don’t need the money in order to let you know that my opinions are not self-serving.
This all falls on deaf ears and you tell me we must be in it for the retirement and health insurance.
So I quickly do a calculation to put it into perspective for you.
You go on to erroneously guess her yearly salary high by anywhere from
$18k for her first year to $5k for this year.
Although I misestimated I am still factually correct and telling the truth. Since I did not say I earn more each and every month than she has in her ten years. I can easily find several months that I have earned more.
The only reason the conversation should be constrained is because of the original context of my comment about the teacher’s union influence. You know the one you made the funny ice joke about? The context had to do with the duties of a superintendent.
Now you have named off a few things. Standardized testing continues to go on everyday. Are you listing things that they don’t get their way about? If so, I think you misunderstood the question.
I’m sure the union has an opinion on classroom size but again that is routinely overruled.
Charter schools? We were looking for dumb things going on at school that are pushed through by the union, not ways to replace the school.
Changing schools? That sounds a lot like the charter schools. But anyway…when I see turf wars going on…like between general brown and WHS for the new apartments built on the north side, it is the leaders of the schools that are fighting for the students so that they can get aid. I never herd a peep about it from the teachers union.
Please tell me you have more than that. You must be able to come up with something.
You know something…as long as the starting pay for a trooper resource officer is so much higher than the starting pay for a teacher with a masters degree, I am not too concerned about the teacher pay…at least around here. The benefits are off the scale though.
No Sir, you are not factually correct in any way. You said you made "more in a month than your wife made in ten years of teaching". Even if your teacher wife started in the 38k range, by now she would be comfortably over 50k. That means you must make a half millions dollars a month. Or, you lied about it. Or, you once taught math. When you're ready you can tell us which story is true. But please don't run thy mouth about what you state being factually true. It isn't. I'll accept whatever adjusted numbers you wish to submit. Are you telling us you only make $500,000 a month? Or are you a true blue collar guy, pulling down only $300,000 a month? Its your story and in our newfound spirit of non confrontation I'll accept what every adjustment you make. Pardon me if I don't take your numbers too seriously in the future.
Your wifey's teacher union has been intrumental in keeping things as they are. The Standardized tests I speak of test nothing. They are so watered down they allow students to pass HS level courses without being able to read. Thus the reliance on pictograms for cheeseburgers I mentioned previously. Merit pay is another concept districts cannot implement, as your babe's union is only interested in protecting the slugs, and therefore screwing the kids. They are now leading the fight against property tax limits, and their previous successes will likely continue this year. Forcing another generation of taxpayers to deal with the highest taxes in the nation. All with no changes by your overworked wifey. If you don't think the NYSUT folks have a rope tied tightly to Thug Sheldon's special interests you have to be fool. You seem like a smart guy. I know you know better. Your head has just been clouded by wifey. She must tell you all about those thankless and terrible days and how they have to use their own money to buy pencils and put their own gas in the school buses. Friend, like your claims of a $6 million dollar income, most all of that is crap. I know you love her and I'm sure she's a great lady. But those stories are crap. I do wish you the best. Hope we get through this winter. Tonight is no fun. Tell your wife to sleep in. They won't be starting school on time tomorrow. And they'll probably be getting out early too. Daycare will be shortened tomorrow.
I have never earned a total of $5M in any consecutive twelve months.
My wife changed employers after three years and still earns less than $48k
She started at under $38k and got a grand or two raise after she was “permanently” certified, which took two years. (A non-hater might call that merit pay BTW.)
She has averaged (38+48)/2 = $43k for 7 years. That totals $301k
We have to count her year of student teaching for free to get a ten-year career for her.
As well as the two years prior to her degree, of part time substitute teaching at $50/day.
It all adds to less than $3.64M
I am golden, you are grasping.
Did the teachers union push for that Masters requirement I mentioned above? I suspect it would be the SUNY cartel that did that.
You have gone from pretending the union does not allow standardized testing to go on to declaring it exists but is too watered down.
You jump to the fight against property tax limits???
And then on to a rope around Silvers neck???
Please pop a few Ritalin and try to stay focused.
We are looking for specific stupid things that go on in school that were pushed through by the teachers union. If you want to keep it in context then it was about the stupid things superintendents have to do on a day-to-day basis.
But I am sure you don’t want to keep it in context.
The fact is that it is mostly the court system and a liberal agenda that have ruined our schools, with a giant helping hand from special interest such as the engineering lobby and advocates for the special ED students and other “victims” (such as the victims of bullies, most recently). And lets not forget the SUNY empire builder$ that invent all the hoop$ that educational profe$$ionals have to jump through to get that magical certification.
So she wasn't certified. And she was working part time. And she's a sub. Those are details you left out the first time. Conveniently. And Ritalin is what they give grade school students to make your wife's jobe easier. I don't know too many adults who eat it. At schools its more common than chocolate milk. So you are now not the $6 million dollar man, you are the $3.64 million dollar man. If we continue this back and forth I'm sure we will get to the truth soon, my good man. As you say, either way, you're golden. Whatever story you wish to tell is fine with me.
It also sounds like you have a problem with certification. Or more likely, your wife has had problems with certification. That is yet another area where your NYSUT friends have led the charge against reform. Take it up with them. Chances are we agree on alternative avenues to certification. But the education lobby will have none of that. Not with all these people running around with education degrees. We have people with PhD's in physics who can design nuclear power plants but can't teach middle school math because they haven't taken child development classes. Whatever.
As far as Superintendents having to do stupid things every day, so be it. There are more of them than ever before and they make far more then they ever did. The most important skill they have is crying on demand, telling the taxpayers they are suffering and need money while driving around in their Volvos and BMW's. I don't feel sorry for them.
And Sir, don't blame the engineers for piling on bills to school districts. They know where the money is. Lawyers, contractors, food providers, paper clip suppliers, prom dress companies, all focus on schools. They are an unlimited source of bucks.
And you're mad about SUNY too? Remember the old line. If you can't do, teach. If you can't teach, teach teachers. It has never been more true than it is today.
You pay a fortune for an education and here is what they pay you in NYC during first 5 years according to degrees you've earned or credits you've earned without degree. No one is getting rich.
