North Country Congressman Bill Owens says he will not increase security around himself following Saturday's shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson. Mr. Owens says people are put off by a body guard and that he doesn't feel the need in NNY.
Rep. Owens also said Rep Giffords is a friend of his whom I frequently spoke to as both served on the House Armed Service Committee.

As long as there is talk about Doheny making another run...he is very safe.
But I bet Phil Reed could beat him!
Hes as safe in this district as any other. We have our share of radicals also.. More guns here too...Doheny running again is a joke and Owens knows it. Absolutely no threat there even if the fool does run.
Owens/Pelosi should feel safe, as should all Representatives. This was an isolated incident. Then again many will exploit it in an attempt to pass a bunch of laws and go foolish. The sky may be falling. You never know. We gotta do something. BS.
I have been critical of Owens. But I'm going to admit two things tonight. He recognized the foolishness of Carolyn McCarthy's proposed legislation and he has rightfully said that he feels safe in his district, thus declining to go emotional on the latest pablum. Good for Rep Owens.
McCarthy's idea to reinstate the hi-capacity ammo clip/mag provision is not foolish ... what is foolish is having our cops outgunned. The only time a 30-round clip or mag is needed is by a soldier in combat.
You are wrong to measure it otherwise. Owens is a wimp for saying no before he even reads the reinstatement ban proposal. And, for a nice fat NRA PAC check, I surmise?
McCarthy is correct to try and get this reinstated - I would support it.
I dont know you Dan but are you for the second ammendment? Are you against it? Are you for it with restrictions? Are you for it with no restrictions?
I feel safe at night when going to bed because if someone breaks into my house and if I have more than a minute to react he/she aint going to leave other than in a bag.
I do however believe in some restrictions and this would be one of them I guess but that also includes cops.. The military is seperate in issues obviously.
All this on top of this story:
House Speaker John Boehner and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) are against a new gun-control proposal put forth by a fellow GOPer in response to the Tucson shootings.
Rep. Peter King (R-NY), chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, said Tuesday that he'd introduce a new bill that bars anyone from carrying a gun within 1,000 feet of a federal official.
I say, no guns in public anywhere and at anytime, period and especially concealed. All we ever do with "change" is make it worse. Do the math and check the record of mass shootings. It will get worse.

I am a staunch supporter of the 2nd Amendment as well as all of the other 9 in the Bill of Rights, which are the most personal as they belong to the people and can never be taken away.
I'm for reasonable provisions to make sure that only law-abiding citizens own and/or posses firearms... i.e., I support limits on high-capacity clips/mags... the only ones who need 30-round mags are the cops and the military.
All concealed weapons should have extensive background and permit - not like AZ - right to carry and conceal without a permit - that is insane.
Okay?
My understanding of the second ammendment is that it gives me a right ot bear arms.
My understanding of a NYS pistol permit is tht it gives me a right to carry that pistol concealed. Period.
The restrictions to that are in the law.. NYC.
Yet up here in SLC I have a judge who thinks he supercedes NYS law and puts his own restrictions on my right to conceal this weapon.
Legislation that I just read about to make it illegal to have a firearm within so many feet of a federal offical would be impossible to enforce.. Another problem would be is how do you know who the offical would be and they could appraoch you without either of you knowing..
Gun control is like the smoking issue. As long as its making money for the Government it will go on. Those imposing these restrictions are only hipocrites acting on emotions.
Smaller towns should go to their city officals and make laws to force people without weapons to buy them and carry them in their town.. Same mentality
Sounds like a solution that just needs to look for a problem. When we start having a significant number of cases where the police are outgunned or a significant number of public officials being shot at, then we can address it at that time.
But what we could address is the incompetence of the sheriff and LE in AZ or else the lack of laws involving mental illness.
I seem to remember a volunteer paramedic getting gunned down in our own backyard recently. The gunman had a former address in a town well known as the location of a mental hospital. If I were a betting man...
in fact can anyone tell us how many of the important crimes out there are committed by the same group of mentally disturbed individuals? We sent out own down to Rochester to murder prostitutes as i recall.
