One of the rituals of the final week of the year is musing about the top local stories of the year gone by.
Some come to mind quickly, like the elections and the related stories about toppled incumbents and outrageous spending.
There is the Cuomo juggernaut and the Paladino meltdown.
Dysfunction and deficits plagued the State Capital.
Mercy Healthcare finally careened out of control and has been forced on a path to closure.
The economy bucking the national trend with surging retail and unemployment at or below the national average...
I am sure there are some fires, crimes and trials of note.....
Take a turn at naming the top local stories. Submit your comments and we will post them.

The Paladino "meltdown", as you describe it, was nothing of the sort. That was simply the media and special interests doing their job bowing and swallowing to the next party designee. Last act was Spitzer, next act will be Schneiderman. There can be no change on the statewide stage.
The biggest story of the year, somewhat locally, is the reelection of Owens/Pelosi. The fact that he can give us her healthcare program, then be reelected in NNY, says much about where we are and where we have traveled. Free Stuff has become the basis for life. And we care not about ability to pay for our wants. We're entitled. I believe we have turned the corner on this and there is no going back. Congratulations to the people who want stuff, and good luck to the people who will attempt to pay the bill.
Dede Scozzafava is still the biggest story around these parts ...hands down!
The death of Firefighter Garrett Lommis in the silo explosion at our farm and the way the whole North Country Community came together to honor him at his funeral. In response to this tragedy a foundation has been created to provide training for agricultural related emergencies. The NNY Community Foundation Manages the fund.
How about the story of the County Judge reclusing himself from a high profile case and then the leniant sentence given out.
How about Covidien and Northland Electric closing, next month Covidien (Faichney's) will close the doors after being open for over 120 yrs. PJ Simao is always a good story
The biggest story of 2010 was 'Matt Doheny’ fails to win election against Bill Owens. In the year of the Republican to quote some bloggers around here, Matt spent a ton of money, campaigned hard and lost. How does that translate into him running and winning in 2012, which is looking like a Democratic year? S'plain it to me Republican bloggers. Forget about trying to play the re-districting alignment card. Redistricting won’t happen here in a way that helps Mr. Doheny.
