Sheriff Retires...Then Takes Office Again January First

Somehow all of the bloviating about pension reform rings shallow when you hear the story on YNN this morning that newly relected Onondaga County Sheriff Kevin Walsh has submitted retirement papers and will take the office anew on January 1st....Pension plus salary !
It's all probably legal and I know that's the system we play under.....I think people should be able to retire with some degree of security, but really....Is this right ? Can we afford to keep doing this?
The answer is no....Enjoy your retirement Sheriff....along with Pedro Espada who also filed his retirement papers this week.
Time for a defined contribution system for new hires.....
The Sheriff tells YNN's Bill Carey, "this is common practice in law enforcment."
Indeed it is....Our new lieutenant governor is drawing a large pension from being a Rochester city cop and has another retirement in the offing as mayor and LG.
No wonder so many retirees love New York.

I never held much hope for Cuomo...but you always seemed to be saying you did/do.
So lets get him in the drivers seat before we criticize the lack of change. I mean....did you expect the lame duck leaders to fix the pension problem in their last few months in office?

state pensions are exempt from state taxes too.

Goes to my belief that elected officials should not be allowed in the state pension system. Wouldn't have to worry- he could fund his 401k like any other independent contractor!

This happened locally, A former elected official delayed his pension, then became head of a Public Benefit Corp. when he retires his pension will be triple of what it was, same with a former Chief of Police for Lake Flacid.

I don't see Cuomo's name mentioned in Jeff's statement. Aren't you a little thin skinned, Mr 12:10? You're defending StatusCuomo when he wasn't even blamed.

I don't know about that...
I started out by saying I was not a fan of Cuomo's.
I was not so much sticking up for Cuomo as I was sticking up for the lack of change as of yet.
You are correct that Jeff did not mention Cuomo...but who was doing the bloviating about pension reform that Jeff referred to? Cuomo is the guy that is supposed to do the reforming in this state...so I just assumed.

most employees only pay 10 percent of their health insurence benefits also, so those who have none pay 90 percent of the employees. does anyone know what state employees contribute to their health insurence. In the small towns of Jeff. County, town employees usually have the best jobs in the town, and no one has the guts to change that

I don't think anyone blames Cuomo, yet. Anyone who does is being unfair. But if you look at folks like Thug Sheldon, you can assign all kinds of blame. And yet we elect dirt like that time after time. I don't have anything against Cuomo, but there's no way he has the power to unseat the criminals who run the Empire State. Not when NYC continues its tradition of uncontested elections. The City is a machine, run by illegal aliens, union bosses, criminals and voters who have never known anything different. Enjoy. And happy X-Mas.
