Will Cuomo address lawmakers on Monday? - Capitol Confidential

With Governor Paterson pretty much on the dustbin of history, Governor-elect Andrew Cuomo may as well go to the Capitol on Monday and speak to lawmakers gathered for party caucuses.
Mr. Cuomo needs to set the tone early and his inaugural would be waiting too late, since budget proposals are due shortly after the swearing in. Legislators have to be told what's expected of them, as if real cuts are to happen, it will be a first for many of these people.
I think the budget will be full of one shot wonders like wine in grocery stores license fees, since there is a pledge of no new taxes. A casino deal in the Catskills will likely be front loaded with cash and who knows what other schemes will be devised.
Whatever it is, the new governor needs to take charge and he may choose to do so Monday in Albany. Let's hope so.

But aren't the layoffs happening 12/31.?

I believe Paterson has already done a lot to help Cuomo. He has continued to pust for needed changes. He could have just laid down and stopped working. The teachers, government employees and feel good status cuo types hate Paterson. That means he's doing a lot of things right.

I want to get a little off this subject and refer to article in Ogd journal today about contract talks in SLC.. About two weeks ago I posted a fact about SLC legislator Forsythe.. Someone kept trying to defend him (probably him) about his voting and stabbing the unions in the back.. This person wanted proof and kept asking for proof.. Todays headline story covered the truth when Forsythe agreed to to take this back to the full board for approval. He claims he thought he had to vote for this because he had missed so many meetings so when he found out he changed his vote tono.. A very weak claim.. Previously his claim was the County Administrator told him to.. He forgot the legislators tell the administrator what to do not her tell them.. My point was he lost his bid for the 118th because of actions like this. People never knew how to take him and didnt trust him as he seemed to be there only for self serving interests.. Anyway justice prevailed and Ms. Russell won handily.

Well if Gov Paterson had stood up to the powerful liquor lobby and insisted that food stores that already sell beer be allowed to sell wine too layoffs would not have been necessary.

The initial and annual revenue wine sales would have given the State - and the income it would have given wineries to help their local rural economies would have benefited all taxpayers. So call your state reps now and tell them you want food stores to also sell wine. Not one liquor store will go out of business simply because consumers will have choice.

Who wants to stop layoffs of state employees? Not me!

How do you know that liquor stores will not go out of business? I am sure that many would. And when they do it will rob us of the additional liquor taxes. Or do you want wegmans and superwalmart to sell liquor too?

Carol it is small business that create jobs and stimulates the economy. If the Democrats that controlled the Senate, Assembly, and Governor did their jobs they would not be going to Albany for a special session. Which will cost the tax payers 100s of thousands of dollars to gavel in and gavel out.

The budget never balanced and Gov. Paterson is a lame duck. If Andy wants layoff Paterson will do it. Probably part of the "Paterson will not be prosecuted" deal.

State government needs cuts, but they should start on the 700 plus public authorities first.

People who post "Anonymous" are hiding; why?

There is not one shred of evidence that any liquor store will close; liquor stores thrive in states where wine is sold in both liquor and food stores.

In fact the local producers of artisan products would be pounding at the doors of the NY liquor stores to sell their local NY products if those stores could get rid of foreign, big box wines (to the supermarkets) to open space to local products.

Yes, Oburg, small business creates jobs and stimulates the economy. So how many thousands of mom and pop tourist supported businesses will close when NY wineries close because only a few hundred liquor stores in NYS carry any NY wine and consequently those rural wineries can't sell enough wine at the winery in the summer/fall to support their family?

The small-business NY rural economy will look like the old Rte 66 if wine can't be sold in the thousands of food stores that already sell beer. And many of those family-owned food stores need the mark-up wine will give them to compete with the superwalmarts.

I wonder if laid off state workers can do business with these small businesses.
Laying off people, private or government, will hurt business. Business needs customers.

You don't like people who post anonymously? The whole damn site posts anonymously. Use your head, 10:23.

I post comments here anonymously to decrease the occurrences of ad hominom arguments…
and to keep crazy people from stalking me.
Isn’t that obvious? Why object? The only reasons I can think of to object are the two reasons I am anonymous.

That being said…11:09 and 10:19 must be the same person because no two people could be that freaken’ stupid.

To argue that we should not have state layoffs because it would hurt the small businessman in the form of lost customers? With that logic we should maybe expand state employment? Are you Nancy Pelosi by chance?

Or is it dumber to say that there is not a shred of evidence that liquor stores would go out of business when grocers are allowed to sell wine?
It is self-evident and noetic. That when an oligopoly is expanded or lost, so too are some profits. And with lost profits comes lost businesses.

If there is no evidence that satisfies you it is because you have looked for no evidence.

It is unlikely that grocery store sales would be incremental sales. Instead they would be stolen sales. Which slows traffic at the mom and pops and therefore slows the remaining categories.

But if wines sales went up over all it could also be at the expense of beer sales. That means our public would be drinking higher proof adult beverages on average. That is something else that is not desirable.

I post anonymously because I hate everybody, and everybody hates me. The other reason is I don't want to be placed in some Christmas list grab bag where I gotta buy a gift for some idiot I don't know. Suppose I got thrown into the Jeff Blog Hat and I drew Mikey's or Dan Francis's name. I ain't buying for some subversive Commie type who won't dream in red, white, and blue. I mean, what can you buy a Donkey that they don't have anyway. They get all their stuff for Free. Nope, I'm staying anonymous.

You could get them a free ride...they love free rides.
Or some psychotropic drugs so they don't obsess about what rich people have.
You could get them a sense of self worth but they would have to give up being a democrat to accept that gift.

Oh I know...you could get them a Monopoly game and type up new rules for it where all the players split the rent and instead of going to jail they get to walk. and when they land on your house instead of them paying, the government pays. I am sure everyone would try just as hard to win...but no one would win and it would be utopia.
