Paladino Wins the West, but the Rest of the "Free Sh-- " Crowd Votes Cuomo

Despite the overwhelming win by Andrew Cuomo, not all New Yorkers reject Carl Paladino......While only 11% of Manhattan elites voted for the man their local media dubbed "crazy Carl", Mr. Paladino's margins in western NY counties ranged as high as 68% in Wyoming and 65% in Niagara County. Even normally Democratic Erie County voted 58% Paladino. For a guy who was panned by the chattering class, his numbers in Bills Country were astounding.
Western NY is the part of the state where Perot did best and there is a strong independent streak there.
What the vote shows is more than just affinity for the hometown ticket. There is a split in NY between those content with the status quo and those who resent even the reform agenda Mr. Cuomo purports to advance.
As one local candidate who didn't win told me, politics and winning is all about "free s---." People want stuff from government and that largely is how you win. 94% of incumbents were reelected in NY this year.
To suggest the bulk of New Yorkers have changed is to misread the results.

"Free stuff"/ Unlike the Mayor that begs money for Mercy or uses taxpayer money to build decks on private property. Hypocrite!
Go hang out with the Madame.

Grow up. Most people would consider Mercy's service as a core service.

The deck is just fighting or accepting our fair share. It is not the same thing as sanctioning the system. It is being pragmatic and playing by the rules as they now exist. Not hypocritical in the least.

We voted for Carl because we are racist homophobic teabaggers. It had nothing to do with Andrew's failure to promise to cut spending or reign in public employee wages and benefits to levels in the private sector.

Maybe if you had supported him Mr. Mayor, he might have done well in Jefferson County.

He should have visited Fort Pearl to discuss it.

Only 94% were reelected? I thought it was usually 98%. sounds like the turnover rate has quadrapled. Dont expect it to last, though.

In NY, it will last until all state checks are bouncing. Which will be sooner than you think. But it looks like the voters don't want to change anything until their noses are rubbed in it. Which won't be long either.

N.Y. isn't known as the Welfare State for nothing. Once 51% of the voters realize they can vote themselves a living at someone else's expense and labor, it become a very long (generations long) and very difficult process to wean the welfare types back off and get em working again. Look at what has happened to Europe. Thomas Jefferson, I believe, wanted to restrict voting rights to property owners on the premise that only those who have to pay for it should have a say in how their money is spent. Time has proven the wisdom of his thoughts.

7:01,
So you're saying that people who receive welfare dont own property? Really?

Anonymous said...

7:01 is exactly right. So many NYers now see the government as their source of making a living. Grants, kickbacks, salaries, Free Stuff no matter how you look at it, now comes from the labors of others. How can any of these people be expected to vote against that? We're in it for ourselves, and will make sacrifices for no one, not even our own kids. What he's saying, 8:50, is too many people have a vested interest in things just remaining as they are. Financial independence is not in their best interests. It's not just the less fortunate. If you run a company, you better find a way to get the Government to pay your bills, or you're not going to make it. Bum and fatcats all like this system as it is. Free Stuff is for everyone. As 7:01 says, once so many people realize their vote has been purchased, there is not reason to seek change.

Well, spin it all you want Mayor, the Wall Street crowd and the George W bandits headed by Hank Paulson, walked out the door and told President Obama, 'GOOD LUCK FELLA' after nearly scamming America out out its present and future economic viability. They left a poison pill from Goldman Sachs in Timothy Gietner, and still they couldn't sabotage us to the extent that Pres. Obama gave up! We haven't fallen into a depression, no thanks to the Republicans, and the 'Wall Street Crowd' and all those media spin artists who want to pin it on the people who didn't do it, "THE DEMOCRATS!!!"

The American people are going to see and reward Pres Obama and Democratic Party for keeping this country going. Republicans are going to be wiped out in 2012.

The movie about Obama should be called, "Against All The Odds", but I think the titles been used already.
