With a respectable period of mourning having elapsed since the election, its time to rally behind our new State Senator-elect Patty Ritchie.
She defeated Senator Darrel Aubertine in a close race, and her victory likely means a GOP majority in the Senate...Thats a good thing as it may prevent a crazy redistricting plan based solely on creating a century of Democratic hegemony in NY.
Ms. Ritchie proved herself a strong willed person in the rigorous campaign, and like her vanquished foe, can lay claim to being "one of us."
This nonsense about "she's no Doug Barclay" is for the birds. Ms. Ritchie is capable of hard work and common sense, as was shown in her running of the County Clerks Office.
With the last of the absentees being counted, its time to accept the verdict of the people and advance the interests of the North Country with the help of her representation.
Best Wishes Patty !

Has Darryl concided yet?????
That doesn't mean anything...The race is over.
we've obviously forgotten the century of Republican hegemony in upstate NY now, haven't we?
Upstate wil probably have three Democratic state senators next year- none of whom won with more than 54% of the vote- and over 20 Republican senators.
Do we really want to be consumed by NYC? Think about it.
No we'll now be CONTROLLED by LAWNGUYLAND, not the BIG Apple -- so the SONG Remains the SAME either way --its DOWNSTATERS - GET used to it
We might lose a prison, but at least our license plates will always be safe. lol
wow, will you have more class than the Republican machine that has done nothing but poke and prod and name call against Darrel for 3 years now?
And yes, conceding means nothing.
It's too bad about Darrel, who seemed like a reasonable candidate. I think the vote on Gay marriage hurt him, as did his unethical dealings with the wind companies...
As an "Albany insider" who will work closely with the Republican majority next session I can not believe Aubertine was not re elected. I guess I'm not too familiar with the 48th and his work within the district, but he was without a doubt the most popular and well liked Senator in the Capitol who had a knack for passing bipartisan legislation despite being a marginal. Its nice to get a republican majority but a damn shame we had to do it at the expense of the 48th and a very good senator. JC
You could tell Darrel had become part of the system. He had no clue were his campaign was going or who was running it. He figured the more money, more signs, more protestors, more lies about his opponent, banners of himself outside voting areas, and spreading the pork would be all he needed to win the 48th. Just goes to show you, we are not like NYC and if was from NYC he would of won.
Long Island or NYC? NYC legislators are extremely liberal with social programs, gun control, releasing inmates back to our streets which does not reflect the values of NNY. There are down falls by the LI crew but not as extreme.
Darrel lost his way when he tried to nose dive BFW down the throat of his hometown for his own benefit. Then hired his sister 2 weeks after he voted to pass the ethics bill.
The next two years will tell the outcome of this story. Two years from now, we will be back on the blogs. Good luck Senator Ritchie.

Darrel had it coming...he voted to have NYC lead the State Senate. The 48th Senate district has nothing to do with NYC other than generating all their power and supplying their food, but our issues aren't their issues.
Long Island at least understands that the only reason they are in the Majority is because of Upstate and they have to give us a fair shake.
We're in better shape politically with Patty and the Republicans in control of the State Senate.
Oburg has some good insight but let's not forget DA also vote to move inmate population to NYC. This undermines NNY representation and gives more representation to NYC.
Why would he do this? We have to put up with the stigma of prisons and parolees families moving into our towns and cities. This made no sense.
Patty will be will make a difference. Darrel was making a difference for himself. Two more years DA would of made it into the NYS retirement system.
either way we in NNY are not being prioritized.
The Lawnguyland leadership bloc will take care of their SPECIAL interests and NNY will be a pawn in the process

Patty Ritchie will not and can not vote in lock step with the Long Island delegation that got her elected. She promised to restore the STAR rebates and she campaigned to roll back last year's tax increases; including the sin taxes. As a smoker, that was the reason I voted for her. Since the Republicans (Senate and Governor) raised our property taxes and fees throughout 90's and 2000's she would have to vote against them as they continue their business as usual. Lets hold Ritchie to her campaign promises and support her as she votes against her Long Island and NYC campaign donors.
Poly...nice try..Darrel was a county legislator before he was elected to the Assembly.I am sure he has enough years to be vested. Your concern however is appreciated.
what is going on i read a statement this morning that darrel had conceded and you have taken it off already. it must kill you to show any respect to our new senator since you have shown so little through this whole campaign she showed you what she is made of and certainly without your help.
