Dead Animal Show and Tell....

Everybody likes to show off a new car or a spiffy new outfit.....But dead animals ?
Ubetcha ! This is the time of the year for Dead Animal Show and Tell.
Moments ago I got a text photo from a former city councilman showing me the deer he just killed.....There is a special section on http://www.newzjunky.com/deer.htm touting the deer of the day as locals squat down to hoist the antlers as the animal's tongue hangs longingly from a blood stained mouth.
When I was at Caprara's a Saturday in the fall wasn't complete unless a pick-up pulled in and all the guys gathered around to coo over the carcas sprawled in the back.
With new technology, that still warm animal can go global in seconds.
It's a ritual that tugs at our base emotions....our desire to hunt and forage and be the provider...and to get credit for the kill.
I wonder if Junky will soon have a crow of the day feature for current councilmen to submit photos to.

Every year I buy a Sportsman's License, which allows me to shoot most everything but a antlerless Democrat. Every year, I don't use it. I just don't feel like shooting a deer, or anything else. So I keep in practice with target shooting. But it is the last, the very last area of NYS expenditures that I feel good about putting money into. And I support the people who hunt. It is a necessary part of conservation. The most environmentally aware people I know are hunters. Maybe if I went out with someone who knew what they were doing it would catch on with me. I'll probably do that before I'm too old.

A few short years ago there was a dead deer on Thompson St in the city, Sacred Heart was afraid the students would be tramatized over this, Nice to know it's going to the MSM in the area. This type of thing belongs in hunting magazines.

Ya I can understand were you are comeing from!! Lets worry about pictures of people who are proud of something they have done. And sign onto NEWZJUNKY everyday to try to catch a look at pictures of the big car crash were local people were killed. SIMPLE FIX: Don't click on that section ! !!!! !!!! !!!! !!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!! !!!!!!! !!!!

Anonymous said...

All's I will say on the matter if you don't like to see don't look at it. The only way you can see the pictures is to click on the link. So part of you must really want to see it. Hunting is a legal sport in the state of NY and it helps control the deer population. Plus there are some families who need hunting season to put meat and food in their freezer. You have a right to complain but if you don't like it don't look!!!

Anonymous said...

DONT CLICK THE LINK IF YOU DONT WANT TO SEE THE DEAD DEER. SALLY

One of the problems in this country is that we as humans are so modernized, we tend to forget where our food comes from. We take just about everything for granted. The bottom line is your local butcher doesn't hatch the meat that you eat, and if you are a vegetarian than your just completely going against mother nature, because humans whether you wan't to believe it or not are predators and need a balanced diet, that includes meat. All predators have eyes in the front of thier heads and prey have them on the sides. Hunting is a human right, although for the most part most of us don't rely on it for sustanance anymore, it is our primal instinct that brings us to the woods. The game that you take is not only very satisfying and enjoyable, but it is also hard work, and much healthier to eat than any store bought meat. So to all the nay sayers, I say if you don't like it too bad, because personally I don't like people trying to impose on my way of life, and my families God given American traditions and rights. Next time your on Newsjunky skip the deer pics if you don't like them!

@ Irish,
I love all of God's furry creatures big and small, ecspecially with butter and garlic! Honor your game, eat it! No really Irish, just eat it! Any person who rejoices the death of another human being because that person is providing for him/herself and their family, needs to seek psychiatric help!

Just look at all those super honed physiques of Sparta. Those gladiators were vegetarian. Morons the lots of you and i am with Eirann all the way on this...

I notice all the dumb stuff comes from the anti's. That's the same thing with gun control. Stupidity is pretty well defined these days. You don't have to partake, but understand huntings proper place.

Hey 7:59 You can get as much protein as you need from other sources than meat, In fact eat a steady diet or rabbit you will perish, not enough protein, plenty of oldtimers found out the hard way. Wake up.

"Spartans were vegetarian"? Where did you get THAT! Spartan warriors were trained to live like coyotes if necessary...(Indian word for vegetarian is "bad hunter"-(joke) Good hunting pix shows the animal clean and no tongue hanging out. One more way to honor the fallen animal. I lke "Deer Of The Day"...Don't click here if you don't like hunting pix! Considerate hunters should take the time to set up a good photograph...you took the time to set up a good hunt. :0)

Lawfully hunting practices is the only reason we still have places like the Adirondack Park and other protected areas. Without the extinct apex predators (wolves & catamount) in NYS, hunting is absolutely necessary to regulate the artificial balance of prey. I only wish the mayor pointed out the hunters with licenses, following all the DEC rules are the real good guys. These good hunters insure that there will be animals to hunt next year. Poachers are criminals same as thieves and molesters and should be heavily fined and/or imprisoned, for ruining the sport.

Peggy Summerson said...

My husband and I both hunt. We took the training and pay for the priviledge. When we shoot a deer we showed it off, of course. We are pround that we were able to get a good kill shot, not shoot, wound and don't go after. If anti-hunters don't like it that is fine, keep your comments to yourself. It is people like them that have thrown the natural balance of nature off and animals are starving to death because the population is too large for the food supply. That must be their way of thinking it is humane(?)

Anonymous said...

Mr. Graham has blogged his "view" in the true style of a politician. Did any of you actually READ what he had said? There was really no opinion given. An open ended statement that boils down to saying People shoot deer and show their trophy off to other people. News Junky now has a deer of the day. (which by the way in the summer you can see DEAD FISH *gasp* on "Catch of the Day") Mr. Graham layed a blanket statement never stating he was either PRO or ANTI hunting. Ha ha ha... you all got your panties in a bunch for nothing. Try stressing about some real problems in the world!

The ones that are complaining about hunting and posting pictures etc., where do you think the meat in the supermarket comes from, the good fairy?

Middle-Class Mike said...

Mayor why don't we have an organized paint ball shoot-out in the woods. Three sides, Dems, Reps and Inds and the last side standing gets to eat dinner and have a beer on the other guys. I know no Reps are gonna out hunt or fight the Dems, the Inds are the only wild card. PS "No live ammo jokes please.

I wouldn't say the tongue hangs longingly. Maybe the tongue hangs in surrender or relentingly or in defeat or something like that.

The mayor never advocated for ending this gruesome celebration nor did he besmirch those who participate. He merely reported on the activity and the humane nature instincts that cause him to struggle with it. He did not imply that you should have to feel his emotions on the subject either.

It would seem a little less barbaric, if you photographed your quarry for showing it off, without first reaching into the mouth and pulling the tongue out for display.

Hey 9:11 I haven't seen to many starving deer in the North Country.

ADK JO said...

I grew up with this ritual and married into it. I am a native Adirondacker and this seems really normal to me. If this practice bothers your sensibilities, don't click on the link. It isn't like Watertown is a sophisticated metropolis that is above the traditions of the rest of the North Country! Hunting is a sport as well as a way to prevent the deer from dying due to overpopulation and starvation. Besides, venison is better for us than beef and lots of folks hunt for the sake of putting meat in their freezers.

Anonymous said...

Good for you 3:06
But before you are going to tell me what to do you might want to suck on the end of your gun. If anything bothers my sensibilities I will reserve my right to comment on it.

Where is the study showing game taken in hunt is better for you than beef? Since half of it is processed into Slim Jims or mixed with some other animal fat in order to make it tolerable to eat, it ain't better for ya.

Just because most of us kill or cause animals to be killed so that we might eat them does not mean it is cool to take a picture with the tongue hanging out. Maybe OJ was right when he said, "this is where my babies come from" as he grabbed Nicole's crotch? Because after all it was just the natural truth?

Anonymous said...

Somebody put a bullet in this discussion! The comments are getting more and more STUPID! HAHAHA! "Reaching in the mouth to pull the tongue out for the sake of a picture? Tongue hanging longingly!?!"...Good grief! How about "The tongue hanging out because, "These pretzels are making me thirsty!"

Hello 3:57
For your edification, I am posting an exerpt from an article on the internet regarding the comparison between venison and beef:

Red Meat
•Although venison and beef both are considered red meats, venison contains less fat and cholesterol than most cuts of beef. The differences are, in part, because venison generally comes from animals that aren't farm-raised and fed, while beef cattle are fed grains that bulk them up.

I included the link in case you wanted to read some more. As far as the rest of your post is concerned, I prefer not to comment.

That is a very interesting post, 7:15. What it means, I have no idea. When I hear from people like you, I wonder what stage of life you are in, and how you got to this point. Whatever you are, know this. It is never too late to turn your life around and stand for something that matters. That is what your folks would want, meaning your mom and dad. Do your best to pull out of this. Life can be a great opportunity. Don't pass it up with all this hatred.

Kids who hunt fish n trap don't mug little old ladies. Maybe you simple minded lazy city slick f***s should get off the lazyboy for a day and take your kids, nieces or nephews out into the wilderness and show them the great, priceless things in life. Anyone can sit behind your dirty, boring, gay bar and drink n gamble. Get ur ass up before the sun does, and go try to shoot yourself a world class whitetail deer like some of those you see on deer of the day.

9:03 You are making yourself look stupid. And 8:56, realize that what you say reflects on all of us who enjoy shooting and hunting. Don't be a fool. Being dumb just plays into the anti's hands. Don't be so defensive you act like an idiot.

At least a deer in the woods has a fighting chance...Take a good look at the packages of veal in the supermarket, maybe pickup a rotisserie chicken or some hamburgers. C'mon people, give it a rest, deerhunters have to work for it and as long as it ends up on a family's dinner table I have no problem with it. It wasn't so long ago that your forefathers took old Bessie out behind the barn and either shot or slit her throat or even hit her over the head with a hammer then slit her throat to put meet on the table. For the most part deer hunting is far more humane than what happens even in a modern day processing plant.

Anonymous said...

I would rather the deer be hunted then get over populated and have car/deer accidents ten times worse then what we do now......

Cletus got a puter...who knew? Wonder if he powers it from one of those outhouse wood burning boilers?

There is no way Graham is gay. He's not left handed. His haircut is not that good. His clothes are not especially trendy. He likes sports. He doesn't dance. No lisp and a relatively deep voice. And the biggest clue is he doesn't hunt! (maybe you just wish he was gay?)

For those that say if you don't like it don't click on it...If you don't like Grahams blog don't click on it.

~signed: a hunter that does not pull the tongue out before he takes the picture. Plus hangs it in the barn instead of the front yard.

This is for everyone who is an american. You have a choice of what you do and what you dont do. Everybodys cultures in this country are different and peoples opinions are like assholes everyone has one. Some people choose to hunt and some do not, it is your choice. A person should not be singled out because he/she decides to hunt or not. I personally am a hunter and have shot many deer and it not only puts food on my families table, but it also saves me money in groceries, and today in the economy, people need to look at where they can save money, for those that dont hunt or dont like it, thats fine its your choice, but im sure there are things in your life people are not comfortable with either, and i dont see us bashing you for the choices you make in your life

Anonymous said...

Cletus you hunt because it is fun. Meat is cheaper in the grocery store store.
By he time you pay for your gun, bullets, gas, license, tree stand, and gargle with deer urin, 4 wheeler, fanny warmer, Kevlar underwear, hunting camp dues and extra Milwaukee best, you have not saved a penny over the 29 cents a pound turkey that will be on special this month.

Graham shouldn't be worried about the deer hunting because the only reason he can drive down the road in his car taxpayers bought without hitting a deer, is with the deer hunters management of the deer population.

Venison is served at a lot of community Kitchens in places like Norwalk, or Standord Connecticut, etc. on around Thanksgiving or Christmas, etc. The hunters make it available to people who need a good meal. Sadly, a lot of people need a good meal and they feed hundreds of people each event.

Yes Mikey. Lots of people eat venison at commuuuunity kitchens. Lots more now that your Great One has watched unemployment rise to record levels.

Did you get that teaching job handed to you yet?

Seriously right now?? I'm pretty sure I didn't read any comments when there was "catch of the day" So, why all the fuss? I personally enjoy hunting which none of you probably care about, and thats fine too...but lets really think about this..some of you are bitching about those killing deer...what about the drug dealers, and the sick mo fo's that love to touch little kids, or the ones who are thinking of burning your house down? I bet they probably live right next to you..now whatcha thinking about? I bet that deer that was shot is the furthest thing from your mind right about now!! There always seems to be some ignorant asshole out there that wants to ruin the few things that we Americans ENJOY!! So to all you people who have nothing better to do but bitch, go back to your "Betty Crocker" cook books and remember everytime your making dinner, or eating out.. think about how that meat got on your plate, cause I'll promise you it didn't die of "natural causes" And for all the hunters lets go "LOCKED COCKED AND READY TO ROCK"
Keep posting....

Mikey, you seem ok to me. But with your group think mentality I wouldn't want you around kids. You see things through Donkey colored glasses. I don't need onesided propagandists preaching to the kids. They deserve better. They get enough of that already. They don't need another puppet making speeches to them.

I'm glad you are offended. That was my intent. I do not want propagandists in front of children. I have no problem with you here, as we are all adults and we share all points of view. But to allow you access to a controlled group of children would be a continuation of the damaging system we have already inflicted on our kids. We have allowed too many of your ilk unchallenged access to our classrooms. Our children need to be taught to think, not to conform to fools. And Sir, I don't much worry how I "come across", as you say. I concern myself with giving respect where it is deserved. Party line thinkers such as yourself deserve no respect, in my view. I have no problem stating that. This nation is in deep trouble because of people like you, on both sides of the political spectrum.
It is interesting that how you "come across" is such an important aspect to you. To me, it means your a fake. It also means you might have a great future as a politician. Again, I hope you fail in your efforts to obtain a teaching job.
