Charges of Bias Against Dicker Go Back to 2003 Divorce Coverage

Carl Paladino charged this week that veteran NY Post state editor Fred Dicker is a stalking horse and stooge for the candidacy of Andrew Cuomo. Mr. Paladino's charge came a mere week after he had declared to the NYDN that the Post is his favorite paper.
Team Paladino has squawked at the many questions about Paladino's affair that led to the birth of his ten year old daughter, while few personal questions are directed at Mr. Cuomo.
The Post and Mr. Dicker did cover the divorce of Mr. Cuomo and ex wife Kerry Kennedy in 2003 and portrayed the tale at the time as one of Ms. Kennedy cheating with a polo player and leaving her husband crushed.
That seeming taking of sides in the coverage seems to be at the heart of the assertion that Mr. Dicker is predisposed to favor Mr. Cuomo in his coverage.
I think the interest in the Paladino affair is that he is the new flavor of the month and that Andy's divorce is old news already gnawed on. But you can judge whether there is a long standing predisposition to Andy.

Regardless if there is bias in this coverage or not (and I think there is), Dicker is a very biased reporter.

So where is the bias in the article posted from 2003? Cuomo was devastated, his young children were 5 and 8, their lives turned upside down and he acted like any betrayed person would. He was hurt, why is that so hard to comprehend? We hold public people to a different standard, but they face the same day to day problems as we each do except under public examination. If Cuomo was the guy from your office and his wife was cheating, do you really think he would brush it off and say, its nothing? He'd make comments all over the office, the difference is Cuomo has the media asking for statements and comments.

Beyond the personal feelings of betrayal this affair apparently was going on when he was stumping for the 2002 campaign making it much more visible than it would have been otherwise for Cuomo personally. And we don't know what other realities of the affair came to light for Cuomo as he began to put the complete picture together, excuses that were made, stories told and possibly the care of his girls while his wife was playing with her polo pony.

You want some reporter to accuse Cuomo of being the catalyst for his's wifes cheating. That's why you're saying the story is biased. The reporter told the story here, if anything it makes Cuomo more human. Like Everyman, a marriage is two people, but the decision to cheat is made by one. No matter how emotionally bankrupt, neglected or hurt the party is, there are ways to change the situation. In this case, Kennedy had the means to get a divorce before jumping on the pony, she chose to betray her husband and her kids. For whatever the reason for her actions, she is the one that acted, not Cuomo.

The only revelation in the 2003 story is your ironic quote from David Paterson when he was Senate Minority Leader "My initial reaction was 'I just don't understand it,'

To that I say, Oh really?!

What is off balanced in the Paladino/Cuomo coverage is that Paladino offered his 10 year old child up on a platter for scrutiny. He opened the flood gates himself and didn't think of the ramifications on his child - doesn't sound like a very protective father. His big mouth once again caused the problem and now he wants the media to plug the dyke. Since they are probing Paladino's character not the 10 year old's, and his personal and business choices are coming up very - questionable he is trying to diffuse the stench from his own trail. He is trying to bully the media to believe if I am a cheater then everyman is, so Cuomo must be, why don't you look at his marriage.

Andrew Cuomo is a lot of things that can be debated, but he most certainly is a Father that protects his children, has a very special relationship with them and the genuine love shines through. He has every right to feel pierced by baseless accusations that are thrown by a bloated old man that intentionally hurt his children. Any sane person has to wonder why Paladino offered his young child up for scrutiny, but when a man's judgement on such simple issues is clouded, I wonder about the clarity for the hard stuff. And by that I do not mean affairs, paramours or ponies!

Dicker biased? He's just a damn good aggressive reporter. Something we could use in the North Country other than the superficial, fact hiding, coverage we too often have.
Dicker exposed corruption with Pataki and did the same thing with Spitzer- and he's certainly no friend of Paterson.
It seems to me that a much as people don't loike cover ups, they have no respect for a tough journalist like Dicker. The North Country is too used to "news" that consists of coverage of bake sales and ice cream socials-nothing changes when it doesn't get exposed.

Carl admitted he had a ten year old daughter from an affair before the media could say, "gotcha". When did he offer his child or the affair on a platter for scrutiny? By that logic, Cuomo just said, "I have daughters too" so he just offered them up on a platter for scrutiny?

I just saw Liz interview Cuomo and she asked him if he wanted to offer his private emails up for scrutiny. After evading the question he flirted with her by saying she did not have to worry about him making the emails she sent to him public. The implication being that she had sent him salacious emails. It went over with her like Chippendale dancers at a girls softball tournament. Maybe Dicker should ask him about those emails?

Yes Dicker is a talented reporter but he is biased in what stories he chooses to pursue. All of this is smoke and mirrors to avoid covering the important stuff about this race

4:47 , gotta agree with you . I've said all along, money knows money, and I am sure Carl knows Andy, and there is much more to this story. Dicker got what was coming to him;I am glad to see Carl stick up for himslf. In a way he reminds me of Gov. Christy , of NJ; calls it as it is.
