Why So Few People Really Bother to Vote in NY

New York is a state where we complain of dysfunction but the system rewards it as well....Most experts think Rep. Charles Rangel and Sen. Pedro Espada will win their primaries...and if they lose the alternative candidates are peppered with scandal as well.
This quote from Fred Siegel in the NYP this morning sums it up:

"In a state where the two parties are constituted by billionaires who buy interest groups and public sector unions who buy politicians, the very idea of public interest has been vacuumed out of the system."

Enough said.

That is very well put because its true.. look locally. A guy who wants to be congressman made between6 to 7 million last year alone. Anyone with any common sense would have to ask the question. Why would he want a job like Congress and its troubles. It dosnt take long to figure out that its to better his wealth at our expense... With all the ridicule of Hoffman and his looks and his quirks and inablility to speak you have to admit this is a man who would at least try and change things not buy them..

Ehhh…I don’t know
I didn’t start voting until late in life.
The biggest influence was that my father did not vote and my mom did and I had more in common with dad.
Later on it was because I knew my one vote did not make a difference because it would be wiped out by millions of democrat votes in the state elections.

If you really want to make a difference then you should do things like break into Sarah Palin’s yahoo account. That does way more than one vote would.

My union had no say in who I voted for. Their endorsements mattered squat to me and most of those who worked beside me.

One time when I was getting my license renewed they asked me to register. I said no because a colleague had once told me the reason I never got called for jury duty was because I was not registered to vote.

On a few occasion I had wanted to vote but did not know how or how to register or that I needed to register.

Then one day not too long ago I registered and started voting. I wish I had done it the day I turned 18 but I would have voted for the wrong guy most of the time so I guess it was no harm done.

Interesting, 7:34. You aren't alone.

I'm not sure what all the fuss is about with this voting thing, Jeffrey. According to Thug Shelly and most all of the established power in this state, everything is just fine. Why all this sudden urgency to make changes? Our teachers and government employees have never had it better. The working people have no real problems with the increasing tax burden, and our children have bought into the government school line that you need every bs program they're selling. We want all this to continue. Voting is just a rubber stamp for the system we have, the one that we love. When the kids settle in in whatever state they end up in, they will have a choice as to whether to reestablish the corrupt system they grew up under, or do something different for their kids. That's when voting will become important again. This is an Empire State. Its just not your Empire.

I have voted since I was 18 back in '72. My children were both registered to vote on their 18th birthdays (by me!)and have grown up knowing that it their responsibility, as citizens, to be informed and to exercise their franchise. My grandmother was a 24 year old married working mother before she was allowed to vote because she was a WOMAN and couldn't vote before 1920. So, to those who don't register or vote: Shut up and let things just happen to you and your community or become a voter and have a say in matters. By the way, in NYS we have closed primaries, so if you want to weigh in on who is selected by a party for the Nov. ballot, choose to register as a party member- your choice.

That was a beautiful post. My question is, with all that civic mindedness, how did we manage to morph into the most corrupt, special interest controlled and perverted state government in the nation? How did we possibly become the national leader in lost jobs, exodus of our young citizens, and taxes? And how, in the face of the Thugs we have running this state, will we mindlessly return the same criminals to their elected positions so they continue to run their scam on our children?

But that really was a beautiful post. The capitalized WOMAN part brought tears to my eyes. Are your children government or school employees? That would explain why they're still here.

8:50,
You seriously told people that don't vote to shut up? Request denied!

This year I will donate more money than you make in a year to political campaigns.
The kind of money that helps make people like Dede go from a sure thing to knocked out of the ring.
Try to cancel that with your single vote. Ha!

That 11:29 guy is a real butthead. I like him.

And he probably got a state grant to get the money to give to Dede's campaign to cancel out that feel good guy's vote. Beautiful.
