Senate Race Will Go Down to the Wire as Aubertine Struggles With His Caucus' Image

Senator Darrel Aubertine is trying to counter the bad press in Albany over the Senate with 'morning in Cape Vincent' style commercials touting the twin themes that he is one of us and gets things done of interest to NNY.
Given yesterday's Siena poll showing him slightly behind his GOP opponent, one must ask if that will be enough.
With voter opinions of Patty Ritchie rather sketchy, the temptation would be to ago negative and drive her numbers down....
But its a lot easier to pound on lawyers like Barclay or Renzi. Ms Ritchie has had months to quietly build an image with voters, so the assault on her, while necessary, must be done carefully.
Siena shows Aubertine way ahead in Jefferson...Ritchie way ahead in St. Lawrence...Hometown favorites indeed.
There is no point going negative in St. Lawrence...That would backfire as she is too well known.
The place to go negative is Oswego County, where she leads but is likely not well defined to voters.
Next question is how do you go negative ? Claiming lack of experience won't work this year. You could argue she is a cypher on the issues clinging to her signature fight over license plates. Or that she is a Manchurian candidate on behalf of downstate Republicans.
She will just counter with pictures of Espada and company.
Aubertine has more establishment support than he used to and will get the local newspaper endorsement this time, as he is viewed as a statesman nowadays...
He will be able to spread some love around in terms of dollars to local agencies.
Normally, after fending off two challenges, Aubertine would have gotten a pass, but the shenanigans in Albany created a huge albatross. The one debate question he doesn't want to face is "Why did you vote for Espada as majority leader ?"
What do you say ? Fortunately for him, no one has asked.

I don't believe Democrats voted for Espada as majority leader. That might be a question to ask incumbent Republicans.

Only thing that I can hear that Ms Ritchie did was prevent us from getting new license plates. I have to laugh that her advertisement makes it look as though she is the only one that took on Albany. Odd though that the new plates are popping up all around, I believe Ms. Ritchie and you Mr. Mayor have them.

It would have been mandatory last year to pay for the new plates it wasn't because of Patty fighting for use

Aubertine needs to raise his profile in St. Lawrence and Oswego counties. He should not be so far behind in a Democratic leaning county like the big county.

Heres my take for what its worth.. Aubertine is fairly new to the ALbany game. He has made mistakes and will continue to at times. Does anyone feel Ms. Ritchie dosnt or wont make mistakes? Darrell Aubertine has come through for us in the North Country when needed if if it was something he may have helped create. I dont know what Patty Rithcie has really done for any of us. Darrell Aubertine has made friends in the Senate and that will help us in the future. Mrs. Ritchie has friends that are in the Senate and that could be helpfull in the future but only on their terms. Darrell is a great guy. Patty is a great gal..
Both are hard workers and come from rural roots.
With Darrell my concerns is that downstate sometimes influences his votes.. My concerns with Pat Ritchie is lack of any real stance on any issue let alone any solution for anything. Shes staying mum.. If this is a popularity contest which it is and she wins as she may we will pay for it for years to come.
Based on everything important I will vote for Darrell Aubertine in November.. Thats my take thank you

At least Patty is college-educated and doesn't sound like she just kicked the shit off her boots.

Why do people wonder why downstate treats us like a bunch of hicks? Just look at our Senator.

I posed a question to the Mayor back in AUGUST, THE DAY A. CUOMO came to town to speak at the, 'Italian American Club,' saying,"Mayor why don't you ask Cuomo why he's not prosecuting Espada more fully as Attorney General?" The Mayor knowing that I was a Republican at that time said, "Why don't you go down and ask him yourself!" So I did, and was told by Mr. Cuomo that Espada and anyone else who violates the law will be rooted out in Albany. I believed him on that point, and believe he will help the Middle-Class; and I believe Mr. Aubertine will help him push his program to save NYS. One might say the Mayor made a Democrat out of me in the end. One last thought, Aubertine has seniority, as does Congressman Bill Owens, and that should never be under estimated. Senority is something that can get your district the attention and support it needs from Albany, NY. Serving you District over the long haul is something to admire not denigrate, especially when the people trying to unseat you have no program they're promoting that makes any sense in the real world of politics.

I have to ask, wasn't the license plate deal a one time fee? Didn't 20 percent of the fees go to the county governments? If that is true, considering the fiscasl condition our state and counties are in a one time 25 dollar fee doesn't sound that horrible. But that's just me.

1:41,
We have the highest tax burden in the country. The state and county governments have a spending problem, not a revenue problem. But you're probably governmnt employee, aren't you?

Ya bet he works for Darrel to
Who else would write that stuff

It's a long month before the election, I'm sure Aubertine will get the job done and win again.

Anon 11:33 they are not making the old plates so if you have a new vehicle you need a new plate.

Again we miss the point. NYC is raping us and Aulbertine has behind the NYC agenda 95% of te NYC agenda.

We do not gain anything by re-electing Darrel Aubertine. If the Democrats gain in the majority they will marginalize him and the farm bill legislation will pass, the Oburg Correctional facility will close and NNY will be forgotten. They will not need his vote, nor care what he thinks. They have already shown their cards on this. He certainly has not provided much leadership locally either. The Democrats controlling NYS government especially the Senate have driven the point home to NNYer's that they do not matter, it is all downstate all the time. Like it or not that is the truth and proven fact after seeing them operate!

If the Republicans win the majority again forget Darrel Aubertine, he will get NADA, ZIP, ZILCH.

And a side note on whomever thinks Owens has seniority, they are joking themselves. It takes YEARS of being in the majority to get seniority in Congress. And again, Owens will be in the minority for sure if he wins which will only get him tucked away nicely in a broom closet.

This is reality!

543, You need a wake up call, if you think that electing a republican majority will help things in Ny, take a look at the past 30 years. Here's another wake up call: The party in control means NOTHING! Its not about the party, both parties have proven they have the ability to screw NYers because they put the party ahead of all. Let's go after the partisans and give the people who are in Albany for the right reasons, other good people to work with. This election should be about putting the best person, who has an understanding of issues in office. Patty Ritchie is not the best candidate!!! Look at our history in NYS, voting for someone based on party is what got us here in the first place!

Just because someone is "college educated", that doesn't make them better, more successful or smarter than everyone else!

I encounter many individuals with that piece of paper and they have NO common sense or ability to comprehend. On one of our jobsites, we are dealing that exact thing!. Someone who doesn't have a clue about what he's doing even though he has that paper that says he's "college educated". He has no 'every day' common sense.

I'm didn't attend college and, like many other people who didn't, I am far from stupid!

;Someone on Ritchies team dosnt like farm raised folks. Patty herself I believe is fair minded and not predudicial about things. But this someone that dislikes the farm folks and feels they are fools is probably someone close to her that may end up in Albany influencing her voting if she wins. I think an apology is in order

6:34 thats the problem. Everyone always wants to look back and blame it on someone else. We need to look forward and select people who really want to make a difference. Darrell has had the chance and what has he really accomplished? History is very easy to predict the future ____ well.

Does anyone have any info on any petition drive that Patty Ritchie led when George Pataki mandated we all get new plates???

Mikey, you're doin' fine. I agree with little of what you say but you're ok by me. But please, don't do any more talks about how you used to be a Republican but now you're a Donkey. With a thought process like yours, you never have belonged to anything but the party of feelings. You're an idealist. Nothing wrong with that. Stay honest and spare us the verbage about this political change of yours. Remember, if you want a job as a teacher you have to hee-haw all the time. I'm not sure they would be impressed by this fairy tale of yours either. You're a Dem, you've always been a Dem, and you will die a Dem. But I hope you live a long and happy life.

Patty is hands down a great candidate and I welcome her as our soon to be Senator. It will be nice to have her represent us.

The only thing re-electing Aubertine will get NNY is NOTHING. NYC is getting most of it and if the margin in the Senate continues towards the NYC Dems. they will get everything! This is a crucial year because of redistricting. You may be a Aubertine supporter but supporting him is supporting NYC and condemning our way of life.

The farmers will have the Farm Bill, they will shut down dorms and prisons only in NNY, they will move inmate population to NYC adding city legislators, they will continue to vote for taxes, gun control will increase, children will continue to leave, and businesses will continue to flounder.

Patty has made stances at her level that have helped voters in her county. New Lic. plates were aimed at NNY, brought 100s of thousands of tax dollars back to the county, and was against giving illegal's driver lic. Senator Aubertine should of stopped these in the Senate and county clerk would not of got involved, but not the case.
There are plenty of cases against the Reps. but many of their policies parallel those of NNY.

I just heard Aubertine come up with 34 Millions to expand and save the hospital in Watertown, that is great! That should increase his vote in Jefferson County.

Energy breaks to Basta's Flowers and other business on their electric bills. I love it.

When they did the budget they expected a Billion from the feds, only 750 million came. They expected 100s of million from the Resorvations in Cigs sales and that is not happening.
If we re-elect Aubertine they can try to balance and unbalanced budget but it does not stop the pork spending during election years.
Expect a few more taxes or fees when if he gets back to Albany.

Anon 11:22 Someone put him in as the Democratic Majority Leader. I believe any and all encumbents would vote Espada.

The problem they only got rid of two the the criminal active Dems. The rest are still under investigation and when you see DA ask him why he voted for Espada?

Forget asking him I already know the answer they told him to.

forgot the "out" after Espada

The real question to ask is to ask the Republicans in the State Senate why they engineered the 'coup' that literally brought NYS government to it's knees. Now Carl Paladino says as Governor he will shut down state Government. Ritchie is running on his line therefore she must agree with him and the Republicans that shutting down and stopping state government is in the best interest of the people. Just take a moment and think about what they are saying. The only reason Patty is running is the Republicans know she is not smart and they will be able to control her and get her to anything they want. College or not - she is not very bright!

Anonymous said...

Very stupid, 10:16. Not her, YOU.

If what you say about bringing state government to its knees was true, I'd support it. The only thing on its knees here in NYS is us. Are kids are raped by the lack of jobs, we're taxed into the ground, yet we can't wait to vote Cuomo in and add to Thug Sheldon's power. Then again lots of people like it on their knees. Lots of NYers do.

Unfortunately, I will not be voting for either Aubertine OR Ritchie in this upcoming election. I will go in, close the curtain and push the buttons, but neither of these candidates will get my support.

I am a registered Democrat. I was appalled about the insane antics of the NYC Democrat powerhouse, and believe that the upstate reps got pushed to the side, steamrolled or ignored because they do not hold as much clout as their downstate counterparts. That in and of itself does not trouble me so much, as it is the game that politics plays across the nation.
It is an unfortunate truth that we can only expect minimal output from a junior member of Congress, and I cannot fault freshly elected individuals to 'part the Red Sea' or perform any other political miracles with the minor power they wield.

The main points that determine my vote, or more accurately, the withholding of my vote for either of these candidates is in respect to how Aubertine or Ritche handle social issues that effect people NNY, and their (slight) potential to shift the balance of power in Albany.

As it has been stated above, both Aubertine and Ritchie have relatively little experience in state politics. In his short time in Albany, Aubertine has done what he could to address upstate issues. I can respect that. He co-sponsored a bill that passed allowing restaurants to donate leftover food to the food pantries and homeless shelters, fought for upstate mandate relief and supported the Dignity For All Students Act (DFSA). Yet he did not support the motion to legalize gay marriage in NYS.
Now I will not light the debate fire here about opinions on gay rights. Suffice to say that I support EQUAL rights for ALL Americans regardless of their preferences, etc. And that means gay rights, to me, is a significant and deciding factor on who receives my vote.
Ergo, Aubertine will not be getting my vote. Its that simple for me, and I wrote his office and told their camp as much.

On the other side, we have Patty Ritchie. During her time as St. Lawrence county clerk, she has maintained a clean nose, and been relatively quiet in her work. There's merit to that, and regardless of party affiliation, I respect that. But the fact remains that Ritchie is a Republican.
In addition to not supporting gay rights, and a host of other issues that I do not agree with, essentially if Republicans gain even the slightest majority in November, and we elect Democrat Cuomo governor, there will be nothing but DEADLOCK. Nothing will be accomplished for ANY people of NYS simply because Albany will be locked in a futile and useless bi-partisan power struggle. Its bad enough that Albany barely cranks out enough good measures for the people of New York (let alone Northern New York) but in this scenario, even LESS will be accomplish, wasting EVEN MORE taxpayer dollars that are wrung from us.

By this logic, of course, it would seem that I should vote for Aubertine simply to try and help ensure that Democrats remain in control in Albany. Fortunately for me, (and truly for all Americans) I have the precious right to vote for the candidate that supports issues that I consider vital and important to myself, my family and to society as a whole. If only our elected officials had that luxury as well. Its a flawed system, of course, and run by the best government money can buy.

But that's a topic for another day.

Thank you for supporting the First Amendment.

There was a lot of revenue lost for the state and the counties because the license plate's were shot down.

I wonder how much lost revenue it meant for each county. Why isn't the media looking into this? Pataki was inducted to sainthood when he did it but just because a Democrat did it, it's all of a sudden not a good thing?

I'll bet Pattie Ritchie liked how good her budget looked when she took in all that revenue under Pataki. Doesn't part of the money stay local and the rest goes to the state?

The democrats control the senate with 32 members. Of the 32 members, 26 come from NYC. Aubertine votes with them. otherwise they woulb not be able to pass anything - but they set the agenda, which is completely focused on NYC. Any republican will vote against NYC interests and support the interests of our nothern region.

As a New York State Correction Officer working at OCF, I can only say thank you to Senator Aubertine. The man fought to keep our prison open (and was successful) and then even went further to make sure more officers were being transferred in to increase our staffing levels. I know that my NYSCOPBA brothers and sisters that I speak to are with you. I'm sure his opponent is a nice person and she is a great county clerk, but Aubertine has the proven experience and positive results as the Senator. In my opinion it is a no-brainer. Thanks again Darrel for all your help and support. GO OCF!
