This is a kind of shocking article from NPR...The head of the TEA Party group backing Doug Hoffman, openly admitting their man was ill prepared to compete in last nights debate......The Matt Doheny camp is crowing about the statements and is busy distributing the link to this story...Normally I wouldn't bite on such a craven publicity gambit, but when his own people say he is not fit for Prime Time Bill Owens.....Well that is something to raise my eyebrows just a tad.
Last year and this year, the Hoffman campaign has minimized exposure of their candidate to the public....They have been selling a concept, not a person.....Problem is we elect a person.
If I were ambitious I'd drive to Saranac Lake next week to see the next debate...That's a long drive, especially since I can't vote in the primary.

I was there last night, and, honestly, I thought Hoffman exceeded expectations.
Yes, he stammered a bit and didn't project as effectively as Doheny, but, aside from blatantly dodging the question about his refusal to debate South or West of Franklin county, he had competent answers to all of the questions. Nothing like the Watertown Daily Times debacle last year.
He also stood strong against Doheny's attacks and got several smart jabs of his own in.
Meanwhile, Doheny seemed polished, but sometimes arrogant. His "don't criticize me for being successful" comments may have played well to a Tea Party crowd, but I found them equal parts condescending and patronizing.
6:45 seems to be damning Hoffman with faint praise. Why don't we all admit it. Personally, Hoffman is probably a great guy, the kind of guy you would want for a neighbor. But that doesn't translate that he will be an effective voice for the 23rd in DC. He is just in way over his head. His refusal to even talk in public west of Harrietstown is the deal breaker for me. That and he lets his hired guns Long and Ryan do ALL his talking for him. No balls, no vote.
He is a great guy. A class of his own. Thats more than the ABay drunk can say. Hoffman did well last night in the debates. Another example of trying to make something out of something thats not there. If hes in over his head wheres that leave Doheny. Doug Hoffman will win this primary because the people of the North Country want him as their represenative. Arrogance and money is what this Don4ey is about and I think North county voters see the light on that issue.
I just hope Dougie stays in the race after Doheny hands him his ass.
I wasn't attempt to damn Doug with faint praise. I was trying to offer an honest assessment of what I saw last night: an imperfect performance, but considerably improved over last year.
Can Hoffman best Owens in a debate? Probably not, but Congressional campaigns aren't decided primarily by debate.
The reality, I think, is that the conditions of this race are very unfriendly to Owens. It's going to be a bad year for democrats and incumbents nationwide, and it's going to be a very bad year for a one-year incumbent Democrat from a right-leaning district who failed to distinguish himself from the dem establishment in DC.
What the Republicans need most to win is a clear message, a clean candidate, and a unified party. For better or worse, only Doug can deliver that.
Maybe Doheny is the better candidate in a vacuum, but he is not the better candidate for this particular race.
Not sure why "charisma" and "charm" are becoming such a big deal in this race. We're electing a legislator, not an executive. We don't need a Clinton/Reagan (talking about presentation and style here) who can inspire a nation to shoot for higher goals. We need someone who can rip apart a piece of legislation from top to bottom, find where the numbers don't add up, and work to replace it with the correct math. That person is CPA, Doug Hoffman.
Maybe Doug should get the hint, this shit is not for him.He will look foolish if he runs on that line again.I have been saying this all along he is the spoiler in this race as he was in the special. The only one with a shot at Billy is Doheny. Please stop just giving this shit to the Dems and come together its simple people we need to as Republicans and Conservatives work it out thats what is gunna beat Billy Bob at the polls.....
Well said 8:27
Charm would be a bonus though.
I think a xanax would help Dougie.
I don't find the faster talker to necessarily be the most charming.
Doheny comes off a little simaoesque.
But I'll take either one over Owens.
