New Yorks Latest Tax Debacle....

After a trip to Clayton the other day to buy some legal cigarettes and talking to the wholesaler, I got to thinking a bit more about the latest farce out of the Capital.
If you head on down to Nedrow and visit the tribe, I am told you can still buy brand name cigarettes without the $4.35 state tax per pack...and of course the even less expensive Native American brands are there too.
Despite the assurances of yet another Governor , all the private sector stores can only view the party through the window. A court order....probably a correct one has stayed NYS from leveling the playing field.
Now people go to the "res" and buy for themselves and friends...or have a relative mail 'em in from out of state...All because Albany feeds us this nonsense about how they hate smoking but lust for the revenue...And the higher tax wouldn't be a burden on the convenience stores because by golly this Governor was going to get tough.....
The same crowd in Albany who caved in to Turning Stone and gave them a liquor license to operate in a casino, something no private sector hotel or resort gets to do.
The wizards on the Hudson have created a black market and thousands of tax evaders who used to be taxpaying citizens....The next Governor will again go to the well next year.
I was talking to a retired state worker the other day...an avid Democrat....who buttleggs in his spare time by marking em up ten bucks a carton.
I ask him why as a good Democrat he didn't want to pay this tax.
Those taxes are for other people.....but given the state's reliance on these revenue schemes, even the good Democrats who buttlegg are exposing the system for what it is...Lunacy.

you lay the blame on Albany Democracy, yet you acknowledge that the judge's order was "probably a correct one." Which way do you want it? Both ways?

If I was still huffin' and puffin' I would get a caravan of 8 or 9 blue chevy vans moving between Chapel Hill and the great white north here. Two hour drive to a Parking Area / Truckstop, two hours back. Switch car keys and vans. Northbound leaves loaded, southbound leaves empty. Rinse and repeat.

New York State government has no NADS.
The state is scared of the tribe and what they will do if we try to collect taxes. The state has backed down every time! Somebody is obviously lining someone elses pockets. More corruption within our state.
Get rid of all incumbants and start over in November

I'm always amazed at "good Democrats" who don't want to pay taxes. State employee who supports Donkeys and bootlegs ciggies to avoid the very same taxes that allowed him to get fat. Neat.

After Paladino wins we will become a normal state again and the mass exodus will end.

Cracks me up. The state health department has commercials that urge you to quit smoking. But the state also relies on the taxes smoking generates. Two faced #@$%.

P.S.> like the Wizards on the Hudson line.

Those ciggie taxes are part of Sheldon's state budget. Now that we're not going to get those funds, are they going to revisit spending or just pretend they have a budget in place? I'll bet Shelly does the latter. It was a pretend budget anyway.

bootleg is spelled as I just showed you, not buttleg.

Buttlegging is a term coined by the media to describe the illicit sale of cigarettes .....sometimes referred to as "butts"

Think about this for a minute! "IF" everyone quit smoking in N.Y. like they say the want us to, there would be no more tax revenue from ciggs at all! Makes ya wonder what they would tax then.......

You gotta be pretty slow not to "get" buttlegging.

I would guess that the amount of revenue that NYS raises from cigarette taxes has to be close to the amount it spends on cessation pushes, Medicaid, and Healthy NY stuff. If New Yorkers stop smoking, we won't need the money take care of those who don't have the foresight to take care of themselves.

Too bad medicaid and healthy NY offers other "services" to their clients besides "how to quit smoking", so the tax dollars would still have to be paid out! I'm thinking, if we all had to suck it up and tighten our belts and budgets, I think the government ought to learn to how do the same!

I'll betcha we see legalized marijuana real soon, followed by an army of counselors helping you to quit. Sounds fine to me. Then we can drive to the mall while talking on our cell phones smoking a joint. How can it get any better than that?
