Conservative Party Preservation on Many Agendas

Defeated Congressional candidate Doug Hoffman wisely stayed away from the media Tuesday night as he ponders his options in the wake of the narrow but clean defeat dealt him by Matt Doheny. Hoffman has some thinking to do. He has a following, but can he win on the Conservative Party line alone ?
Whatever he decides , Doheny needs to reach out to his supporters and ignore him. Hoffman has no money to compete in this race and will drop from view quickly.
Conservative Chair Mike Long is in survival mode. He cannot leave Rick Lazio on his line as Lazio will not draw the votes needed to keep Long's party on the ballot.
Long needs the GOP to allow Paladino to take the spot held by Lazio and if that happens the GOP may insist the rug be pulled on Hoffman.
Meanwhile , Doheny insiders say the situation was dire recently in the campaign with polls showing Hoffman leading. A spate of negative adds drove down Hoffman turnout and numbers...or so goes the theory....It was a close win for Doheny and any number of things likely affected the final numbers

Good point Mr. Mayor, but Paladino needs the Conservative line as much as the Conservatives need him. Paladino can't be seen to knock off another TEA party candidate. He needs to keep the Mad as Hell crowd energized and if he is seen to participate in the same political machine machinations as other conventional candidates, then he's lost. No, Hoffman stays on the Conservative line, splits the Republican vote evenly, and Owens wins in a cake walk.

Cuomo has his hands full. The Dems aren't off the hook with Espada's defeat. They did business with him and rewarded the scum bag with high office. Problem is, the Republicans did the same thing. So they both have dirty hands. It's a toss up. No party has the moral high ground.

On balance – Mad as Hell.

So, Mayor are you admitting that negative advertising worked? That's what it seems like won it for Doheny.

I thought negative advertising wasn't allowed in the fair Jefferson County, except when it's their own boy apparently.

Doheny won nothing but the vote of the old school GOP. If Hoffman really thinks he is the better canidate he should stay in until the end. The conservatives thought enough of him to allow him on their line he shouldnt let them down now... The mainstream country club GOP always votes for the traditional canidate we need a change for the good of the state and our party.. Doug, good campaign and stay with it until the finish.

Hoffman needs to do the honorable thing and drop out. He lost. Plain and simple. Unless you want more represntation from Owens, support Matt Doheny in November. The candidate who WON last night and who will WIN in November.

Doheny needs to do the honorable thing and drop out. He spent a bagillion dollars and had billboard size signs on PJ's property and still only won by a few hundred votes.

On the other hand, he mioght be apt to split the Owens/Pelosi/Dede/libtard vote as much as he splits the conservative/republican vote.

Dougie can win the three-way. He keeps all the votes from Tuesday and maybe picks up some of Owens.

EJ's math is stunning. Doheny is going to take votes from Hoffman. Last night proved that beyond doubt. Hoffman will not get votes from Owens, why would he? If he was capable of stripping tons of votes off of Owens, he would have won the Special last time around.

Unlike last year, Hoffman will have no real staff, no money, and no national interest. Conservative groups which endorsed Hoffman last year will either endorse Doheny or stay out.

All of this said, if Hoffman wants to play the spoiler, he sure can. But he will be politically finished.

Whether you like it or not some of the people that voted for Doheny did so because of the way Hoffman attacked Dede last year and this year. Alot of local Republicans still like her. It will be interesting to see if those voters stay with Doheny or go with Owens.
