WDT: Ahoy ....Candidate Admits to Tipsy Boating

Wow, now we are getting somewhere...the nitty gritty of the lives of the rich and famous. That's what you have to expect when running for high office...or even low office...
I know my foes spent a lot of time investigating me when I got into politics, but for some reason there were no arrests, judgments, defaults, love children, or even overdue library books. I can just imagine how much poking around goes on in a race for Congress.
There's not much you can do with a bad incident except to fess up, apologize and promise to do better next time....I hope he doesn't insist on making his cuff time into a teachable moment. We all can figure out what happened.
There are bodies of water in the Nation's Capital where you can get in trouble...Remember Wilbur Mills and the Tidal Basin. But I guess we can take Mr Doheny at his word and I am sure he feels bad about what happened. The tough thing about being a forty year old candidate as opposed to a sixty year old is that the indescretions are years in the past instead of decades.
Now, as for the other offense, and that is not having sufficient PFD's on board. My boating days are in the past but I believe in wearing one and in fact the time I was rescued by the same Coast Guard, my passenger and I were both wearing them even though it was broad daylight and we had not been drinking. I was just a lousy sailor.

Yeah, you can't drink and boat. Its not only the law but its common sense. As far as miscounting his life jackets, that can happen. Now, am I going to vote for Owens/Pelosi because of this? Extremely doubtful.

This is all the norm for Matty. Check him out good old Matty is at the bar to the end. Yes he got more mature, he gets just as drunk and just has a flunky drive him now. All this adds up to Matty wanting to join the greatest private party in the world the DC crowd. We do not need guy going to DC to party we need someone who will be sober working... Hey Matty how many jobs have you created with your 6 mill bonus?

Common sense would tell you not to drink and drive...The consequences are very "unhealthy".
Boats look so innocent, but Mr.Murphy is never far away; one thing lead to another and before you know it you are in a heap of trouble.

Next time you go out on a boat, leave the bottle behind and you might want to read up a little about boating and safety tips before you head out...its good for your health and those on board!

I think that it takes some really courage to step up and admit wrong doings. From a political aspect, it was smart of him to get it out of the way. Many other politicians and celebs would have kept it quiet hoping it would be brought up. Matt stepped up and admitted his mistake. 6 years ago. Lets move forward and look towards the real issue if the next election. We all make mistakes, and if you wanna be immature and dwell on someones mistake like a kid in high school, go right ahead, cause it makes you look like the foolish one.

A mistake is one thing. He was threating U.S. Coast Guard Officials in the commission of their duties to keep our waterways safe. They had to hand cuff him. He's a mean arrongant drunk.

Courage???It was all about controlling the story..from what I understand he is going to need to be alot more courageous as more info becomes public..

Anonymous said...

He "feels bad about what happened," or "feels bad that he got caught", or more so, "feels bad that it's in the news now?"

We need to measure these things carefully.

Most in Congress always feel bad (when they get caught and/or exposed (no pun intended)..."

Those of you who have NEVER had a drink while boating or out fishing on a hot summer day raise your hand....

Anon 3:12 well said. Lets move on. Crap happens he has fessed up and lets stick to the issues. I learned never throw stones in a glass house.

Let me clue you in Mat has dinking issues, ask Matt to pledge to give up any alcohol and see how far that goes. So far he has won 2 things the party boss vote and the bar vote…

He'll be feeling for the North Country folk on his "private island" But then again Didn't a Sheriff's Deputy and a County Leg. have their DWI's converted over to a slap on the hand?????

The troubling part's of this story are the apparent anger that Doheny showed the Coast Guard when he got caught and that he owns a private island.

I have a hard enough time believing that a guy who just made a bonus of $6 Million plus his salary understands the needs of everyday folks, but then to own an Island...come on...those people aren't like us and they aren't "One of us..."

Anonymous said...

Since when is owning an island something to be ashamed of? This class warfare stuff is wearing thin. God forbid a guy makes something of his life. Should we all live in a shotgun shack to make you feel better about youself?

No just find it hard to believe he'll be in "Our Corner" when the going gets tougher. He's done like burnt toast, Hoffman will beat him 2 to 1.

All the candidates in this race are millionaires, by the way. At least Doheny (or Owens for that matter) isn't charging his own campaign contributors interest and paying himself rent....

Anon 9:30: The idea of someone being in 'your corner' sounds like you need someone to take care of you, which is why I think the Owens and Hoffman campaigns are very similar. They are rooted in the old Democratic Party idea that the wealthy and successful are bad people and that the general population needs to be taken care of, to be protected from them. I prefer to take care of myself, thank you. PS Ole Doug plays it both ways. He is a millionare, but knocks Doheny for being rich. Oh the hypocrisy!!

Yes I have seen Doheny leave bars in a condition that what not good for driving including yours mayor. Is this what we want another hypocrite. I definitely do not. I figured once the Indy Party endorsed him he was a drunk, ie. Graham, Rice, etc. Unfortunately Doheny has not learned any lessons he is just under the radar. I would hate to see innocent people killed because this man has money and feels that its ok he rules, NOT.

Annon 6:15 - drinking issue? Pledges??? Are you the same type of democrat that pressed the late Ted Kennedy to take that same pledge? Wooooooo. I think not...

There's just something about water sports these politicians love.

Wibur Mills swimming in the Tidal Basin
Gary Hart yachting on Monkey Business
Ted Kennedy running the "Kennedy Car Wash" Doheny drunkenly playing ultimate fighter with the U.S. Coast Guard

His private island? About to be deserted, I'd predict ... send Skipper and crew back to the "mainland."

BWI, or DUI, or DWI - all pretty much the same ... not a savvy person (tried to beat the system they now want to work in??? ...)

You are right Dan, Doheny is part of the most notorious crime family in the north country. They have been located in Alex Bay for years. That shoe hasn't fallen yet, but it's about too. The GOP will never learn. They sold out this time.

Anonymous said...

I even heard Doheney was the real mastermind of 9/11!! You think it is just a coincidence A-Bay is so close to Canada, where the terrists came into this country from??? Probly had relatives on the grassy knoll in Dallas back in '63 too.

It is not against the law to drink and then drive a boat.
It is against the law to drink until your BAC is .08 and then drive a boat.
A decade ago it was legal to drink much more than that and still drive.
The dangers of drinking and driving are significant but highly exaggerated.

Ranks up there with texting and driving.
But in a boat no one gets hurt unless it is a cigarette boat or a speed demon.

I watched COPS enough to know that their version of being combative and an honest version are two different things.

To the gentleman/lady that "watched Cops enough", you sir, mam offer proof that "idiots" should not be allowed near computers!

WOW what a country !!

So is this yet another in a long line of rich, drunken bozos who have demonstrated juvenile immature behavior and poor judgement then seek our support for public office and control of taxpayers hard earned $ citing their so called well reasoned "transformation" into seasoned and dedicated public leaders ? -

YEAH RIIIIIGHT congress is already overun with these jackwagons . Where in hell are the adults in this society?

WOW, its obvious that Owens and Hoffman have their henchmen out. Lets look at this issue please without a sense of bias (for all our sakes). First of all, this even happend 6 years ago. Second, it's terrible that some of you are focusing on the fact that Matt has his own private island. Since when should someone be punished for being succesful? Isn't that the American dream? Matt fessed up to something that really doesn't have any bearing on the election and the issues this coming election. Nobody is perfect. If you are going to focus on something that is completly idiotic as an "issue". go right ahead. But when the election time comes, I hope you think about the real issues and focus on who will be able to help our ocuntry in the future.

Confession is good for the soul but that doesn't translate into why anyone should vote for an unknown with a self admitted checkered past of indulgent behavior .

I have worked too hard and too long and saved and invested to get where i am and am NOT going to vote for another self indulgent "frat boy" silver spooner screw things up for us

Anonymous said...

Yeah, let's stick with sorority sister Owens/Pelosi, who will sell us out in a minute by spending our country into the ground. The man has absolutely no backbone. I cannot support Naaancie after what they have done and will continue to do.

So u want a jr varsity BUSHIE silver spooner, frat boy again ?? The former version of this scenario a spineless jellyfish who spent our asses into deficit by getting us involved in 2 wars so he could show daddy and Dickie how tough a little Bushie Boy he was. He hadta git SAD -AM for dADDY , then screwed up Katrina , and blew a major surplus -- oh yeah THAT takes talent and brains , all the while destroying the middle class so his trust funder buds could benefit remember "Kenny Boy " ( Enron) and Good job Brownie

-- UH No thanks , been there done that. We've seen the fallout from Silver Spooners with Trust funds .. u go ahead and support that and the country will be at war tru the NEXT decADE --
