Paladino’s ‘Dignity Corps’...Guaranteed Liberal Outrage

Carl Paladino will cause a stir in NY over his proposal to turn vacant prisons into CCC style dorms for the indigent to learn job skills and "personal hygiene." This concept is anathema to the modern welfare state, where the notion of standing in line for cheese has given way to government issued debit cards so nobody is stigmatized.
The prison concept is a bit harsh but the dormitories are not....We will never know or be told how much Jefferson County spends on hotel rooms for people who don't, or can't work.
We have all heard the anecdotal accounts of this process and what's wrong with an efficiently run county dormitory for temporary housing.
FDR's Civilian Conservation Corps accomplished things, but today the party of FDR would not allow such a thing. There is nothing wrong with helping people...There is also nothing wrong with working.
Mr. Paladino's precise plan may not be the best or just answer, but the concept is something we need to acknowledge....I will think about it next time I am at the Nice n Easy and the person ahead of me is buying pizza by the slice on our dime.

If the county is trying to get out of the nursing home business do you really think they want to get in to the indigent housing business?

They already are. The inn across from Pete's is full all the time with people paid for by county dss or welfare. They pay top dollar for rooms every night for weeks at a time for some people.

At least Paladino's thinking outside of the box.

10% of the people, will present 90% of the problems. That's why we need a costant flow of fresh ideas. Maybe using closed down prisons would be better than a hotel room.

The county has to put up people in those motels. They do the best they can at doing it with the taxpayers in mind, but the laws pretty well spell out what has to be paid for. If you have a gripe, take it to the legislature. Shelly Silver and the boys wrote those entitlements. But we have people here who defend him. So don't gripe. Pay up, shut up, and continue to vote Donkey. You did this to yourselves. The Social Services rules/laws were written by Thug Shelly. Enjoy. I'm sure McGrath will change things if he gets in there.

I like it! Anything to get the stinkers, the hackers, the coughers, the whackers off the street is fine by me. One prooblem is, many in that bunch are mentally ill - who would require different care. But for the majority that can but won't it's a fine idea.

Why dont we do this, put most of them in positions working for the State I'm sure 75% of them can handle one of those husler jobs sitting on there asses making big bucks and fealing realy important. Sorta like some of the posters on this thread.I dont have to use one of those cards for food.I do rely on family health plus, and the childrens clinic for health care. The problem around here is when the military families move there relatives here by the bus load drop them off at social services, some with out green cards. Then we have to deal with it thats what your seeing across from petes along with some pedos that just got released from the pedo friendly Jefferson County Jail....

No Evilness, they're not mostly mentally ill. That's a line put out there by your ilk to explain away the system. Most have been taught that the taxpayer will set them up in a nicer place than they will get if they work and try to pay for things. There is no long term incentive to better themselves. The mental illness story is floated for people like you to swallow. Glad to see you're doing your job. That's what party line Donkeys do, both when they vote and when they talk. Again, these rules were written by Shelly and the boys in Albany. Take credit for them and enjoy.

What about the NYS Senate, what role do they play in our gov't? Am I to believe the Assembly runs the whole show? I can't quite swallow that. It's easy to point the finger at one party rule; what we really need to key on, is why do we have one party rule? ; what happened to the other party? Was it in-fighting, a lack of vision, a lack of trust from the people? All the above? I'm not trying to ire people, but if we truly want (at least) 2 party rule (as a system of checks and balance, which I do believe we need) the Republican party really needs to take a deep look at itself, with a vision to the future, instill some younger blood , do not play the political gotcha games, and "honest hard work" for the peoples support.

The Senate has been and will continue to be closely divided. It has served as our only defense against Shelly in many instances, but those times are over. Now things pass over there on straight party line votes too. But the Assembly has been where most all the complete foolishness begins, from welfare/medicaid rules to tax increases to the latest gun control schemes. Its all Shelly's stuff. And that's where things get stopped as well. Campaign finance rules and hidden income regulations are all done by Shelly. Rick, if you think it ain't so. Hold on. This will be one hell of a ride after Sheldon gets even more powerful after the next election cycle. You've said you worked a government gig, so you'll be fine. I do too. So I'll be just chippy. But I warn you, get ready to have some real fun. Sheldon made no attempt to address reality last year (10% budget increase) or this year, with numbers that don't add up for anyone. Next year will be more of the same. And this Cuomo guy is telling us he will clean things up. He doesn't have the power to challenge Sheldon. Only the voters have. And from reading what you have to say, we won't. Too many people think of this as a bipartisan hate issue. Its not. Its about Sheldon Silver.
