I like this quote from the NYT:"The governor and legislative leaders are under pressure to make structural changes that will bring new discipline to state spending, but few expect them to do so."
A bit like paying your credit card payment with your credit card?
Bet your ass no "accured interest" will be tied to the "loan" ... let's hope a court says no ... they should - this is a no-brainer.
(chuckle)Nothing can go wrong with that plan...
Dan, a loan is a loan is a loan. You like loans. You've never had a problem with loans. You never met a loan you didn't like. Yes Daddie, can I have another. Government in debt has never been an issue for you. Who cares where we borrow the money from? Lets just raise taxes, spend more money, and take out more loans. Wait, isn't that what we're doing already?Kermwit
absolutely terrible idea . As an economist i could never advise that one borrow from future obligations and at the same time put thousands of folks at risk . This approach is reckless , a restructuring of the state's agencies and staffing is what is needed in order to reduce , eliminate and curtail redundancies and inefficiencies . ALL agencies are in need of serious streamlining and budgetery discipline . The sooner the better
10:31 What has being reckless have to do with it. We've been spending money at a fearsome rate since the Great One and Nancy took over and haven't cared a bit where it came from. In fact, Kelmwit says we haven't borrowed enough money. So why care about where we get it? All that other stuff you said involves real change and I'm not able to understand that. I say, keep doing what we are doing. I don't give a damn if we steal it from our kids, then lie about it and tell everyone we did it for them. Uh, well, I guess we're doing that too.
2: 2:04 delusional cynicism Never solved any problem
2:59 What makes you think I'm being critical? I'm just a party line Donkey puking up the same crap I've been trained to do. I cannot imagine why you would find this offensive. Isn't this the plan you will vote for this fall, same ol, same ol? No doubt you've been doing it for years and you're just a little bit put off by a nutcase like me who points out what you have done to yourself. Don't feel bad, you're not alone. Our state is full of people who put themselves in front of the interests of their own children. Otherwise, we could never have gotten to this point. Now where was I? That's right. Free Stuff. Keep borrowing. I love Shelly. Vote Donkey. It's for the children.Just keep doing what we're doing now. It works for me.
Your egomaniacal cynicism 8 pm is akin to a saturday nite live routine -- laughable but perhaps you love the sound of your own lunacy a bit too much -------- BTW FWIW, i'm neither a donkey nor an elephant. i'm as independent a thinker as they come and have little use for party hacks or tired stereotypes
As a fellow economist I agree with anom 2:04. Make the hard decissions, do not put this burden on our children. This is the same shell game the state play with its four funds and look at the mess we are in.
So you're an independent thinker, 8:53? That's a good thing. If that is the case I'm surprised my ridicule offends so, but its possible. Not my business, really. We can all believe what we want to believe. But Sir, tell me where I'm wrong. Here in NY we have sent our best young people away for over two generations. They wanted opportunity. We've been left with a political class, or a daddy/mommy class, kids blessed with parents who can get them in the best schools and jobs. Certain people never have a problem getting jobs as teachers or state agency workers. The same folks, when they mature, have no problem getting singled out for government loans and grants to grow their businesses. So even the people working outside government love government largess. If you took away Ft Drum, Schools, Prison jobs, hospitals, law enforcement and now healthcare, you would have no meaningful employment left for youth to build careers upon. Working for government is the only way to stay here. Unless you are very, very lucky. Our state has made a business of taxing businesses into the groud, then down the road. All with a goal of a goal of making things better for the government classes while more difficult for taxpayers. There is no end in sight for this. We know it is wrong, but keep on doing it. I never thought I would see us killing the future of our kids, while lying about what we are doing. We are only looking out for ourselves. Its not just the teacher union who build their greed system on lies. So many have convinced themselves that they are entitled to everything they get.None of this will end until politicians learn to say no and quit buying votes, and we citizens learn that we are not entitled to everything we think we are.
. Finally a dialogue !!!Not surprisingly i agree with your DEFINITION of the problem . That said we have DEFINED the problem for quite some time and i am MORE interested in SOLUTIONS .In that search i keep my cynicism under control with the full knowledge that change will only come when POSITIVE and Hopeful actions take precedence over raucous , angry and often over the top zealotry. That solves nothing and frankly turns most folks off to the point the zealot is ignored or worse.WE are the key to our own destiny. I agree that in some instances both the Donkey and Elephant are woeful and that NNY has always been a sluggish economy. New York State would be "under water " without the tax revenue generated in the Greater NYC metro area so of course teh city will be pre-eminent . NNY is a NET winner in terms of tax revenue recd vs tax revenue generated-- so the oft heard emotional statement lets get rid of the city is not in our best interest . As i stated long ago in this blog the State will need to consolidate , streamline and reduce multiple levels of redundancy in order to get the ball rolling . Property taxes need to be capped and school districts held to a statewide MINIMUM size of 1000 K-12 with benchmark defined uniform workload measures for staffing What solutions DO YOU PROPOSE ??? FWIW: Goal -oriented individuals regardless of their socio-economic beginnings will assess situations and ADAPT and Deal with whatever action makes most sense : Always have -- Always will So sir please focus on problem resolution rather than continually defining the problem ---i'm all ears-- What do you have ???
I've proposed these solutions before. I've proposed them years ago. I'll state 'em simply once more.A real freeze on all government wages and hiring. Not most, ALL. Do this for three years. Than allow government spending to increase only at the same rate we allow Social Security rate increases. Tie it to that same COLA. THIS SAME FREEZE APPLIES TO SCHOOLS. Actually, schools have led the way in greed this past decade.Implement significant co-pays for all teachers and all city employees in the state. The fact that many teachers are paying next to nothing for health insurance amounts to theft. Taxpayers cannot afford to pay for this crime any longer.Freeze property taxes for two years, then allow them to increase only at the rate of the same COLA listed above.Balance our budget, nationally and in NY State. This would eliminate the huge borrowing costs that are threatening to bankrupt us and stabilize money supplies for the folks. It would make college more affordable and businesses would be able to plan better. Reform the State Retirement System. People should not be able to retire with benefits equal to twice their annual salary. That's criminal, but unfortunately routine. Unless every dime is reinvested in conservation, eliminate hunting and fishing licenses. Ya have to be 45 to get married. You can marry a tree if you want to, who cares?Don't dump all the water out of the St Lawrence every year, then hide and say "we had to do if for the Canadians". That's what you get when you hire dumbass silver spoon babies to run that show. As the water comes in, through snow and rain, THEN let some out. That way you don't get caught with your pants down. There, now mail me my $150 million or whatever you were gonna spend studying that crap.Free Mental Health Care for Wingnuts
So are you going to just talk ? If you are seriously interested in actually DOING something about it --- Run for office . Put some of that wasted energy into action and start by getting off this blog and create a campaign strategy and CONVINCE others that YOU have some realistic solutions -- otherwise all this is strictly intellectual masturbation.I look forward to seeing you actually do something other than venting on a blog
I was gonna run for office but some guy named Bruno called me from Obama's office and convinced me it was in my best interests not to. You know guy, no one wants to hear a wingnut like me talk about much of anything. If it weren't for blogs, guys like me wouldn't even be heard from. Isn't it frightening to think we're just driving around like regular folk? I really like that intellectual masturbation line. One of the best. Thanks. You should go with a name. You have a lot goin for ya. I like you. Have a nice evening.
Why not drop the humor and seriously COMMIT to making things Better . Your ideas , once we get past the cynicism are not unrealistic . You might be surprised about how they might be received by a RATIONAL audience . If you have the drive to make change happen, you NEED to "Get INTO the Game" not just heckle from the Blogging sidelines > Many new faces with the BEST of intents who are blessed with common sense and decency are needed to clean up this mess we call the NYS Legislature Have a Great day !!
I understand and appreciate your thoughts.Wingnut
