Well, today retailers got their retroactive tax form from the state so that not only will new purchases of cigarettes be more heavily taxed, but all butts in inventory on July 1st have to be taxed retroactively.
Why does the state tax retroactively ?.....because it can......

We left NY for a reason - not being cigarette tax as we quit years ago, but taxes on everything else.
A person can't possibly live in NYS - Northern, Upstate, or downstate.
The will be taxing bathroom priveledges shortly.

The "retroactive tax" is "ex post facto." This law would make a strong case for a lawsuit considering the U.S. Constitution explicitly prohibits the federal government or the states from passing ex post facto laws.
Not ex post facto, as they argument the consumer is paying it effective July 1.....But it wouldn't matter...The courts are run by the government.
To paraphrase the great Chris Christie:
New York does not have a revenue problem, New York has a spending problem.
I sure am glad I don’t smoke but I do feel sorry for smokers.
The government does not pass laws to stop minors from possessing smokes.
Therefore they get hooked when they are teens and stay hooked.
Then they get treated like second-class citizens until they quit. They cannot even smoke in a tavern.
It is funny that the liberal is supposed to be the companionate one, yet they always say, “don’t like then quit”. And they don’t care that this affects poor people disproportionately. Where is the compassion?
