Pols reluctantly approve furloughing 100,000 state workers; labor groups file court challenge

The furloughs are law, even though many lawmakers think they will be overturned. Democrats in the Senate voted in lockstep in favor of the budget extender that includes the one day off a week. Of course the GOP had the option of sticking up for those CSEA workers who won't endorse them. Meanwhile Dems will say they had to do it to provent a shutdown of state operations.
Ninety percent of the lawmakers involved in this vote will be relected this fall.
While the parties functioned in lockstep as they do under our system, I can't help but wonder if one Democrat had said no....settle the budget now or shut the state down...Would that be reckless brinksmanship ? Or a courageous and bold move in the public interest ?

There are no problems with the states finances. All is well. I see no reason to react at this time.

There was one member from the North Country that spoke during the debate in the Assembly. That was Scozzafava. She talked about the importance of getting the budget done . She talked about the contractors and the impact that the delays have on municipalities, taxpayers, school districts, etc. Thank you, Dede!

The union will file the charges no matter what it costs the taxpayers. The union has offered no solution and has not helped during this mess at all.. CSEA you need new leadership for sure.. Politicans like Aubertine and Russell are willing to work why cant we get the NYC crowd to join in... Same old shit Jim Wright put us through every year.

Danny Donohue doesn't look like he's missed many meals - typical union "fat" cat

Danny Donohue is the fattened calf . I see no evidence this year that CSEA< NYSUT PEF NYSCOPA Unions are willing to take a cut to save jobs .

Hard to feel any empathy for underworked ,overpaid fat cats

Way off the subject but another NY problem is now Derek Jeter has been linked to steroid use. If proven this would be devastating to NY Yankee fans as the team has become a medical center for steroids over the last decade. One can only assume the STeinbreners know this and possibly provide the substances to the team in an effort to keep the team competive. I personally believe that Jeter and most of the big name stars juice up daily and cheat. Baseball writers have the idea however and that is anyone with ambitions to be in the hall of fame better not get tied to this usage. I constantly here the ikes of Petit and ARod were honest about it and owned up.. Why not, they were caught redhanded.. Be like Clemmons, Swisher Bonds McGugurie and deny it.. Talk about fat cats

Pols reluctantly approve furloughs, but can't "reluclantly approve a state budget on time."

Now watch most of them come home and pander the dickens out of anti-Union/ani-governmment folks who hate just about anything to do with Albany as they try to come out on top with slogans like: the "Devil made me do it" as they seek and probably will win reelection...

Mark my words.

9:34 Pataki hasn't been in there for awhile. Please try, give it a good college try, to avoid the knee jerk Donkey programming you've obviously been gag-reflex trained to regurgitate. The only man who has been there, through all of this, is the Silver thug. The only man who has been there for administration after administration, is the Silver thug. The guy who gave us last years 10% budget increase was the Silver thug. It wasn't Rockefeller, it wasn't Hugh Carey, it wasn't Roosevelt. People like you, who will avoid reality no matter what to avoid party responsibilty, make me sick. Hell, I'm not even blaming the Donkeys. I'm blaming Shelly Silver, the Man. He is the thug who has done more damage to our kids, our state, and our system than either of the two parties. Admit it.

There will be no budget until King Sheldon believes there is something in it for him. I'm not sure who has enough money to pay him off, this year.

State government employees should not forget that they are public servants, but somehow in this budget mess I get the feeling that these same folks feel that government jobs are a right, not a priveledge. If these employees do feel that they are under-paid, under-benefits,under-retirement comp.,then take a real job in the private sector.

G. Jeffrey Haber, Exec. Director of the NYS Assoc. of Towns, makes Danny Donohue look like Twiggy. Seriously. Google him.

There are 932 separate Towns in NYS. Not to mention all of the Villages, Fire Districts, etc. on top of that.

All cattle feeding at the public trough, and all will fight even harder than the unions are fighting to not give up their public feedbag.

While your state employees have seen 0's, 0's, 1.5% raises, 2% raises, and substantial cuts in benefits. School teachers have seen 4-6% raises every year and no increase in copays for health insurance. They also get unnecessary retirement packages that are offered to no one else. The state workers who are being furloughed won't see another raise for years.I don't blame them for wanting to hang on to what little they have been able to get.

Danny Francis the old college try. Hey Dan, don't you wish you were on the legislature where you could show them what's what? Mark my words....the prophet speaks.......

11:19. Well at least I know what leadership is. Part of it means standing up and shouting every single day and not "just going along to get along." That's the real problem.

On top of that is the pandering back home as incumbents say, "Look at the job I have tried to do, give me more time and I'll finish the job."

I say finish those in Albany and get a fresh, clean slate.

8:49 PM, that is 932 town supervisors, highway superintendents and town clerks; 932 to 1864 justices; and 3,728 town councilmen - not to mention countless assessors, zoning board members, planning board members, ZBA members, and on and on and on.

Some of the 932 towns go back as far as the 17th century. Having a center of government every fifteen miles or so made perfect sense in the horse and buggy days. It is a long out-dated mode of governance that we can no longer afford but the ones in power will fight, as you said, harder than the unions to give it up!
