Imagine you are a Yonkers police officer with a base pay of $74,000 a year....Good job and a twenty year retirement...How about retiring at age 44....and getting a pension of $101,333 a year ?
How is that done ?.....Overtime...lots of it ladled on you, including a scheme where officers work side jobs as flagmen for Consolidated Edison...ConEd paid the city for their services and the city paid the officers....Except now that private job adds to the public employee pension because all of that money is counted by the State Retirement System.
This NY Times article tells it all...The shocking stories of a system so out of control it may never right itself.

Thanks for that post and reference.
It is despictable that someone with an annual salary of any amount, sees it double in retirement... how can that be?
Starting at 20 years the annual salary at retirement should be about 35% of the "active salary" - then it could go up say one or two percent every year until say how about no more than 75% = how's that sound?
What, the military and most Feds are that way? Um ... interesting concept isn't it?
The way that stuff is defended, Dan, is if you go after it, you are attacking hard working police officers who have protected us and our children from harm's way. NY's finest. It isn't fair, and it isn't right. But it's the same thing we hear from our teachers. Lies and doublespeak about how they sacrifice for us and the children. We cannot make reasonable arguments about this kind of abuse without hearing this kind of horseshit. And certainly noone I know wants to lead the way in publicly making the point. So, it goes on and on. But you're right Dan, it's wrong. And it is indefensible.
"If we only could get a grant for a police boat, K9 dogs a urban defense vehicle etc etc........."
Hell, we've got tanks at Ft Drum, that oughta cover uban defense.
Remember that Urban Assault Vehicle they had on the movie STRIPES? Now that was cool. Something like that Burnsie could keep down at Wescot's during the summer, and parked up on lower State Street in the winter. The riff raff would think it was an old, retired schoolteacher. Then bam, hit 'em with the missles. Remember those two babes that were in that movie?
Yeah, great movie, But seriously do we need a SWAT TEAM in the county??? The City has one I wonder why there such a need.
