Unclaimed Funds Could Benefit City

Helping lower taxes is not just a once in a time endeavor....Today I spotted (with a tip) a legal notice in the New York Post saying the City of Watertown is entitled to unclaimed funds from the Progressive Insurance Companies.
We are researching what it means.....But I hate to leave a stone unturned !
PS- The City Manager also discovered another unclaimed stash from Weston Foods and has submitted a request for funds to the Comptroller in Albany.

Speaking of "unclaimed/unspent funds?" From Rep. Owens homepage:

* In March, Owens announced that he had returned over 15 percent of his 2009 Congressional office budget to the United States Treasury to help pay down the federal deficit.

What a joke - returned money? Like he had $100.00 just lying in his office and sent 15.00 back?

It doesn't work that way folks ... enough of the gimmicks.

Don't spend it - that saves money in the long run ... but returning it ... no way ... does not happen that way.

He can budget for less; perhaps. If that's what he means, then say so. Not some gimmickery press release.

What it means is that the State Comptroller's office, ably run by NYS Comptroller Tom DiNapoli, is charged with running the unclaimed funds program for the state. There are literally billions of $$ waiting for NYS residents, organizations and municipalities to claim. Could be returned checks, dormant bank accounts, old utility deposits etc. etc. I bet almost every local government has something if they bothered to look and claim it. The money stays there forever. There is no charge for claiming or processing.
Simply go to www.osc.state.ny.us and then click on the Unclaimed Funds icon and follow the instructions. Try it. Look up your friends, neighbors, even dead relatives. Good Luck.
