Republicans are running a retired federal police officer and City of Watertown resident as their candidate for Jefferson County Sheriff
Charles Ruggiero, Jr. will oppose Sheriff John Burns.
The announcement has not been made, but Mr. Ruggiero's name was included in a list of candidates to appear at a May 19 fundraiser for the GOP County Committee. Pays to read the mail some days.

Ruggiero is very sharp and a great team builder. Look forward to hearing from him.
federal huh. being associated with the criminal federal government, in my opinion, is not good. I wonder if he is originally from the north country? Also, he is retired, he should enjoy his retirement. How about someone with no experience instead?
12:40 That really makes me feel safe?!
I know Chuck, and he's not just some retired cop. He was a police chief with more employees than Burns has. He also does a lot in the community. What does Burns do in his spare time...Fort Pearl?
Sheriff Burns and his spare time is of no concern to anyone but him. He has had an outstanding law enforcement career. The thing that you should be asking is why does this other gentleman still want to work.. He is a retired federal police officer huh. Pension and all. Police chief huh. Pension and all huh.. Now he wants county pension huh.. I dont know him at all nor do I want to. I will vote for Sheriff Burns as long as he keeps the good work up.. Again.. GOP is desperate in teh North Country isnt it..
I know Chuck, and he is an honest person, which is rare in these days. He`s very community-oriented, and he and his wife are members of the Smithville Fire Dept., and help them out a lot, besides both being in many community organizations. He is very qualified for the job, and would do a great job. Read his qualifications.
Let's go Burns!!!!!
2:43 Well I am sure Sheriff Burns would love to debate him so that questions can be asked and we can all hear for ourselves from the candidate. Maybe the Mayor could MC the event.
2:43 You can't run for political office and hold a job like he did.
People shouldn't be so quick to judge Chuck. He is honest, hardworking and has done great things as a Police Chief. We need him.
Anonymous sounds and reads like a typical Don't know nothing that has nothing better than to kepp spewing the same kind of rhetoric that is rampant in the North CVountry. Before opening your mouth take time to research the issue.
Chuck is a personal friend and VERY honest. We are also personal friends of John's. No matter who wins, you will be in good hands!!
Sounds like friends of Sheriff Burns are a little nervous. Condemning Mr. Ruggiero because he is retired, ex-federal employee, and the ignorance of anom 2:43 just don’t like him sounds like discrimination to me.
Then again maybe the Northern Dems are picking up the habits of the City Dems. Hopefully, Senator Parker does not bring his people, lol. It is politics and if he decides to run, we have an election.
I do not personally know Mr. Ruggiero but his reputation precedes him. Not to say Mr. Burns has not done an outstanding job for us. This election should be based on Sherriff Burns’ accomplishments not by belittling his opponent.
It is amazing how many, not all, but how many blast retired military and/or Federal employees around this area.
One Q: Where would we have been without them?
Psst, your bias is showing big time.
Chuck is a great guy. He is a great Police officer, and a great guy all around. He has always been that kinda guy that would give you the shirt off his own back. Chuck has great team leading and team building skills. I have never had to deal with sheriff Burns, but he appears to be very stand offish. Chuck has great people skills and the know how to lead this county in the direction that is has been needing for a long time.
Heh Polly.. This is 243. I can tell you are GOP by the way you read things then change them. I didnt say I didnt like him anywhere.... I do not know him nor do I want to... Plain and simple..Nothing discriminatory there is there.
Hey 2:43- Burns has 30 years into a job that you can retire from after 25. Why does HE want to keep working, HUH?
Idiot
2:43 Yous didn't do your candidate any good by acting stupid. And knowing Mr Burns, I don't he would appreciate your help.
Dannie, don't take everything so personally. Again, no one was thinking about you. I have never talked to anyone who has a problem with retired federal employees. Sheeeesh.

What some may not know about Mr. Ruggiero besides the fact that he is still working in local law enforcement is what a great chief he was to work for. He was very fair with the rank and file and believed that the ones who performed their jobs well were the ones to get promoted and not because of who they were or who they knew. He also didn't hesitate to fire those who were inept, unethical, etc. He was well respected and many looked up to him. Many people don't know that he also has over 25 years of military service, having spent time in Vietnam. That combat service helped because he was able to teach that to us when he was in charge of training. He wanted us to be the best we could be. I know he is active with his fire dept and never hesitates to answer calls no matter what time of day or night. He is a selfless individual who has been active in the community and has lived here for over 25 years (makes him a native in my book and his wife was born and raised in Watertown and is a business owner in her own right) What people need to keep in mind is to vote for the person (regardless of party affiliation) who you think will be the most qualified, experienced, ethical and team player with all of the local law enforcement agencies. It may surprise people but I am a democrat but I am going with the person who I think will do an excellent and outstanding job for our community and that is Chief Ruggiero.
Ya its time for new leadership all the way around. He can take his buddie Darrell fishing.John and his deputies care about nothing but there wallets they go around busting people for doing the same things they do drinking and driving it is a major problem with the people he has working for him.Along with respect for the courts and the local judges.Exept of course the county judge and he is a part of the click. Its who you ya know around this area and whos ass you are kissing other wise they will make things up and put you into investigations you have nothing to do with to make an arrest....
726 Smart man.. Keeps idiots like you in line dosnt he.. I work for the Doheny campaign but would never vote for this man.
Hey Now..........
Who would be chuck's undersheriff??
I think I'll stay away from this thread..........
These posts mean nothing. A good debate or several around the county can settle this. Let the candidates speak for themselves. Peel away all the props and let them just talk it out. Look forward to the candidates announcing the debate schedule.
A good debate will hurt nothing. Lets keep it focused on whats important law enforcement and law enforcement management. I see some major cuts coming here and in adjoining counties in law enforcment. Can we afford them. Will the state help out.. I have a question for anyone.. Is the Sheriffs Civil Dept mandated by law? Do you know the law.. I no the jail is mandated and the road patrol is not..It seems to me that Sheriffs Civil people are high paid process servers at best. Couldnt the road patrol serve papers?
Gomer 9:13 ... the reason you haven't heard that sort of nonsense talk about retired Federal employees or military folks is that you stay under a rock in the shadows and that keeps your brain compressed...
Hey, these kinds of posts can be fun if well aimed at Anonymous posters who hide under rocks and don't have the guts to come out in the sunlight and debate from a principled position.
That's what I do Dannie, I stay under rocks and keep my brain compressed. Really good.
Danford. I have never heard any person say anything at any time about how they resented retired federal employees being in our community. I realize being a party line Donkey makes you sensitive to victimhood, but this has been my experience. No one hates you for being a retired federal worker. If it serves your needs to be viewed as a poor federal retiree who is viewed negatively by your fellow citizens, fine. But methinks it, like most of your political tenets, are based on stuff I just don't understand.

Anon. 1:27 - You not understanding is not an unexpected confession on your part, you poor pathetic fool.
BTW: Gen. Puller would never post some crap like that.
FYI: He died on my birthdate in 1971 and ironically his son was blown to pieces on my birthdate in 1968, shortly before my 2nd tour in the same unit in VN.
I have to laught at what one person said about how "all they care about is their wallets" That is very funny indeed. Have you seen a deputies paycheck. Quite pathetic if you ask me. These guys must work in that field because they life the job, not for the public assistance check they get in exchange for their duties.
please vote no to for another term of BURNS/SIMAO for sheriff
Dannie, calm down. Its the weekend.
Try to read something, eat a light dinner, talk with someone who likes you.
When someone can pull your chain this easily, the problem lies with you.
Most Marines aren't victims, Lad.

I always wondered why we had a dectective division in the Sheriff's Dept. It is true they are mandated to provide a lockup, and a civil office, I often hear we need more room at the jail, well cut back on the other parts of the budget.
10:36 - I don't know if you're the same Anonymous a-hole or not, but do me a huge favor and "Take a long walk off a short pier." (Jack Webb in The DI)...
Remember back a few years ago, when you had a reputation? Now you're reduced to throwing profane jibes at people on the internet you don't even know. And all I said was no one I know has a problem with federal retirees. Now Dannie, does ya seriously think the problem is me?
General Puller
This is so pathetic. Why must a political blog be so polarized? It's as if people can't be civil any more. I met Chief Ruggiero the other day, and he gave me one of his brochures. His experience and education alone will knock Sheriff Burns out of the batter's box. I was impressed that Ruggiero actually gives out his cell phone number and invites people to call him and ask questions. I've been voting for almost 30 years and I never saw any politician do that before. I'm satisfied he's the real deal. He gets my vote.
Deputy gets DWAI, and keeps job......how about all the other drunks.................lol (it's election year sheriff)
