Doheny Works the Small Rooms Tucked Away in the Expansive 23rd

Congressional candidate Matt Doheny continues a break-neck travel schedule as he tries to outpace rivals Doug Hoffman and Rep. Bill Owens.
Saturday night, after three days of announcing across eleven counties, he attended a dinner at the Elks Club in Watertown before heading to West Carthage to chat up customers at the Wicked Wench Tavern.
The "Wench" is owned by local Independence Party activist Tammy Bramhall and Doheny wants the IP line. While that decision rests with the party's state chair, local activists have an impact on that process as well as on how people actually vote.
Doheny, at age 39, is better able to maintain the pace needed to compete in this massive district.
When you see his energy and enthusiasm, it's easy to imagine him winning the GOP primary and perhaps the general election in November. Campaigns are about a lot of things, but hard work is high on the list of factors.
I watched him chat up middle age customers at the Wench and his recent spate of publicity in the MSM has increased awareness of who he is.
Doheny predicts he will have the support of all eleven county chairs, as well as many independent activists in the tea party movement.
He is the establishment candidate in a way but as a fresh face with authentic conservative views, he differs from the run of the mill GOP candidate of recent years.

I see he's ditching the suit and tie and going with some more casual shirts. That's a smart move on his part. A stiff politician doesn't resonate well in a rural district.

Geesh I'll have to let John Mchugh know He was doing it all wrong all those years.

Dan Dan Dan don't you have anything new to say other than the same old same old? These times are a changing. People post anonymous because people like you smear them every chance you get with lies.

Anonymous said...

Hey Dan- you are possessed with $$ envy, aren't you. Why don't you get a private sector job and show us how easy it is, since you think that success is not enviable?

You have never had a non-government job, and you turn your nose up at the very people who feed the beast that you worked for.

If you spent half the effort doing something productive, maybe you would start to understand the forces that actually fuel our economy.

It's great to see a candidate out talking to real people and not just party officials or resting on a party leader from down state. Good for him!

Non-Anonymous 2:57, I'd love to see campaign finance reform too.

However, no politician in office is going to forsake the outside contributions that they need to get re-elected or vote for campaign finance reform that would jeopardize their re-election.

So, it would require electing and re-electing independent candidates without outside contributions, right? In that case, the people within those candidates' districts would have to raise enough to compete with the outside interests of the opposition. Is that possible? If so, how?

Anonymous said...

Let's face it folks. Complain about outside money all you want, but face the facts. Congressional races, like it or not, are now $1 million campaigns. If a candidate can raise that money locally, good for him! But, in reality, that just ain't gonna' happen. Right, danny? You could't raise ten cents. Ever. The outside money to question is Political Action Committee (PAC) money---that comes from sources with legislative agendas. If Donehy has friends who have made money, good for him and them! If they want to support him, good for him and them...and us! That lessens a reliance on PACs. Hoffman will be well financed by the right wingnut ideological, conspiracy-toting PACs who are preparing for the downfall of civilization with their underground bunkers, water and soda crackers. What will it be folks?

Not all high money politicians come out on top; Much like high stakes gamblers, who do not always win.To be a winner, you have to believe you are a winner, and develop a positive winners' attitude. From what I have read of Mr. Doheny, he sounds like a winner and will work hard to be a congressman ,and it looks like he has a very good game plan to accomplish his goal. He appears unlike the State Republicans, who are willing to settle for second best in the Govs. race, because they feel they can't beat Andy Cuomo. But,the late Ted Kennedy's seat wasn't supposed to be lost, either

Use your heads Doheny uses the product he got so rich on. Thats why his energy level is up so high.. Think Think Think

Doheny brings something to the table that has been sorely lacking in north country politics---class. He's not a politician---he has energy and is in it for the right reasons. Wow! What a concept. Gone are the days of the good old boys and the same old same old. How refreshing is that! Maybe his involvement will spark the interest of the "now" generation.

9:05om - what are you talking about? I do hope you are not implying that Matt is doing and dealing drugs! Give me a break!

1029 Do the math

Anonymous said...

7:36am - you mean the math that says tells me that the man was hyper successful and wants to give back to the distriuct he has always called home. The math that says that he always wanted to enter politics and thus has extraordinary enthusiasm and energy while campaigning? Is that the math you mean? Matt is one of the most anti-drug guys I have ever met. This is pathetic. I would guarantee that Matt would happily submit to daily drug tests for the rest of his life to prove you wrong. Get a life.

I guess making up this kind of nonsense shows that Hoffman's followers must really see him as a threat. They should. Doheny can run circles around him.

Anonymous said...

Heh 745.. What do you mean anti drug guy? Your gaurantee is accepted. Go daily to the Sheriffs Dept and get tested especially on wkends. As far as Hyper successfull , AT what??? Your canidate is the one that wants disclosure on a canidates finacial records.. Do it? I have a life, a very good one. The only problems I have ever encountered in life have been from people who get elected to public office with false promices and alot of money to buy a chance at that office.IN most cases they are empty hollow people who only want to better themselves.. Money goes a long way to buy power which I feel this man wants. Dont give us that crap about wants to give back to the district..

Oh yes, you can just feel the hatred from 11:16. That attack is what some psychiatrists might call an ego-defense mechanism in action. Assuming that someone had to lie cheat and steal to be successful. Assuming someone who wants to do something good must have a selfish ulterior motive (I believe you called them "empty hollow people"). You seem a bit bitter. Is it just jealousy or are you always this angry at the world?

Thanks for letting us know you "have a life, a very good one" though. That was helpful (and not a bit defensive).

12:50 - no need to psycho analyze the 11:16am poster. He's just a little wound up is all. He'll be fine after he kicks a few puppies.

Check out the Newzjunky link to an Albany newspaper piece in which Owens says he discussed the Obamacare bill with Gov. Patterson in an effort to analyze its NNY impact. OMG. That tells us a lot about Owens and his approach to representation. Can you imagine him linking himself with Patterson? Unbelieveable. Incredible. With all due respect to both offices, and no pun or offense intended but "the blind leading the blind" seems to fit in here!

For all you "nail Dan Francis" for his views on money and its corrupting effect, please visit here and do the research yourself.

Dohney's Money

Click on first map (NY), wait, then click on NY on next map, wait, then cursor over district to see the names, then click on Dohney and go to his "indiviual" donors list...

Note: Sort by state and/or zipcode. You will be amazed, or maybe not.

Either way, the Q is: Oh, crap, you figure it out.

Anonymous said...

Dan-- please share with us just exactly how one finances a $million campaign without contributions from beyond the cong district borders. In all your campaigns for various offices, what is the total you raised? And, in presenting your plan for NY 23 fundraising, pleeeeeze, public financing is not the answer. Base your response on he realities of 2010.

Anonymous said...

the reality is that you cannot raise 7 figures in ny23. that kind of money is just not around us. hence, you've got to "expand the customer base" as the saying goes and generate donations from outside the district.

Anonymous said...

What. Somebody was slappin' Dannie and I got left out? I didn't even see this thread.

Look folks. Dan has to do this. He has to attack Doheny. That Owens guy just helped Pelosi and the Great One give away a zillion dollars that we don't have. Thirty million people who contribute nothing now have more free stuff. Nothing in this world or the next means more to Dannie than free stuff, paid for or dreamed about. Ergo, anyone who might run against the guy who just gave away a mountain of free stuff is an enemy to Dan. Not to mention the Donkey/Elephant aspect. All this crap about money coming from outside the district is just bs. You can read it and debate it if you want. But it means nothing. Keep your eye on the ball. In Dannie's case, that be free stuff. Owens gave it up, now Dannie loves him.

Dan is not as complicated a man as he seems to be.

Anonymous said...

Or smart. How many times has he run? For what offices? Ever come close? Ever held a private sector job? let's keep him in perspective. Even the MSM limits publishing his nonsense to once a month. Thankfully.

This area has more rich people than most places in the state some of the wealthiest people in the country live here they just keep it on the low down so they dont have to spend it...

Dan Francis said...

You all hammer me about my stance on big outside money and then you have the unmitigated gall to blame everything (on me) rather
than on the legalized system we call "campaign financing" as the real source of the legalized corruption we call Congress??

So, as long as all the outside money funds your Rep./Senator rather than you having to then that's okay?

I see, I see.

Answer the questions Dannnnnnny. You want to be taken seriously, don't you?

Anonymous said...

Dan doesn't get it. He equates a Congressional race with a race for the local school board. Dan, here is a lesson for you in politics: Congressional races are national races because the outcome effects the balance of power in the House. Outside money will always come in to a congressional race.

Besides, Doheny was never even in the actual election last year (or even a primary) so he never put on a local campaign with TV ads, radio announcements, etc. Of course he didn't have big money from local donors. Just think a little Dan before you post all your hateful crap. I know it's hard, but some where there there must be a brain that can trump all the hate.

Dan Francis said...

8:53 and those like you: I'm sick of your Anonymous BS insults ... so piss off. And, be sure and tell Graham to kick me off the forum, too on your way out the door.

The only "hate" here is obviously from Anonymous posters like you.

You are small, petty, pathetic and despictable.

Money will always be the root of all that we deem evil, until it is spent in a positive way, that may prove to be beneficial to the people. All money can be good or it may be bad, but it comes down to the type of candidate that the money is being spent on. If a candidate is sincere, honest and puts the people above all else; then money well spent. But, if a candidate turns out be self-centered,egotistical,looks out for themselves, then it's bad money.End result of each scenario, much like a coin flip. The point I want to make is, unless you have the money to spend, you will never know how the coin-flip went.

Dannie, do you ever calm down and relax? This isn't complicated. You love government. Government pays your bills. Most of us can't afford any more government. Thusly, we don't trust it or love it like you do. That, and most everybody else isn't wedded to a political party like you are.

Other than that there isn't much going on, except temper tantrums and profanity on your part.

Calm down, brother. There are no threats to your checks on the horizon. Your bucks will continue to flow.
