Its always great to get a prediction right...especially when I have missed a few prognostications over the years....
The WDT reports Assemblyman Will Barclay will not seek the GOP nod in NY 23.....He will seek another term in the Assembly instead......That means his play for Congress, if it occurs, will come after redistricting in a race againse Rep. Dan Maffei of Syracuse.
Barclay's prospects in NY23 were not good with the race shaping up as a doozie between Doug Hoffman and Matt Doheny. All for the chance to take on Rep. Bill Owens in the fall.
As for Mr. Owens, he is not taking anything for granted. Today he was in the St. Patrick's Parade in Watertown. He worked the crowd like an old style pol and will be a tough opponent in the fall......
However, Hoffman and Doheny are both contenders in their own ways. For those who enjoy the game, a good year ahead.

Well, I have to say that I'm a bit sad over this as I thought Barclay was the best candidate. Now, we'll see what Doheny can do against the Conservative darling Hoffman...that will be an ugly race.
The choice now is crystal clear----Doheny.
Um... Doheney and big outside money and few ideas (yet) vs. Hoffman and big outside money and no idea (before or now).
What a deal.
Owens wins, easily.
Good God, I agree with Danny Francis. Come on Will, I can't agree with Danny Francis...
Too bad Barclay isn't going to do it, but this district will be torn to pieces in a year anyway. That's probably what Barclay understood...he's better off keeping his powder dry and keeping up the fight against Albany's destructive downstate Democrats. Hope he has a hand in the election anyway...we'll need his common sense at times.
Doheny is a nice guy by all standards however is he mean enough to get through the campaign.I dont know about experience but having ideas does go a long way. I hope he can share those ideas with us in the next few months. I feel Hoffman is too powerful a canidate and can be very nasty when going gets rough.
Anyone who thinks that Hoffman is the brains behind his own campaign does not follow this candidate closely enough. Every statement he (his campaign) puts out is straight out of the national conservative playbook. I'm sorry, but I want a person who is willing to speak for themselves...his WDT interview with Jude Seymour was telling and pathetic. God, who the hell thinks he's got what it takes.
Doheny isn't perfect either, but I think he's going to offer a great alternative. Gonna be tough for either to beat Owens.
Is this all we got???
Will should run for Senate...he has established better, solid north country creds. with his stance on wind issues---the only one to do this.
Patti Richie can't defeat Darrell, plain and simple
Barclay for Senate...hmmm...that's interesting. Perhaps...perhaps.
I think Barclay realized was too much of a rino to defeat Hoffman.
Dont forget Nelson of Oberg. He potentially is going to enter at some point. Question is what level
RINO...950, that's called kicking a dead horse. Barclay was certainly qualified for this position and I for one am sad to see him go. He'll be back, that I have no question about.
Doheny, Hoffman...not sure either can beat Owens.
Dan,I'm so glad your the one betting, you know why?you are wrong about 95% of the time,ya I thought I would mention your last blog you wrote on Political Rapids,It was a copy cat of what I said two years ago, about war and Smedley Butler. You should write your own version of war and what it brings to the people not copy what some else writes and make it sound like its your own thesis.Would be willing to read your new version.
You imply I stole something you wrote about Smedley Butler - surely you jest.
You then go on to say I should write about my own version of war and not copy other people's. Surely you jest again.
You don't know me - stop acting like you do.
BTW: Online and free is my book in my own words about war that I know first hand, up close and personal. I assume you can read. So, if you have the time, dig in.
Dan Francis' Book
Dan, the funny thing about you is you have a tendency to try to sound educated and cool but you just end up sounding bitter and foolish. I really wish you would start your own blog rather than flooding the others with naive the same commentary again and again (how many times can you comment on outside money...Dan, FYI - this is a federal election...of course there will be outside money! You sound so dumb when you appear outraged. This just is not a local election. I am not sure if or when you will ever understand that)
Nelson had a hard time winning in The Burg (5 votes) and has done little to distinguish himself and is actually presiding over the decline of Ogdensburg -- not exactly the stuff of legend !!
He has zero credibility with most thinking people.. Last time around many opinion leaders in town abandoned both parties in favor of a 3 rd party candidate . Moreover Nelson also has limited recognition outside the Burg.
Owens will probably win now that Barclay has pulled out. Doheny appears to be just another Rich guy with few ideas and Hoffman is a vacuuous - ever try listening to him ?? -- Painful
Nelson was a potential canidate until his last meeting. Word around Oberg is to get rid of Nelson Vaugh and Powers. No one can figure out their voting against giving a small amount of money for promoting the four lane hwy. All of them are Spending way too much time grandstanding for OCF. They are critical of taxes and when cutbacks are announced they go bullistic because they are the target. The decision has been made about the Prison and no one will change it.. Most people believe it will remain open until the end of 2011 and then phase out. They and their other small minded leaders want to take the credit for keeping it open on or about election time and that is the big concern. Also its about time the teachers in Oberg got brought back into reality.
I dont know what the teachers have to do with this but I agree Nelson is not a credible canidate. He lacks credibility in his home town thus he wont have it in the County thus none in the district. I cant figure the stance the three officials took on the four lane hwy but it sure didnt help them in SLC. This kid Vaugh keeps trying to tie himself to Doheny and I,m not sure this is reality of is he popular with Doheny people. His popularity is nill in the Burg. Russell is weak and a good canidate could beat her but not this guy. Bottom line is we need canidates that have leadership qualities and Nelson and Vaugh dont have them.
Under their so called leadership Ogdensburg is rapidly declining , Taxes are up . services are cut back , infrastructure is decaying, busineses are either closed or in decline , neighborhood s are deteriorating , drug realted crime is up and all these guys are doing nothing to ameliorate anything they grip , grin and grandstand but have achieved absolutely nothing to show for it . Ogdensburg needs INTELLIGENT and BOLD leadership not this 3 ring circus
