With New York lawmakers considering medical marijuana, California voters this fall will vote on a referendum to make the weed totally legal.
That would put the Golden State on the way to Cheech and Chong Nation and raises the issue of whether the expensive and intrusive War on Drugs is really worth it.
Despite generations of War, the results are dubious and a large swath of the population just doesn't see anything intrinsicly wrong with marijuana.
New York may be on that path with medical pot.
Polls are now split and the biggest proponents of continued prosecution of marijuana cases are those with an interest in the War....That would be government, police, prosecutors, prisons, counselors and lawyers.

Im a little old fashioned. I believe in following the law. Marj is illegal now. If its legalized then I,ll make my choices. The war on drugs never went anywhere. Sheriffs, state police, and local police have used this claim for years to get funded for other things. In St Lawrence County there was an old hemp factory that made rope years ago near Lisbon. In order to reach a quota they used to arrest curious kids that tried to pick some of the wild hemp that grew there. About every three years a major raid would take place with TV cameras in place with mega police on film army vehicles etc staged . This was a staged event to get more funding from legislators. Drug task force members would tell the press it was worth umpteen thousands of dollars and that would be printed... All lies in a failed effort. If your for using it promote it through your legislators. If not dont worry you dont have to use it... Medically if it can help anyone great the law is probably long overdue. Police have used this for an excuse to violate peoples rights for years it time it stopped. That also is illegal and arnt they supposed to enforce the law. The other part of this puzzel is the fact that there is so many reformed smokers out there. They wont let anyone smoke in their homes, cars property etc. But in secret they like to puff on the weed..Hospitals print mega advertising against smoking and refuse to allow smoking near their properties. Of course that different.. Isnt hipocracy great
why doesn't the mayor condemn the terrorist acts theat are being perpetrated on certain Dems to scare them into not supporting the health care package? If broken windows, death threats, cut gas lines, and coffins aren't acts of terrorism, what are they?
If medical marijuana helps the pain then prescribe it in a non-smoking format. Smoking is bad for your health and smoking drugs is a lot worse. I fear that too many people will vote for it just to smoke dope. Or should all recreational drugs be free so the pot heads will all overdose and die so we can get on with a better life.
3:58 give me a break! Most of these are staged or just outright lies as AP has reported the coffin issue was. Yes I said MOST as I'll admit there are crazies on all sides. Movies and books on how to kill Bush were nothing right? You libs need to look in the mirror. By the way was it not Obama's current cronies who were bombing America in the 60's?
Merinol is the synthetic version in capsule/tablet form but for some patients the inhalant form is more effective. The Medical Society supports the legalization of medical marijuana.
Q: Does smoking a few joints impair one's ability to think, drive a car, fly a plane, sail a ship, or operate machines safely or not?
I don't know that answer, but if one joint does, or two do, or three, or whatever number does, then if it's legalized, it would need to have the same controls as DUI/DWI, etc. applied, I'd think.
We shall see.
The federal government still considers the use of marijuana illegal but they continue to look the other way when used for medical purposes. State law does not supersede federal law; therefore California has a long ways to go before they legalize pot.
Laws do exist if one is caught driving under the influence of drugs. Legalization of pot would just increase the socialization of pot smokers, like a smoker’s din, which would lead to more driving while impaired. The same when alcohol was legalized; alcoholism became an illness not a crime. We have national healthcare now so who cares, but guess who will be paying for that illness.
I do not get it!
The federal government has placed a moratorium on prosecuting the clinics/pharmacists/doctors who prescribe marijuana if the state has legalized it.
And 4:06, your post made me laugh a lot, thank you. First, when doctors prescribe marijuana for medicinal purposes they urge patients to use vaporizers which are not harmful to the human body in any way. Also, no one in the history of the planet has ever died or overdosed from the use of marijuana. I am shocked at anyone who argues against the legalization yet supports the legalization of alcohol. Alcohol causes hundreds of thousands of deaths a year, impairs your ability, and is harmful to the human body if consumed in large amounts.
I am not in any way arguing the legalization of alcohol, just making a comparison.
And Poly Information, marijuana is not habit forming as alcohol is. The "illness" from alcohol you speak of is called alcoholism, or the physical and mental addition to alcohol. Marijuana is in no way addictive, and if NOT smoked, and used responsibly (not driving while impaired) then there are absolutely no negative side effects to the human body, yet numerous positive effects.
I dont buy that non addictive crap. Who says? In the opinon of some) No matter legal or not it will get abused and we will have to learn to deal with it. Dealing with it will cost money and guess where the money comes from. I guess legalization is a reality as it could generate a great deal of revenues and that is what politicans want. That way they dont have to make tough choices like cutting spending.
The money will come from taxing the crap out of it and issuing tickets to those abusing it, exactly like they do with cigarettes and alcohol, both have been proven to be more destructive than marijuana.
Maybe if we stopped prosecuting so many people for petty marijuana charges we could focus more on the drugs that we should be focusing on, like cocaine, meth, heroine, ect...
952.. They cant do that they are not smart enough. All they arrest is users and petty dealers. The big boys walk away everywhere. The war on drugs is a joke.. This is what upset law enforcement the most on the revision of the Rockerfeller laws.. They lost their prime source for information and that is informants . They lost a great deal of leverage with the common user. They now have to think and some of them are not capable. Whats really scary is how many times have you had someone break into your house and get away with it. How many time have you been the victim of other crimes and they never have been caught. How many times have you been the victim of a sexual crime and the perpetrator never brought to justice. They you find out later the cops caught them but they used them instead for a bust on a minor drug charge that gets them publicity. It happens alot it happens all the time and its wrong. Legalize the shit and get it done. We can all make our choices
Amen!
Speaking of the DA what ever happened to the individual that got in the accident that killed 2 people?? It was in Limerick area.
