Capitol Punishment: Members Under Intense Pressure

It's getting intense in the Capitol as the phones ring and the Democratic leadership turns up the heat on weak kneed Dems who are threatening to vote no.
The President is schmoozing some and threatening others....While one report says House Speaker Pelosi had Utica Congressman Michael Arcuri pinned to a wall trying to convince him to change....Syracuse Congressman Maffei folded his cards and other members of the NY delegation are getting the word from Union and party bosses that they had best get in line.
There are so many ways the leadership can squeeze these people, it is a virtual certainty the legislation passes.
Meanwhile in Watertown, opponents of the bill gathered in front of Rep. Bill Owens downtown office to register their complaints.
There is also talk of parliamentary gimmicks being used to "deem" the Senate bill as approved with a vote...Such a move could spark a riot among voters.

The policy debate has been over since the summit two weeks ago. Health care reform is the right policy. This is just pure politics. If there is right and wrong on the politics, the voters will decide in November.

This entire deal shows how our pols have grown more powerful than that the people they work for. As NY23 surely knows, we can vote in Nov, but the damage will already be done. This is all reminding me of school budget votes. It is all out of our control.

Remember how people were ridiculed when they warned of the dangers of a Speaker Nancy Pelosi? You will have a permanently changed nation because of her ego and the Great One's lies.

35% increases in compensation for health insurance board members at a time that the same organization is increasing premiums by 20% and decreasing provider benefits...we need some sort of healthcare reform. The status quo is not susainable

I don't necessarily "deem" it necessary to deem the bill, either, but it's darn hypocritical to paint this as as "first-time" event that's ever happened, so let's kill those nasty, evil DEMS for destroying the Constitution, which BTW: allows both Houses to make their own rules... but now, the proverbial shoe or rule making body are the DEMS and it's driving the GOPers nuts.

The way it outta be... wait until they return to power and then see how fast that wild Elephant goes on another rampage?

9:41 I agree with you. There are problems. But we cannot do this. This bill is wrong for so many reasons, not the least of which is we have no money for it. Do you really believe the likes of Naaancy Pelosi, telling us it will save money? We will lose the healthcare we enjoy and go broke doing it.

Dannie, you really seem to be on top of things. So you're telling us that no matter how dirty the Donkeys are willing to become to pass this bill we should think the GOP will be worse when they get back in power so its ok? That is strange thinking. I believe, General Dan, that you guys have taken bribes, payoffs, special deals (Louisiana, Nebraska, Mass, etc) to new levels. Now you're willing to attempt to change rules on votes. And your only defense is to claim the Elephants are bad too? Not much substance there, Dannie. Advice. Save your ammo until you have something to shoot.
