Senator Darrel Aubertine is among those opposed to the soda tax and is getting help in his reelection bid from the soft drink industry.
Opposition is smart as the tax would have a big effect on small businesses in NNY who can easily mobilize a small army of voters who would matter greatly in a marginal district like the 48th. In this close a race, small unorganized business groups like restaurants or liquor stores can play a pivotal role.

An increase on soda, gas or anything the public likes does not really curtail its use, it just costs more. If you like Pepsi it will simply cost more! Stupid tax.
I'm waiting to hear which part of the budget Aubertine wants to cut to make up for the lost revenue.
Another"courageous" stand by Darrel. He's really no different than Patty Ritchie and neither are you, Mayor. Don't close the parks or the prison, don't charge more for the license plates, don't raise taxes on soda pop or reduce the snowmobile fund- but we will screw education and programs like EPIC- and your heroine Palin talks about "death panels". Every politician in NNY is a self serving panderer.
Hey, if there ever was an area that needs to cut back on its sugar consumption it's Watertown. Look around. More lard asses per square foot than any where else in the state- according to my observation.
another cop out politician wants the easy way out of every problem -- don't cut MY area cut everyone else
Big special interests all buy votes again -- disgusting we are no longer by the people , of the people etc its now by the SIG's , for the SIG's etc
Actually, I never said 'don't close the parks or prisons..."
I think they should be ....
Along with a lot of other aspects of state government.
You're right Mr. Mayor, but when it comes to getting the Grants well that's a horse of a different shade.
right, Mayor you didn't,but you did say"don't tax my soda pop"...
Hey i live in the Burg, we'll gladly trade our mayor for Watertown's
Mayor Graham : I appreciate your blog. It's a good way to hear the peoples' voices on a variety of subjects.Hopefully,( but probably don't admit it), that some of our political "leaders" scan blogs to get the mood of the people. I think it's great to read all the various comments, pro, con, indifferent;no one comment is meaningless. The only useless comments are those that go un-spoken . After-all, political leaders can't read our minds.(Even though some like to think they can).
Keep up with the high rates of sugar consumption along with the high rate of salt use. That's the ticket, but at the same time, everyone had better make sure they have a good health care plan to cover their health care costs - which are going up, up, and away.
A medical fact and serious heath issue -- not a tax issue.
I think Chuck Schumer has read this blog, he is not wearing his glasses on the bottom of his nose anymore. As a matter of fact I dont think he is wearing them. All I did was say something about it and poof Chuck responded...
"another cop out politician wants the easy way out of every problem -- don't cut MY area cut everyone else"
Ummm... isnt that kinda the job of a "representative"? Don't we want him battling to cut elsewhere, isn't that why we elect them? I for one do not want my representative advocating cuts in his own district but not elsewhere.
Not exactly i want OUR government to be efficient , effective , and deliver the maximum amount of service at THE minimum AMT OF COST , TO FORGET PROVINCIALISM , PORK AND SPECIAL INTERESTS AND SERVE THE GREATER GOOD NOT JUST VESTED INTERESTS..
Eliminate waste , duplication , obsolescent or ineffective programs and authorities wherever and whenever they exist
