Assembly Ratifies Saving O-Burg Prison...Big Win for Addie Russell

Maybe it was a set up from the beginning or maybe the North Country reps leaned on their collegues, but both houses of the Legislature are approving budget bills that call for continued funding for the Ogdensburg prison slated for closure.
Both budget versions also nix the soda tax and say no to wine in supermarkets....again issues that were causing the Dems problems in marginal seats upstate. The Assembly version does have more spending, and adopts the borrowing proposal advanced by Speaker Silver's good friends, Lt. Governor Richard Ravitch.

One would expect an apology from Nick VAugh in the next couple of days. Also it would be quite manly of Nelson and Powers to say Thank You Addie. Ms.Russell has been apparently doing her home work. Of course the Ogd. 3 Amigos will try and claim the victory in some way.. Im not convinced that the Prison will remain open very long and neither is anyone with common sense but it gives Ogdensburg a reprieve and a chance to get some officials elected up there that can do the job. The 3 Amigos have to go.

The fact of the matter our dem senator aubertine saved ocf. It was simply politics

I work at OCF. I agree thank Darrel Aubertine!

429 Your probably right. Its politics,But good politics for Ogdensburg. Why would anyone want to replace anyone who is can perform like this ? The bad politics we have to get rid of are in Ogdensburg itself.. Have any of the task force thanked the Senator and Assemblywomen yet.. It should be a headline...
Also Expo is this weekend in Ogdensburg. Their will be a public appearance by Mayor Nelson and Nick vaugh to accept credit fo rthe prison. Darrell will probably come and Nelson has promised to Kiss Darrells ring and if Addie can come Nick will apologize for his twitter campaign against her and kiss Addies a-- Come and see it...

Are you kidding me?!? Darrel was the only representative who refused to say he would vote "no" on a budget that closed the prison.

Addy take credit??? Are you kidding me? The only credit she can take is for NOT preventing the OCF closure before it got out of control. Didn't the voters put her in Albany to prevent this crap from even getting to the burner? Instead, she pleaded with us to write letters. Give me a break.

3:12 , your comments are on OCF are probably correct.Anyone working there now should start making future plans, now. Not being a smart-***, but look ahead to realism.Staying open for now saves some faces, but be wary what goes on in politics.

Its a definite win for the people who are employed at OCF. Its a definite loss for the people of NYS. Closing the place was the right thing to do. The Pols did the right thing for themselves.

Strickly a political shell game to get the dems back in OCF will be history as the economy continues to worsen . Borrowing funds to BALANCE operational costs is the beginning of a death spiral . CO's would be well advised to start making career plans in the short term . This whole scenario is rife with "political shennanigans . Costs and taxes must be cut if NYS is to recover . Our politicians are simply gutless

If crime is down, and there's not enough folks in jail, well do the math, how about a 25% across the board cut in the prison budget?? Let the chips fall where they may, They have second jobs anyway. And the prisons can never be run by a private corp. thanks to Pataki.

542. Nick your remarks are childish. Oh I forgot you are a child... Get a real life will you..

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know if they proposed to close other prisons in order to keep Ogdensburg open? I would like facts and not rhetoric on this one please.

The only fact you need is Addie Russell and Darrell Aubertine stepped up to the plate for Norther New York. No bs here just fact. All the yelling demonstrating and articles in the paper helped but Adie and Darrell did their job. Admit it folks and quit sounding like poor losers and children that lost what they have to complain about. You will find something else.. They both just put miles between themselves and any pretend canidates the GOP can muster. In the meantime Ogdensburg must start with their future. Get rid of the local weak politicans. Disolve the City into a village or into the towns of Lisbon and Oswegatchi would be a great start. Cut their government that would help Thanks Addie and Thanks Darrell

8:28 - You must be from another planet or you are the Democratic Chair of St. Lawrence County. To say Addie and Darrell & Darrell stepped up to the plate is a slap in the face of every hard working, tax-paying person in the north country! Their job, which they didn't do, is to prevent this stuff from happening. They were absolutely sleeping at the wheel - maybe too busy pushing New York State deeper in debt. When a correction officer does his job on a daily basis they don't get these warm pat-myself-on-the-back accolades these local politicians hand out in the form of press releases. Instead, they do their (thankless) job, go home to their families and pay their taxes. They didn't need this curve ball thrown at them by the DEMOCRATIC controlled state!!!! Grow up and get your head out of the sand.

Forget the prison for a minute. What the hell was she doing wearing orange to the Irish Festival. Has she no sense of history?

844. My heads not the one in the sand. Corrections officers at these prisons in Ogdensburg and Northern NY are babysitters. Glorified babysitters. Most often will truthfully tell you they enter a dorm and read or nap for their entire shift. They make dam good money for it to. They dont need any curve balls thrown at them I agree but as a taxpayer paying your salaries I say you are dam lucky because public opinion is really not in your favor. The prison should have gone now not later as it will. I do agree with your statement about the local politicans. The three amigos in Ogdensburg need to go..

Anonymous said...

I agree Mr. Aubertine and Mrs Russell should be thanked by the Correctional people in Ogdensburg. The mayor and councilors should pass a resolution and ask Nick Vaugh to read it thanking them.. I think I,ll ask Mr. Shollette or MOrley to introduce the resolution.

i guess i consider myself a lukewarm aubertine supporter, but i think the people gushing over his (and addie's) apparent saving of the prison might want to take a step back. who knows how much jeopardy the prison was really in? and more importantly, with the democrats holding onto the senate by the slimmest of margins, and with aubertine representing what's expected to be a hotly contested district, the decision to save the prison may have had a lot more to do with the (d) next to his name than any personal heroics.

or maybe not! who can really say?

Anonymous said...

You are right 711. Thats the game they play in Albany . Be it GOP or Dem . The majority plays it best in either case. Statistics prove that this prison should have been shut down but politics has saved it for now. I to am also lukewarm on Darrell and will probably vote for Ritchie in the end. I think Russell is sufficient and will vote for her unless something else is offered by the GOP. But no matter who gets in the game will go on. OCF is dead in the water.Where you pay your taxes and get your services from is up to the political games played every administration. We as a people should be able to change it but have not acomplished this in many years. Money talks. Like this Doheny in Jeff Co. He has much money at his disposal so as inexperienced and clueless as he is he will make an impact on the election when he should nt. MY entire point is lets say thank you for those mostly involved and lets move on. Lets not dwell on how bad every body in Albany is coming from the people in Ogdensburg Now...Ogdensburg must key on moving on hopefully with new elected officials and people with vision and understanding of the world today

844. What planet were you born on. Obviously you live on planet Ogdensburg.. Your elected officials in Ogdensburg have used your woes to posture and be critical of others. Yet you flock to them in your time of need. Correctional jobs are not hard jobs, they dont require you to be a rocket scientist as you would have us believe. You watch over criminals who are incarcerated. You are in fact babysitting. You help them with their needs you see that they are safe and you protect them from each other. You read on the job and sometimes sleep on the job. You work doubles in order to have very long extended vacations. Your uniforms are provided for you and you have paid vacation, health insurance, holiday benefits and you are paid very well for this area. You are considered peace officers so you all get to go to the range and shoot targets yearly . All of the above at our expense the taxpayer. So dont be too suprised that not many people are understanding why as the prison population goes down and is more consolodated in other prisons we feel that we have less need for these facilities. If you think for one minute that the elected officials and appointed people in Ogdensburg task force really care about you your mistaken. They care about your money yourwages my tax dollars keeping the community alive. A community which is dying and decaying around you. You appear not thankful to the Albany politicans that just gave you a repreve for whatever reason. Then thank Nelson, Powers, Vaugh for doing nothing and having nothing else in the city you could revert to in case of a closure. Your one and only hope is that this four lane hwy gets passed and can produce more jobs in the area and possibly attract an industry to locate there. All three local officials I have named have already done what they can to slow this process down.

Darrell and Addie will be at expo this weekend. Anyone attending should politely thank them for their effort with the prison closing. Then take a drive around Ogdensburg and see whats happening.Dont walk its not safe anymore. Draw your own conclusions and we the taxpayers will politely do the thanking in November.

7:49, I have heard from insiders that A bunch of prisons were being looked at to shut down a number of cells, located throughout up-state NY. OCF may have a future problem w/ co-gen plant. How does 10-12 million sound to update the boiler system,(which always requires mods. = more money)?

Poly Information said...

Tell me, why Senator Aulbertine's district with a democratic controlled Senate has a prison closure? That does not make sense to me or does it.

I applaud everyone that participated in trying to keep OCF open. It is about jobs in your backyard and there are few in Ogdensburg.

Maybe, if Senator Aulbertine voted “NO” to legislation to release B Felony and violent felons early, we would not be having this problem.

This is downstate versus upstate; I wonder why every closure is in Northern New York. Every dorm closure is in Northern New York. The problem is Senator Aulbertine wants to do the right thing, in this case save his seat, but he is on the Down State Team and that is not our TEAM!

This is NYS taxpayers vs correction officers that out of reality.Your inmate numbers are down so your numbers should be down. You talk about releasing inmates from prison. All thats happened is that the old Rockefeller laws have been updated. Wake up they are about to legalize what most of them were in there for. Drugs.... If the government was smart they would have privately owned prisons like in the South.. No taxpayers money wasted on babysitters. Oh I forgot Pataki a Republican made that hard to do...

Anonymous said...

Totally agree, privatizing the facility is the way to go .

TAXPAYERS can't afford 75-100 k /yr for a babysitter

Anonymous said...

It ain't going to be privately run, thanks to the CO's union and Pataki. We need more jobs with a 25 yr. retirement. NOT.

Anonymous said...

9:37 Are you talking about schoolteachers?

At least CO's work full time and pay co-pays for their insurance.

Anonymous said...

Hey 11:16 you got it, but it's hard to pay folks the wage you demand in these tough economic times, but teachers don't own construction companies, teachers can't work doubles to get hunting season off, you now have 25 yr. retirement,(thanks Jim) teachers didn't get the FREE jacket and mileage plus $150.00 to show up to Will's political rally, Butttttttttttt you folks are almost like two peas in a pod, Both Greedy.
