For the first time in history, two women serve on the Watertown City Council, after today's inauguration of Teresa Macaluso to serve on the body. She joins Roxanne Burns on the five person panel.
Macaluso and Councilman Jeff Smith took the oath of office in ceremonies today at the Flower Memorial Library. The pair were elected last November.
For Smith, its a continuation of a 17 year career in politics that at age 40 had him musing about the changes in his own demeanor since he was first elected to the County Board of Supervisors in 1993. Smith says he is more polished but is still committed to change. He affirmed support for his two signature issues....alternative energy and a second sheet of ice.
In a brief but heartfelt address, Macaluso thanked family, friends and supporters and pledged to do her best for the people. The coffee shop owner and former nurse was new to politics but easily won the seat vacated last year by Councilman Peter Clough.
Their first meeting of 2010 is Monday night.

Where's the second sheet of ice going?? Rumor has it the town of Watertown.
its never going to happen our beloved mayor does not like to give any money towards economic development! Second sheet of Ice is a great idea one that the city should stand behind! Gotham is in need of a change I hope Macaluso can stir the pot instead of becoming a lame duck to be controlled by the Mayor.
Well, I guess he doesn't like to spend money but who does? Now it will cost more for economic development thanks to the JCIDA and the "pension credit" scam.
Macaluso will do anything and everything the Mayor tells her to. There will be no change or stirring of the pot.
You are right 8:18.
what sort of alternative energy does Smith have in mind?
None, Councilman Smith is just
having an "Al Gore moment."
I like that 8:18
How about Mini-Hydros along the Black River.???????
Wow - 818 - Do you think she will just "rubber stamp" the Mayor? It takes 3 votes to pass anything on the Watertown City Council, anyway. As for this so-called "second sheet of ice," what is that all about? We need some firsts in Watertown - Affordable housing, urban renewal, and oh, I don't know fixing what already appears to be broken in the Watertown City budget from the over-spending done in previous years.
