This is a pretty good analysis of how Doug Hoffman lost an election he could have won. The fact he got hung up on local issues is ironic since his opponent was no better informed, but was seen as more glib and thus never challenged. An extra aside from yours truly....the race was created by the White House who had picked the candidate and devised the strategy before they created the vacancy. They had the sophisticated field canvassing effort in place and would have likely beaten Scozzafava if the Hoffman phenomenon never occured.
The Democrats pivoted to play in a race they never could have anticipated and won the end game simply by showing their guy to be more mainstream and reasonable to the few voters in play the final few days. The big swing came in the western and southern ends of the district where Hoffman should have won big, but didn't.
American Thinker: Who lost NY 23 for the GOP?

The fundamental problem with Hoffman was that he was a third-party candidate, inherently weak. If one of the stronger Republican challengers (for instance, Maroun or Doheny) had sought the Conservative Party nod, then I think that line could have won that election. However, Hoffman and a few in-party operatives were the only ones to show up to seek the nomination.
A whole lot of what happened in NY-23 had very little to do with Hoffman's strength and a lot more to do with the Republicans choosing Scozzafava.
The Democrats did come to play, and they stuck to their plan.
In Jefferson County we have watched the Democrats win three races in a row that utilized Field Canvassing as part of their election tool belt.
Field Canvassing is not new, and has a 30 year History.
What better way to identify, target and qualify unaffiliated voters in a rural area?
This focuses a campaign like a laser beam, and is not a shotgun approach, as is heavily financed negative ads.
The question is:
Why aren't the Republicans utilizing all the campaign tools available to them?
So far, their only claim in the 23rd Congressional Race is that they kept Senator Aubertine out....
The 23rd is much more moderate than the nutjobs think. THAT's why Owens got elected, and THAT's why Dede would have won if the GOP hadn't left her hanging out to dry.
Dede was the canidate for the voters in this area, the chairs had it right this time. Mike Long like most conservatives is a cry baby and is not paying attention to how people are voting.Doug the so called Reagan Republican, hear these words. Members should never work against a Republican canidate, disloyalty means speaking against a republican canidate, putting signs for another canidate on your property, voicing negative opinions against canidate thet could harm the over all goal winning the election. As a committee member you may not always agree with the choices of the majority, but the majority rules. The party expects when the majority has made there ruling you will work with not against.Enough said Mr. mayor why do you blog so much about the GOP when you do not believe in party this should not be that important you have told me your self it is not about party. Dede two wrongs don't make a right so pack light for the next trip to the capital....

Oh, this is the Mayor's blog. For a moment, I though I had accidently come across the Cod Pink site...
