Is "One of Us" Enough ?

Diedre Scozzafava may indeed be a typical Albany politician as the Dems say in their latest TV ad, but there really is not another Albany scandal as implied by the ad.
The attack ad sponsored by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee looks like the type of ad Republicans cobbled together to use against Darrel Aubertine.....Unflattering photos, catchy graphics, sorta true but not illuminating.
The tax break she voted for was the extension of the Empire Zone program for which her brother's business did get consideration. To be fair its a program championed by many local pols and bureaucrats because it provided an out to rescue select businesses from New York's horrific tax code. (This just came to me.....is there an EDZ in Plattsburgh ? And was it used in the alleged creation of those 2,000 jobs....?)
There were lots of abuses of the system engineered by crafty lawyers good at corporate shirt changing. That was not something that involved Scozzafava.
Then there are the 190 tax hikes she supported....Mostly, according to the WDT, just votes for home rule bills that allowed local governments to impose or extend sales and bed taxes.
Legislating creates a record....which is open to interpretation. The other candidates don't have a record, so without exhaustive opposition research, we know little about them.
Now Scozzafava's record is fair game and most of us have a pretty good feel for what she is all about. I also know her as a neighbor...."one of us" if you will.
Is that enough of a reason to vote for someone ?
Only time will tell...if the more numerous voters in the western end of the district go with "one of us" she wins.....If one of our own isn't good enough, she loses.
The election is really all about her.

Thank you for this blog. It is rather freshing, after reading articles from Jude for several days. The One of Us question is at the heart of this election, isn't it? I have known Bill Owens for many years, and have emmence respect for his judgement, and his ability to bring people to consensus. I first saw Dede Scozzafava, when she recently visited our area suggesting a Harley-Davidson manufacturing plant in Plattsburgh. We are not holding our breath, but it seemed a fine gesture to garner votes here.

Hey it works for other politicans, why not Dede, she's certainly not going to tout her record, on Job creation, (at least not when it comes to hardware stores)

Boy howdy...parisanship trumps everything in NNY, huh?

They'll vote for Aubertine just because he...he...he what? What does he do well? Name me one thing that man does well?

Nothing, he isn't a farmer, he isn't a powerful politician (clear evidence in losing all our highway money to his downstate buddies) and he just get's along to go along.

NNY voters will vote for him as an empty suit, but not Dede? Let's use the same mantra we heard from residents up here about Darrel vs Barclay/Renzi...he's "one of us."

Well, isn't Dede? Isn't she in the same mold? What's the difference?

I would argue the difference is striking - she understands what it takes to work across party lines, she is a moderate not politizing every issue and has actually been locally elected.

But, what does the average citizen argue - she's a Republican...ooooooooooohhhhhh...all Republicans are evil and therefore we should vote for this guy no one has ever heard of. "One of us" be damned.

The person who should really be scared by this line of thinking should be Aubertine...has his "One of Us" divisive campaign finally run its course?

Aubertine isn't up for reelection here, so why keep bringing him up? You Repubs keep pounding the same old drum of cliche- DeDe is NOT a fresh face, has a record of moderation aka go along to get along, what has she DONE besides a hundred tax bills?

Correction! Dede is not a moderate, she is a liberal.

Our current gang of "3" hasn't done much for us lately, and will continue down the path until they retire.

Ms Scozzafava is NOT one of us period. She is a typical Albany Pol who once elected sees ONLY vested self interest or special interests. NNY has not been blessed economically by her stint in Albany. Her rhetoric is muted by what has happened with Hacketts and other century firms in NNY

9:17 and any others here today at the trough:

Let's review shall we?

1. Dede: Republican, but not a moderate or conservative; a liberal they say; an Albany insider; a typical pol.

2. Doug Hoffman: Wild-ass Conservative singing the same old, same old stale, rabid conservative song that only Tom DeLay, Limbaugh, or the far, far, far right loves (all 15% of them).

3. Bill Owens: well-connected big time lawyer (who supported D'Amato and Stafford bids for office); big money grabber; creator or acquired jobs in Plattsburgh (we aren't sure which); slick insider; and NOT a bona fide Dem until after the election; and very, very flakey on key issues (public health care option and the two wars).

What a field? Especially for people too afraid to engage them and force them out in the open on tough issues that should matter, to busy to tell them to stop the slick, BS Ads that are either false, empty or downright lowdown and dirty.

I think we may see a very low turn out for this “special election.” ... wouldn't surprise me one bit. The GOP looks like they will lose and are content about that prospect. And, Owens: looks like he .... well, looks like he might win – then what?

My family has know Diedre and her family for years. She is a good person and honestly wants to serve our area well.

Being an independent Conservative, I really want to vote on the Conservative ticket in this election. However, being a mid-term election and with the limited amount of time with no debate and little clear coverage of the candidates, I believe that unfortunately voting for Doug H. will just split the vote.

This will literally guarantee that a real Democrat gets elected. I think it's amazing that the DNC, who controls Albany would use "Albany politics as usual" to attack another candidate. Of course the left seldom realizes it's being hypocritical. The people keep voting for them and they keep making it worse in this State.

We all complain about Albany and then what party do we send back to the majority time and time again?

12:46... yep. It's called political ignorance and sometimes it's driven by fear of change.

I am amazed by the "she's a good person" vote, AJR is a good person also, but seriously both are interested in their own ambitions, here's an idea to protest the license plate increase, let's send all the used plates to the folks who voted for it.

I wonder if Hoffman can see the 23rd District from his house????

Gee Whiz. The Republicans didn't have a problem when they ran Jimmy Tedisco, then Assembly Minority Leader, for Congress in NY 20 even though he didn't live in the district!

And BTW, in case you haven't noticed, NY 23 includes all or part of 11 counties. So no matter who is elected on November 3rd, they will be 3 hours away from some folks houses. How do you think the people from Plattsburgh, Essex County, Hamilton County etc. have felt all these years being represented by John McHugh from way , way over on the western edge of the district.
Stop and think for a minute about what you are saying. And also, when was the last time you actually saw John McHugh in person?
Bill Owens has been doing one heck of a job getting out and about to meet with as many people as possible. He has a presence in at least 5 Democratic Headquarters in the district. Where is Dede? Does she even have a headquarters?
Owens will win this because Dede is not a Republican, she is a RINO. She is not liberal or moderate, she is simply opportunistic and a fraud.
