Council Vacancy Is Opportunity for Right Person

City Council is looking for a collegue for the next five months.
The resignation of Councilman Peter Clough has left a vacancy that will be filled in short order since being down one person on a five person body is difficult.
It's a dead end job that pays $1020 per month.
The Clough seat will be filled in November when voters choose between Steve Bradley and Teresa Macaluso for a 4 year term.
Councilman Jeff Smith has suggested tapping a young person of college age and giving them a learning experience. That's OK with the right young person and I agree it would be an unusual move.
The other alternative is to choose a former elected official as sort of an elder statesman candidate.
Don't look for anyone interested in running for the seat to be picked even though they would have to wait two years before running on their own.
Among the former elected officials are Tom Walker,Ken Hartz, Jim Norris, Joe Butler , former candidate John Rice, or businessman Dave Mance.
Those interested in being considered should contact me at 486-0879.

How about Sarah Palin, I heard she's not busy these days.

Just a question about the deck since I can't comment above. The deck was built with NYS Parks and Rec grant which doesn't not allow for the sale of the property. Part of the grant you agreed to says the property will be forever City owned and open for PUBLIC use. You can not sell park land without an act of the state legislator.

If so, then it cannot be "licensed" for the exclusive commercial use of a private enterprise.........That would be tantamount to the same thing....If its going to end up being used for this purpose, it will be a legal stretch but presumably the state says it built the deck as an inducement to develop the building....so surely NYS is not going to go to court to stop such a use....

How about Matt Doheny?

He is certainly qualified but I would worry it woudl stir a Dem hornet nest as he is a likely challenger to Senator A next year....But if he or anyone is interested they should make themselves known.....

We if they allow you to do it then they better be careful about other communities that would like to allow development on there property.

Jeff, can you define qualified? Are there specific things that you are looking for (past experiences, education, age, etc.)?

I find the idea of serving on City Council an enticing offer and a fitting way for me to give back to the community that has provided for me over the past 28 years of my life. However, I feel my age may prevent me from being seriously considered.

The flip answer is you have to be 18, live in the city and be able to fog a mirror......
I am sure the Council will want conversancy in public policy...knowledge of the community.....an allegiance to the city....and an ability to work with a board.....
